Lotus and I shared a tent on her last hike, the Zpacks Duplex, but normally she carries a Gossamer Gear The One! A lot of folks had asked for the video so we hope you enjoy!
THANK YOU! We really need more women doing gear lists, and this one was a good one. Some valuable insights and very easy to watch. Loved your laid-back tone. Nice one Lotus. 👌🏻
The backpack doesn't seem comfortable for longer hikes as it sdoeant have stiff back... I would probably add a bit of weight so it's more comfortable and you won't actually feel the difference
i swear you two have like the perfect voice for the way both of you tell your stories and describe things not overly excited but can tell you have passion for it and believe in what you are saying
Just found your channel and Florida Trail videos. What a great job you guys did! I’m a native Floridian and have only section hiked a few parts of the trail in central Florida. I’ve watch several other videos about the trail and I feel that your’s is the best! Thanks for sharing your experience!
I just wanted to say that I copped a nice yoyo as my luxury item for my AT SOBO (hopefully) this year because of you, and so far it's proving to be 63g well spent.
Don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, but the headlamp shown at 6:54 is actually the Nitecore NU25, I have the exact same thing. This is easily one of the best lightweight headlamps available, definitely worth checking out. Fully submersible, USB rechargable, night hikable (think wintertime), excellent broadspread true white light setting for reading. Really full featured for just the 52 grams (1.8 oz) weight including the standard headband, or even lighter if you tinker your own attachment system with a shock cord or a clip on. (And no, I am not taking money from Nitecore.)
There was that moment when the two of y'all were heading down the trail in opposite directions, and suddenly you both noticed another hiker with a yo-yo.
the content is surprisingly inspiring esp. for female hiker. youtube was playing different videos on my phone and this video is like, the way she speaks is comfortable to listen to. half way of this video i think i should subscribe this channel and found out it is jupiterhikes'! (already subscribed)
Thanks for sharing what worked for you. I just got a pair of Topo Ultraventures last week and they are already my favorite pair of shoes ever. Wide toebox like an Altra, but more comfortable for me due o the slight drop and cushioning. I plan to get another pair so I have a clean pair to wear off trail.
I really appreciate all the info in this video! this is exactly where I want to get to, regarding light weight backpacking. I feel very inspired, thank you
The Ultraventures are great, especially since Topo started using Vibram outsoles. More tapered midfoot than Altra, plus a little drop while retaining the wider toe box. The Terraventure 2's are nice for off trail terrain. Looks like the GG Nighlight fits better in the newer Pa'lante's. Thanks for the video, y'all.
Cool good presentation, enjoyed you gear review . I like your Jupiter hikes T-shirt I have one in orange 😁 I get more comments of that shirt than anything I own 👍
What about a shelter...?! I love learning more about ultralight and I try to buy as mostly light as I can (850 down Big Agnes sleeping bag to save weight) but can’t fathom how someone travels without something as simple as an ace bandage for a sprained ankle or at least an extra pen. Or nail clippers! I guess it all depends on the location of the trail, duration of the trip and re-supply points. I wish I could drop the weight of a bear canister in some areas but I get it. Very cool ideas, nonetheless and I enjoyed seeing a female perspective. Maybe I’ll do a backpacking load out gear video. We need more!
Hey! Forgot to mention the shelter in the vid, but she uses a gossamergear the one when alone, and we shared a zpacks duplex when hiking together. As for the other stuff, generally on most of these long trails we aren't too far from a town so nail clippers for instance are on a buy as we need basis. Same goes for medical stuff, Advil is often enough to get to town, from there we can get more serious help, supplies, or an out back home. Some things like an ace bandage could probably be improvised with a shirt, bandana, or something of the like. Having broken a foot on trail in 2018, and sprained an ankle in 2012 I still don't find the need to carry one myself but would never fault anyone for wanting to have that safety net to aid in getting to the next town. Cheers! I'm glad you enjoyed the video
found the gossamer packs incredibly uncomfortable no matter how it was packed; until i slipped a thin, flexible pvc cuttingboard (ca. 8x12") inside the pack facing the back… this increases the weight only by about 1,5 oz but increases the comfort tremendously. Thoughts anyone?
Hi Lotus! Loved your vid....I too have the BSR stove, Montbell Versalite rain jacket and Montbell baselayer shirt! I also LOVE merino. Got a question for you....what do you sit on during breaks? Looks like your pad stays in your bag all the time, so clean! And you don't use any kind of air pad? So light, so jelly... I tried the Palante but couldn't get it to work with a z-lite pad and would never get it to work with a bear can. Hoping to get out to the Sierra for some cross country stuff or just ANYWHERE really. Did get 500+/- done on the Hayduke before all the NPs closed. Hope u r hangin in there and get to do eat PCT miles soon. ~Sunkist~
Sunkist! Love following your adventures. On breaks I either sit on my pack, a rock, or the ground. Sit pads are nice, but I didn't really miss it when it was gone. The air pads kept popping on me and I was much happier when I didn't have to deal with that!
Is there a 4 season Ultralight tent...? Is the base weight different for 4 season Ultralight...thru hiking? P.S. Does anyone have a 4 season Ultralight gear list they can share...please?
I'd love to backpack in shorts but idk how people do it. I'm not skinny enough. I have to wear lightweight trail pants or capris. Also I burn easy so less sunscreen. Also I'm team inflatable pillow haha
She's been wearing it a lot around her place(I would say town, but we haven't been out much) she likes it, no thumb holes is her only complaint. The kuiu fleece I have has no kangaroo pocket which is a bigger complaint
Very well done. Jupiter is granite hard core with that 1/8" carpet pad thing - however, that foam Gossamer Gear short pad well qualifies as plain hard core ! Enjoyed watching the Fla trail hike, the filming was inspiring, as it often is on this channel !
How do you feel about the GG night light in colder temps? What would you confidently push it to? And, did you find you need to remove everything In the pack to get to it? (I find my thin light super sticky so it stays on the outside. - good for not sliding around in a tent though).
I have used it in below freezing temps and I was fine, but I hate inflatable pads and probably overcompensate on clothing to make up for that. It remains in my pack until I take everything else out.
Hello Jupiter! May I ask what size is the Hiking Essential shirt that Lotus is wearing on this video. I wanted to order one for me but i’m torn between a medium or large. Thanks!
Thanks for your very informative video. What did you use for a groundsheet? Obviously the 7lb did not include water and food. You don't seem to have a knife, or a tool for getting fuel.
that was my first thought no tent or tarp or hammock no way for long distance hiking but if you share it is an other storie I hiked long distance women alone ultralight when it did not exist with a light tarp when nobody did it but got to have a shelter now in my 70 with a painful knee and surgery will get hammock
lotus! thanks for the info..so what you showed us was 7lbs?also for shelter, do you prefer the GOssemer THE ONE or the zpack duplex? If I add that correctly, now you at just about 8# 5-6 ozs?
i see below she shared a sleeping set up with Jupiter (was this included in the weight? but didn't see a sleeping pad? nor back up map/compass? or were these shared too?
This was super informative! How long does it usually take to charge your headlamp from your battery pack? I’m hesitant about switching over to a usb powered headlamp.
Enjoyed the gear list. Interesting about the Kula cloth... have been thinking of picking one of those up. Did you (Lotus) like the Gossamer Gear backpack when you had it? I’ve been eyeing that as well.
The Gossamer Gear packs don't seem to work for me, but maybe it's my body type. They feel too square/bulky in a way where the weight is always pulling me backwards, if that makes sense.
I carry this yo-yo so Jupiter doesn’t have to yo-yo alone! 💙 Great job on the video. Easy to understand, and beautiful scenery. Very helpful breakdown of your gear and weights in the Lotus Gear List in show notes.
I am a woman but don't use women specific stuff because I am quite muscular/broad shoulders etc... So wouldn't go for gender specific clothing. Love the super light rain jacket, toilet tool, bandana (so good), Opsak, dry bags, battery pack, first aid pack, tiny stove, Toaks pot, etc...Nice work.
Yes, woman use it to wipe after they pee. Having it hang outside your pack allows it to dry faster and let’s the sun’s UVC rays kill the cooties. Poop requires paper and should be packed out, not buried. HTH

@@JupiterHikes thanks, now how much added weight with food and water - total pack wt? thanks - estimating 5 days 8-10 lbs - so pack under 20lbs total for 5 day outing...?

yeah I was just going to ask about this.
Oh, cool - you just answered a question I asked in a comment! This would bring her base weight up a bit but not much. Thanks!
What is the weight of her tent, the one?
@@nedsled2994 19.93 oz / 565 g, per Gossamer Gear's website. It also needs 6 stakes so another ~50-70 grams depending on which stakes you bring.
JupiterHikes Nice I was wondering what she carried for a tent. Thanks

I tried one out and it ended up making me feel dirtier somehow. Also didn't enjoy having to carry a dedicated bidet bottle.
