A Christian Song
A meditation on the Book of Job
Lyrics by RB
The pains of men, no little thing
This we see. this life, this hell
This angst, this fear, this suffering
Confusion weaves its toxic spell
Have you thought to justify
The God who lets such horror?
Then speak it into little ear
Of the child who lost her father
Is it easy now to understand
The death, ordeal, adversity
The baby torn from Mother’s hand
Whilst praying for God’s clemency?
The world churns in blood and war
The bodies pile higher
Some drowned ones are now cast ashore
Some others burnt by fire
Is this too hard a thing, for eye to focus on?
Were you so happy just before
I sang this simple song?
Look thou look, and suffer more
When you say, I am of God!
Must answer then be given?
To those who weak and painful trod
Their way through hell to heaven?
It is not easy words they need
No “God is good” despite their eyes
They need to know beyond your creed
Despite their pain, that justice lies
Do not seek to easy speak
Your fairy garden prose
For you who never suffered ill
Daren’t talk to them that know
Then is God mean or is God cruel?
Nay, you cannot trace all God’s ways
Nor map his thoughts with words of fools,
See paths of God through human haze.
It is enough then men to say
That so it was, just here, this day
And life I have to God I give
That through me, joy or pain might live
I will not protest or lament
This time that in His presence spent
And if I suffer ordeal, torment
Then staff of God to me is leant.
Yay, though I walk, yay though I walk
Through valley dark, through valley death
His rod with me, my life, His breath
And little means man’s easy talk
Though he slay me, yet will I trust Him.
Though he slay me, yet will I trust Him.
