I've just got hold of a few goose feathers, from the wings. Make a tiny, short cut into the vane of the feather, just at the tip of the feather. Then hold the shorter half of the feather and start stripping it away from the central vane until you have removed the entire biot. You can google "goose biot" for some pictures. It takes some hard work, but is worth it.
I have read that goose feathers are especially strong, as geese are acquatic birds. Turkey biots are longer, but for some reason it looks like geese feathers have been preferred over any other type.
palmyrajo You must get the front half of the longest wing feathers of geese. This part of the feather is called a BIOT. So I think goose biots are the best. They fan out when you wrap them around a wire, and look spiky, like fir needles!

14 to 16 gauge depending on the length of your tree and whether you plan to have longer or shorter branches at the bottom, add Christmas lights on, etc.
I just made a tree using 18 gauge and that seemed to be perfect. It's a 2ft tree, but I think if you made 5-6ft trees or bigger, you'd need a bit heavier wire. I'd like to know where to get the biot feathers other then eBay. Anyone?
