Renesito Avich The cool thing about Open Em tuning is that it's the same as the top 3 strings of a Guitar making is ideal for song covers. If you're using a traditional set up that has the Octave E Strings, the Open Em tuning will work too but it'll be ideal as a Rhythm instrument, while the Modern Setup makes a good lead instrument.

Renesito Avich Em and F# Minor Tuning are a step apart. So with GBE Tuning in the Octave E String setup I have a very neat sound that will go well with my singing.

Renesito Avich Although the Modern setup in GBE Tuning (G4 G3, B3 B3, E4 E4) is used by Pancho Amat. The Traditional setup in the GBE Tuning (G4, G3, B3 B3, E3 E4) allows your Chords to have very tight Voicings like George Sheering did on Piano.

Open Em Tuning (G4/G3, B3/B3, E3/E4) is perfect for song covers. A really good song that you can play in that tuning is Lean On Me arranged by Roger Emerson (SATB Score and CD bought from JW Pepper) and I'd like you to do that by strumming the Chords at the top of the Piano Part in that GBE Tuning with Octave E Strings cause it's going to sound very bright and shiny. Another reason for that is because sadly Bill Withers passed away.
Renesito Avich The Martin LXM Tres (which will be back in production real soon) is rather beautiful because it's made out of Mahogany & has a 25.5 in scale length like a regular Guitar which gives it a really special sound. The gauges of strings from the D'addario EJ41 Extra Light Gauge 12 String Guitar strings are shown below & are what you can use to string your Cuban Tres up.
G String: .008 & .021 (Octave G Strings)
C String: .013 * 2 (2 Unison B Strings tuned up a half step to Middle C)
E String: .026 & .009 (Octave E Strings for Traditional Setup) or .009 * 2 (Unison E Strings for Modern setup).

also if so , which guitar string (E, A, D, G, B, E) should I install for each position on the tres cubano G4-G3 - C4-C4 - E4-E4 ?

Renesito Avich If you replace the Unison C String with an Octave4Plus 4 gauge High C then you can get a 21st century sound.

@@RenesitoAvich Uh you mean "That's Right, I forgot to Mention it" which means you need to work on your comment typing more. Now both setups (Traditional & Modern) have Octave G Strings & Unison C Strings, the only difference is the E Strings the Traditional has Octave E Strings (Octave E string is an Octave lower) & the Modern Setup has unison E Strings. Pancho Amat tuning is the same as the top 3 strings of the Guitar making it ideal for Pancho Amat music, very Guitarist friendly, & perfect for song covers found in Piano-Vocal-Guitar sheet music. Imagine that I have 2 Tres Guitars in 2 different set ups (Traditional & Modern) & are in Pancho Amat tuning (GBE), I'd use that tuning to arrange lots of popular songs for 2 Cuban Tres Guitars w/ optional Vocals. The way it's going to work is the Tres in the Traditional Setup (Octave E Strings) plays the Rhythm Cuban Tres part, & the Tres in the Modern Setup (Unison E Strings) plays the Lead Cuban Tres Part. Not even musicologists from Cuba knows exactly when the Tres Guitar change from "one" or "the other" setup.
The Tres Player is free to use both, what matter is what are you looking for achieve on the instrument technique.
Like I said, I like both.
If you listen carefully you'll find the same concept in this album. But the Idea you mentioned it's actually great.

3:44 Very Jazzy sound. Pancho Amat used this tuning cause it turns out he used to play Jazz Guitar in a Jazz Band just before switching to the Cuban Tres. With this Open Em tuning (GBE, regardless of the Traditional or Modern Setup) The progressive elements from Jazz really make the songs sound really interesting.

C Major & D Major tuning are a step apart meaning that if we're in D major tuning we could treat the Tres as a transposing instrument in D (as with F# Minor & E Minor Tuning).
I use Magma strings which are rather interesting cause they're Silver plated wound

maestro los pares de cuerdas se afinan con el mismo sonido?
El primer par en mi al unisono, el segundo par en do en unisono, el tercer par en sol pero con con su octava alta para esta ultima cuerda debe ser mas delgada que las primeras para que no se rompa o malogre el puente por la presión acá en Lima yo usaba unas que se llaman sextillos y son mas delgaditas y aguantan mas tensión, así afina y combina sus cuerdas este gran musico cubano.
Bueno yo usaba el primer par con su octava baja, era mi gusto, hasta un tiempo estuve tocando con tres pares de cuerdas de tres, pero era difícil mantenerla siempre bien afinada toda la actuación debido al propio ataque de la ejecución, espero te sirve mi humilde consejo, saludos.

Hola, where can I buy the right strings for my Tres? I bought one but I don't like having the octave on the high one. I found the right set of strings but when I received them, I found out that I need strings with loops and not balls. A link please?!!! I like the major triad afinación. G C E or F D F# THANKS

Jairo Gil Hola, Bueno el mío hace la octava en el traste 12, el Tres originalmente hace la “octava” en el Traste 10, y los hay de 14 también. Esto depende del diámetro que tenga el Diapasón en Brazo y de la altura de las cuerdas.

Hola mi estimado yo te recomiendo si ya tienes una guitarra acustica o criolla , comprate 3 cuerdas sencillas calibre 009 , 2 cuerdas censillas calibre 011 y una entorchada calibre 022 , ojo las cuerdas ienen que ser cuerdas de metal para acustica y afinas en la afinacion tradicional C mayor , E - C - G , 1era nota E calibre 9 al unisono , la 2da nota C al unisono y la 3era nota G octavada , la entorchada una octava abajo . espero te funcione , prueba investiga amigo , yo tambien soy nuevo en esto Saludos desde el Perú

Desconozco todo sobre el tema, aunque me encantan el timbre y la potencia que tienen. Lo escuché por primera vez, hace años ejecutado por Mr. David Hidalgo en un tema de Raúl Malo & The Super Seven . Pregunta técnica: A qué distancias van una cuerda de otra en cada par y entre pares?. Me encontré una imágen con una especie de hoja de mediddas pero no se aprecia bien...Me gustaría tener el dato para no equivocarme. La puede ver aquí:

Pancho Amat is known for that cause it turns out he used to play the Guitar just before switching to the Cuban Tres. Lot's of musicians (including me) like to replace the 2'nd High E String w/ an Octave E String tuned an Octave below the High E String (Em tuning: G4/G3, B3/B3, E3/E4) cause it extends the range & produces a brighter sound.
