    Do you keep some of the apple tree trunks to season for firewood? Apple wood smells lovely when it burns and is great for in your smoker - applewood smoked bacon?

    Al I just want to thank you for being such a good example. You're a hard worker and I appreciate the fact that you are not ashamed of praying in your vlog. Thanking God for His protection is always a good thing! Your place is really looking good. I missed watching the goofy goats today. Olivia was a little scared of seeing the skunks again.

    :) Olivia I loved your art! & the driftwood will make a nice garden garden decor...you could probably convince Gina to have it inside if you clean it up and stain it o.-. Glad the skunks weren't back. I did notice that other predators can easily drop into your charged fence paddock from the apple tree (or so it looks) so glad you lock them up tight at night after a look see. :) I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the new goat area.

    Those trees you cut down with the big lumpy areas you should donate to a local wood turner. Those are burls and they might be able to turn them into a a cool little bowl. Most turners would take the donation and make you something in return.

    I'm wondering if the skunk didn't spray as they got shocked squeezing through the fence. However, they they should have sprayed upon leaving the chicken yard. I'm thinking the mama skunk was too big to fit through the mesh. Justin Rhodes just got an electric fence with small mesh at the bottom to keep chicks in... maybe a consideration next time you purchase... This fence could go to the goats? ❤🌅🌵

      Regardless of the electric fencer's joule rating, if the open circuit voltage rating is too low, it won't penetrate the skunks fur and they can pass thru without getting popped. I've run into that before. Now, I use a low impedance 2 joule fencer with a "no load " voltage rating of 11,800 volts. This will penetrate thru the fur and give them a hell of a shock. It's a powerful machine, but I have cattle too, so I just use it for all the animals. I've been popped several times and I swear that thing will draw the devil out of you. Buy a strong machine the first time, ground it right and be done with it, or you will end up like me....with a collection of weaker machines that I no longer use. Also, keep a backup fencer ready to go in case your main one fails, because it will sooner or later.

      i am retiring in a couple years and we will be hopefully moving out of over populated new jersey to a hopefully hobby farm, but we are probably going south, not north, we are so tired of snow and nasty weather.
      but even in the middle of suburbia we have a coop with ducks and chickens! I'm sure the neighbors think we are crazy , but they have never tasted fresh duck eggs!
      i so envy your lifestyle, and hope to be able to have a chance to experience the life you are having now.

    Hey Al, the groove that the chain rides in collects all kinds of debri and will cause the chain to raise up like that, not oil properly, or even worse pop off the sprocket tip. I Clean mine almost every time I use a saw. Also just a tip if you didn't already know, make sure to flip the bar every new chain or chain sharpening plus grease the sprocket tip and clutch bearing. Amazing how many people forget to do this... I guess out of sight out of mind. Safe cutting from one saw user to another!

    • @jeffperry9274
      @jeffperry9274 6 лет назад +2

      Labs are great dogs, but they are bird dogs and sometimes you have to watch them around chickens lol, the draw back to the Pyrenees is that they tend to roam if not in a fenced area, but if they are gotten when they are puppies and raised up around any type of live stock they are second to none as far as protecting them.

      Yep, my dogs will kill any skunk that comes into the yard. Skunks don't even slow them down. I've found many dead skunks in the yard. They do need to be outdoor dogs though, cause they do get a good dose of skunk cologne. Also, down south where I live, Copperheads, Western Diamondback rattlesnakes and Rat snakes are very common for most of the year. My dogs get bit every year messing with copperheads. I've found large 6 ft rat snakes living in the chicken coop several times over the years. The chickens don't seem to mind them in there, but they eat a lot of eggs. We usually just relocate the snakes since they are very beneficial for rodent control. I found an Owl in the coop a few years ago and to this day, I still have no idea how that Owl got in there!

    Glad the skunks seemed to have moved on. Chunks of charcoal in NYC will help absorb the skunk odors if you throw some inside.
    Rewatch the saw sharpening part of the video. Your fore hand goes up, and rear hand down on each stroke of the file. The stroke needs to be level throughout. You should be able to sharpen a chain without a vise if you're stroking the file correctly. The rocking stroke you use, causes the file to catch rather than glide smoothly. Between the cutting teeth at the chip rakers. These help clear chips from the cut. They also set the depth of the cutting teeth as they cut through the wood. Every time you sharpen the cutting teeth, they get a little bit shorter and these rakers also need to be filed down. You should have a file guide for your saw to adjust the height of the chip rakers. A well sharpened chain should throw out chips, if your throwing out sawdust rather than chips, your rakers are too tall and need to be filed down.

    Al, I noticed when you were sharpening your chain, it didn't look as though you were going far enough to get the rounded over part on each tooth ? I think if you did a few more swipes while pulling up on the file would help to get the top edge of the chain ? Also take a couple swipes on the rakers/drags and you'll be amazed on how fast the saw can munch through a tree !!! Love these types of videos and still hate them skunks, thumbs up !!! Edit: Love your family breaking bread together and the prayers, great values.

      They make a Husqvarna version as well. Be careful with the stihl one since there basic 3/8 file is 13/64 and Husqvarna / Oregon is 7/32.

      3/8 is the pitch. not the file dia. 13/64-5.2mm is the file dia. (stihl) or the 3/8 picco uses a 5/32-4.0mm dia
