Probably my biggest shift is on For Your Eyes Only. The first time I saw it, I found it to be a dull retread of From Russia with Love that greatly suffered from the ill-conceived return of Roger Moore to the role. Subsequently, it has become my favorite Moore outing and one of my favorite Bond films in general.
In regards to my first complaint, I first had to admit that revisiting old plots was simply the norm for Bond films of the era, whether I liked it or not. The Spy Who Loved Me was a pretty blatant remake of You Only Live Twice. A View to a Kill was a retelling of Goldfinger for the Silicon Valley age. And, of course, this is also when Never Say Never Again came out and gave us Thunderball Too.
In comparison, For Your Eyes Only isn't all that similar to From Russia with Love, despite the return of a top-secret decoder machine as the Macguffin and the obvious similarities between Kerim Bey and Columbo. And I can now see that the film is also drawing ideas from On Her Majesty's Secret Service without blatantly copying every plot beat of that movie. For Your Eyes Only is better viewed as a return to the Fleming source material that occasionally "quotes" elements from the 1960s films that best exemplified the tone and grit of that same source material.
And as for Moore, I came to a point where I stopped complaining that I couldn't get Timothy Dalton in 1981 and just grew to accept what I got. Once I did so, I came to value Moore's performance in the role, and I now see it as his best work. He may have been more comfortable playing a version of Bond that was barely distinguishable from a parody at times, but For Your Eyes Only demonstrates that he was 100% capable of playing Fleming's morally-grey antihero if he felt like it.

  • @BenCol
    @BenCol 2 года назад +41

Which Bond films have I changed my opinion the most over time?
I think I have warmed to the Roger Moore films as I’ve grown older. In particular Octopussy has gone from what I saw as a middling entry to a Top 10 favourite.
In my teens I was a bit of a Fleming purist and, while I did enjoy the Moore films, I always held the fact they strayed from the tone and plots of the books against them, that “Bond films should be serious, not campy”, and that EON’s decision to go in that direction was a mistake. But I’ve come to appreciate that the books and the films are different things and that holding a film based on a book against its book counterpart is unfair, and that the films have varied in tone and style so much over the years that the phrase “a Bond film should be…” is a pretty meaningless one. We all have our own personal preference, of course, I do still prefer the more Fleming-esque films, but to think there’s just one objective way a Bond film should be and that all the ones that don’t fit are wrong to be that way and are bad simply by virtue of “not being what a Bond film should be”, well, I don’t think that anymore. So I’ve come to appreciate the Moore films for what they are, as opposed to disparaging them for what they’re not.
P.S.: Also Quantum of Solace - I’ve gone from thinking it was bad to thinking it’s not _that_ bad. Not great, but I’ve found myself enjoying it on recent watches.

Always great to hear more Octopussy love 😁😁 funnily enough, I’ve gone the opposite way with Quantum recently. Can always change though!

Brilliant reaction Calvin! As for Bond films I've changed my opinions on over the years, 'Licence To Kill' is definitely one of them, largely because of not owning the VHS, when I was a kid in the late 90's and early 00's, so never watched it often back then, but gotten a lot out of it the last few years. 'Casino Royale' is another one for me, whilst I liked it when I first saw it in the cinema, back in 2006 at 14 years old, the film really is a top tier favourite for me these days. 🍸

Anyway, that's changed and my favourite is now either For your eyes only or On her majestys - I can't decide. I'm hoping For your eyes only is one that's ripe for re-appraisal.

In a March 1988 treatment, Maibaum & Wilson wrote that Leiter joined the DEA *five years earlier*. Leiter, in his hospital bed, revives long enough to hear about the havoc Bond did at Krest's place. And Q tells Bond that *Leiter was his friend, too*.

seeing as you didn't LTK when you made your first review, you've come over to the light side which is very good young Padawan or should that be Jedi Master now i'm not quite sure but thank you Calvin for liking LTK for what it is. P.S. i don't know if i mentioned this before but i absolutely adore the background music.

I have to say that back in the day I got a lot of laffs out of your classic Licence to Kill review, Calvin. Especially the Sharky death meltdown. That said I am really glad you've changed your opinion on the film. Your most recent video review is up there with your very best work! As for evolving Bond film opinions, For Your Eyes Only used to bore me to tears back when I was a kid. Yet as I've grown older it's climbed higher and higher in my ranking.

I have shifted a fair bit from Tomorrow Never Dies to be honest. At first a throwaway bond adventure, I really like that it is what it is and not overly complex like the Craig era did over 5 films. Its got the henchmen, the action, the briefings, the villain, the locations and a surprisingly timely story

I've been a subscriber since your early reviews and it has been truly fascinating to see how your opinion of Dalton and his movies has evolved over the years. Back then it was a surprise that you didn't hate LTK all that much but over the years I could definitely see it climb your rankings little by little.
When I saw it for the first time as a kid I also wrote it off as "that weird violent one" (it was before Casino Royale), but it is really a Bond movie that has it all. Great Bond performance, good Bond girl, a fantastic villain and some fine action too.

It's cool that you've gone on this journey with this film! It's quite hilarious, but it's a film that takes a while to grow on!
    Hilarious as always!
    Keep up the good work!

I respect the fact that you go back and watch older videos. Before my students and found my channel, I deleted a lot of my older videos because I cringed at them. After my channel was found out, I removed everything.

Change of opinion on Live and Let Die for sure! Always gave it a negative score based on the exclusion of Q, but then Casino Royale featured a non-Q dependant film, I had to look at it with a different lens. More classic Calvin reaction vids, please! Take care!

Yes I can definitely tell your new Licence to Kill review, was much better then your old review. that you're reacting to, Calvin. I would really like to see you do another reaction video to a old review. please, but only if you want to. the James Bond film, I have changed my mind on over the years is. The Man with the Golden Gun, I used to think it was such a boring entry in the franchise. but now years later, I love it & its one of my all time favourites. :)

I enjoy the little sketches in your reviews, and wonder what will happen to those great clips once you have reviewed the films again. Don't worry Calvin, after you get through Deep Diving and reviewing the entire film series for the third time, and also commenting on your first reviews, there will still be plenty of years left to wait until Bond 26 comes out.

This was absolutely hilarious. It is interesting to see how your thoughts on the film have changed and how the change started happening even then. I would like to see more of these but I understand why this is painful for you to do. Also, I feel that my view of License to Kill is the one that has changed the most as well.

Great video, Licence to Kill is definitely one of my favourite Bond films along with Octopussy, The World Is Not Enough, Goldfinger, Casino Royale and On Her Majesty's Secret Service (My favourite Bond film)

Growing up with Roger as Bond, even as a kid I was astonished what Timothy Dalton did with the character. Astonished in a good way. His appearance was disappointingly brief and I felt Pierce went back to and beyond the comic version of Bond that Roger pretty much established. It's interesting to find out how time and personal life experiences change our views on many things. I really enjoy your reviews and I thoroughly enjoy the fact that you show how much your opinion has changed over the years.
