Wonderfull old toybox. Your attention to detail is very cool - an old box from grandfather might just be as important as Wegners 'The Chair', or even more! Your understanding of that is just perfect! Good carpentry never goes out off fashion. Thank you for keeping that alive!
Imagine being that toy box, so masterfully restored and risen from a years-long basement confinement to proudly join the other beautiful furnishings upstairs. It's a Christmas miracle you've enabled.
I love how thoughtful you are about retaining the character of the old finish while simultaneously making the piece useful again. This has inspired me to fix up the old trunk my sister and I used to use as a dress-up box growing up!
I was having an anxiety attack when you painted over the lid “patina” .... then I realized that you put the same experience and knowledge into even this beloved “humble” heirloom as if it were a museum worthy treasure !! Love the colour : ragged on !! Got it ..
Those items with memories, and love for the history of our possessions are some of our most valuable. Love how you brought a little bit of dignity into this precious piece. It honors those who came before.

Wonderful job as usual. I love you treat everything you work on with the same love. Wonderful that this family will continue to cherish this beloved toy box made by the father/grandfather. Today's children will probably have nothing so wonderful to pass down as it is the "built by Ikea" age. And then there are the "walmart fall-a-parts.
I absolutely LOVE watching you lovingly restore all these wonderful treasures. My immediate family have always had a love for wood and craftsmanship, so watching you is such a pleasure. My dad, who was a contractor, and I used to purchase or be "gifted" pieces and restore them...... However, NOTHING to the degree you do!! My sister and I still have and treasure all the pieces Daddy and I redid so many years ago. Thank you for giving these wonderful treasures new life!!
I think these are my favourite repair jobs, when its something not particularly old or valuable, but something obviously much loved. Makes me regret throwing out so much stuff over the years!
I love the way you treat any work with the same attention to detail. It doesn't matter how small a piece of paint chip or piece of wood is you will find a way to make it fit right where it belongs.
A simple box, but you can tell some care was taken in its construction, with details like the nicely chamfered cleats on the lid, and the feet. If my grandfather had made a chest like that, that I now owned, I would be thrilled to have it repaired like this. I've learned so much from your videos; I'm now in the process of bringing back to life a very old and smelly machinist's tool box, the kind with both very shallow and deeper drawers. It was never much, probably a school exercise, the case is very thin steel wrapped around a wood core and painted; the drawers are simply made, but the fronts are nice. I feel able to tackle this job, and I don't fear the outcome, because of what I've learned from you, from a distance. Thank you.
That is a great box. You can't find boxes like that anymore, you have to build them! The restoration makes the box even more beautiful! Whoever films these episodes does a great job!

A blessed and Merry Christmas to you and your extended family.
I imagine when the owners saw what Mr. Johnson had done, it brought tears of joy to their eyes. What a loving restoration. (Come to think of it, I'd love to see an occasional reaction video from a customer!)
I’ve been woodworking for many years, and the thing I love is that you can be in awe of a highly ornate piece of furniture and still be in awe of a simple wood box. Love the final product,
I have to agree with the comments so far. Your amazing ability to keep the integrity of all the pieces you work on is outstanding. This customer will be able to see all the marks the children have made to the toybox over the years ,memories other restorers would have taken away. Thank you so much for your skill and care Tom.
I grew up with the toy chest that my great grandfather made me and when my parents divorced it was left behind. I have bought several chests since but I still have such a vivid memory of that dark green chest with the drop handles on the side and the inner side compartment for 'treasures' ! @@johnsonrestoration Yes I still remember it vividly. The same Great grandad also make me a desk set, the desk was two silouettes of Micky Mouse on the side and a drop top and some shelves under it. There was also a black board that was held up but another two mickey mouse ( mice ? ) I was born in 1956 so this would have been made around then. These too were lost along with my collection of over 1000 antique bottles found in a farmers field and stored in the garden. We also lost all our family photos, us and our extended family. Mum practically ran out of the house with us in tow and wasn't thinking straight. Still we had each other and what more can we ask for. So much attention to detail even for an old mouldy box from a basement. Excellent work once again, if I were the owner I would be really happy with it.
Hi Tom glad to see you fit and well! Many years ago I inherited a box like this from an old shipwright. He had died and sometime later his family came to the yard to distribute his tools to the apprentices' and I got the box. Many years later my son when working on jobs with me used to call it 'the coffin' and hated lugging it about. As a boy starting out in a workshop the toolbox was usually the first project you would get to perform as it involved all the prep, joints, tools and finishes needed to get you oriented into woodworking. seems I already had mine ready made. I later used it to keep some of my power tools in. I also passed it on so I believe it may still be in use. Nice work Tom enjoyed the content, look forward to the next one. Thank you
This one pleased me as much or maybe even more than some of the fine antique work you’ve done. A family heirloom like this deserves everything you gave it. I would love to see the grandfather’s reaction to this.
I'm thinking the whole time: "Mr. Johnson needs to add a chain." And sure enough. . . I have to say, you put as much care and attention into this old, simple chest as you do the finest furniture that's come into your shop!!
Seeing you pay the same attention and care to this humble "toy box" as you do with some of your more upscale jobs is a testament to your integrity.

You're welcome! Have a great Holiday Season!
@@johnsonrestoration Thank you Tom! You have a great Holiday season as well!😎
Its truly amazing how you change, what some people might consider to be firewood to a nice piece of furniture.
Thanks! It's true, sometimes you just have to have the right context
This one pleased me as much or maybe even more than some of the fine antique work you’ve done. A family heirloom like this deserves everything you gave it. I would love to see the grandfather’s reaction to this.
Thanks! I appreciate your comments. Granpa probably would have said "are you kidding? throw that old thing out!"
I'm thinking the whole time: "Mr. Johnson needs to add a chain." And sure enough. . . I have to say, you put as much care and attention into this old, simple chest as you do the finest furniture that's come into your shop!!
Thank you! I appreciate it. You know you've been watching too much when you know what I'm going to do!
