Most people hate tax season. Deadlines, paperwork, maybe even some math. Worst of all: when money is tight, you don't want to give any of it away.
But what many don't know is that the tax system is the cornerstone of Canada's (and Ontario's) poverty reduction strategy. There are several programs that offer direct cash to Ontarians living on a low income - but only if they file their taxes.
To help, community service organizations across the province hold free tax clinics to help get money to people who need it most. In 2022, those clinics helped Ontarians access $6.3 million worth of benefits, credits, and refunds.
