Perfect time for this...we just got dumped in with over a foot of snow yesterday and it's still going...time to bring the bike in and do a winter overhaul. I have a fork around the same age that could use an overhaul.
There is a caveat regarding lowers cleaning tho. Usually with forks that are so overdue for service, there is already some gunk inside the lowers, which if not removed, will damage the stantions. Gotta clean the lowers too, just like you did with the inside of the stantions. Also its good practice to do the full external cleaning PRIOR to disassembling the fork. Saves a lot of time and some ml of degreaser too.
