Sometimes Jim's improvisations - excursions into the unknown - seem to be hanging by the merest thread... so minimally understated... but then that's why he's my all time favorite guitarist. I adore this stuff - have done ever since I heard him in the JG3 when I was a kid. What a talent!
See. He's like, in a tiny place performing where its basically nothing at all special and yet (on another note) this is practically the best guitar solo I've heard... he is so fluent and perfect. He constantly recreates and adds to the theme and point to every tune out there. Famous means you are getting credit for being spacial out of a group of people in a category... I think Jim Hall should be viewed as special amongst the other guitarist and somehow be "double famous". We are very lucky to see this man for the duration of his lifespan as I get sad and let down thinking of the early passing of other greats such as Joe Pass and even Jimi Hendrix. His solo is completely amazing! And guess what? While the bass player is soloing, Hall's comping is another REMARKABLE solo in it's own. If I had to choose between what I would rather learn, the solo or the comping, I would choose the comping and little people know that the comping is the highest level of guitar playing. Comping like Hall is near impossible to most, even well know guitarists and I would do anything for transcriptions of Halls'. Please let me know if you have any sources that will lead me to comping like this. Please and thank you.
Always sounding modern and with a great concept behind his playing, interesting how he plays fragments of the theme then throws in improvised melodies, great comping too,a great inspiration to listen to,thanks for sharing,Vic.

jim hall was the first jazz guitarist i ever fell in love with, and this video reminds me why. first heard him with the JG3 as well!
I just noticed, he works the volume knob very well. His style is like a breath of fresh for me to hear musically.
