- Medium Format Film Photography - Yashica Mat 6x6 Fomapan 400. We got a few days of nice weather and some snow a few weeks ago here in Ireland so I took the film camera to the Dam/Park with a roll of Fomapan 400 and tried to create a nice set of photos. Not all the photos turned out as I wanted but overall I'm pretty happy with it & I had a good few days out taking photos. I'd love to know which photos were your favourite or if you have had the same problems I did, let me know👍

Really happy with how this video and most of the photos turned out. Not bad for the 2nd roll of film haha Which shot was your favourite? Also has anyone else had the same issues I did?
This is a very honest video, talking through the learning curve which we all experience. Thank you!
Hey Peter, thanks very much. Just trying to enjoy the process, glad you enjoyed it.
very beatiful content ! well prepeared video ! Film shots are amazing !
Hey! Thank you appreciate that :) It was a nice few days of film photography.
I've just shot & developed my first two rolls of Foma 400.. Love it.
Loving your style, even the ones you don't like. They're all an adventure!!
Hey! Good stuff love it, it looks pretty good for a cheaper film.
Thanks very much really appreciate that. It sure is, a big learning experience and I am enjoying it :)
@@MacnTeensVisuals yeah I've picked up a few rolls cheap.. nice not to feel I have to be too frugal with the shots!
@@acecreates Exactly, I've only started but I already feel myself holding back on some shots because of the 12 photo limit on the roll + the price of developing etc. So trying out cheaper ones is fun especially if they turn out nice.
Love it! Great shots and chill atmosphere, is`s all what i need after hard day at work ;>
Thank you appreciate that :) Happy to help haha
Loved the video and shots! It was a good reminder to take out my Yashica Mat and keep practicing with it!
Hey Matthew! Thanks very much man appreciate it. It was a nice few days out shooting, glad it gave you some inspiration. Loved using the Yashica Mat so far :) Definitely takes a while to get used to after using the Fuji all the time haha
@@MacnTeensVisuals oh I believe it! I mainly shoot on an XT3, so going back and forth can be a little bit of mental gymnastics at times cause of the flipped image. All part of the fun though!
@@matthewmendoza5729 Haha Very true, I'm getting used to it a bit more now but at certain times it is very strange indeed. They are definitely satisfying to shoot with though, love that it's all mechanical.
Hello from a fellow XT30 shooter! Great video and content, the beauty lies in the discovery and journey and you do it very well. Subscribed :)
Hey there 🙂 Thanks very much appreciate the support & totally agree you have to enjoy the learning process & the journey. Glad you enjoyed watching, have a nice week ✌
I think the bench photo looks great (the way you presented it). It just leads you trough, not so many distractions on the way. yeah the spotlight is a pity but it looks great ;)
EDIT: I just got further in the video, that transition of photos is really great
Thank you I appreciate that. Glad you like the photos. I really love how this video turned out and although all the shots didn't turn how I would have liked, there are definitely a few I really like. It was certainly a learning process.
I was searching film photography videos and this notification came in ✌️😅
Hey Kamran :) Oh really well that's cool haha Hope you enjoy it man 🙃
Nice video, thanks for sharing. I didn't know that Yashica Mat 6x6 negatives also have the two "v" on the left side, like Hasselblad negatives.
Cheers Paul 👍 Oh you have a keen eye haha Those aren't actually the original negative borders though. The lab we use doesn't have the option to scan the borders so I added them myself during editing. They could well be Hasselblad borders but I'm not sure to be honest lol I do love the look of the borders particularly on B&W.
I recently dug out my old Yashica Mat. To my dismay, the lens was fogged. Between kids and a career, it got stuffed away in a musty old bag. The lens cleaned up nicely, and I'm eager to take it out for a spin. The camera will improve my digital photography. You have to slow down with it and visualize what the shot might look like. I want to see if it is compatible with my modern studio strobes.
Totally agree Jerold, glad to hear you were able to get the lens cleaned up. I love the slower approach and I think it definitely helps me get a higher keep rate when it comes to photos. Hope those strobes work well with it too. 👍
I have had a Yashcamat 124G from new for around 40 years and, yes, they are notorious for growing fungus and haze inside the lens if left unused. No idea why but it may be due to one or more of the materials or lubricants used in the construction. Anyway, mine was successfully cleaned (twice) by specialist camera repairers. It's a camera that benefits from being properly serviced from time to time. The film mechanism in them needs re-lubricating occasionally. By the way, the light meter in mine is still spot-on after all these years.
Great video. How did you get your drone shots to match up so well with the fuji colors?
Cheers Tyler glad you enjoyed it man. I used the comparison & match feature in Premiere Pro Lumetri panel and then slightly adjusted it 👍
When loading the film, I noticed that you rolled the film leader "past" the green 120 marker, and on to the red 220 marker.
amazing shots, thanks for the inspiration sir! sub +1
Thanks very much Albert appreciate it & glad you found some inspiration from it :)
I would have liked to see less b-roll and more images that you took and the process you went through. I know this type of video is what most RUclipsrs do now days. I usually watch RUclips throughout the day but like shorter videos that get to the point. Great images by the way!
I get it, this is just the style I love making. Film-making is a big part of these videos for me and I enjoy doing it as well as the photography. Some videos have more cinematography than others, it just depends where I am really. Glad you like the images though I appreciate it.
About the thing where focusing to infinity doesn’t seem to get things in focus, did you figure that out? I’ve had manual lenses on my mirrorless camera that would focus beyond infinity when I twisted the focus ring too the end, could something like that be the issue?
Hey Eirik! Yes I think my camera may be slightly off and probably just needs adjusted ever so slightly. Most of the time I am able to manage especially for landscapes etc I just focus on something in the mid ground and use something like F11 or F16 and it normally works okay,.
Ace, is the infinity on this model supposed to be hard-stop infinity? Might be that it isn't a hardstop one. I've not got that model so wouldn't know.
Cheers Scott! I only really paid attention to the settings on the focus knob yesterday when I was out shooting. No it doesn't seem to be a hard stop but honestly I can't really make sense of those settings it doesn't seem to line up with what I'm seeing in the ground glass lol After a little research seems most people say to just ignore those settings 🤔
It seems some of these images were taken with a Hasselblad
Haha You have an eagle eye. I actually just wanted to put a black border around them and used this one not realising it was a Hassleblad negative border lol
Find a piece of ground glass, open the back of the camera and place the ground glass where the film sits. Start focus at infinity and the aperture wide open, and check the ground glass to see if it is in focus too. Repeat for other distances. You might need a magnifying loupe to check the GG. With luck it is only your focusing technique that is at fault and not the focus calibration of the camera or the height of the focusing screen. BTW, I have been doing film photography of all formats for over 40 years. Do yourself a favour and put the camera on a tripod. Medium Format photography is not like digital. The camera needs to be on a solid support. Good effort BTW.
Hey there, thanks for the tip. I will see if I can get one and give that a try. Currently editing another video where I shot with it again and the results are definitely a lot better this time using higher apertures and a tripod. Cheers though appreciate it :)
Why are our images not sharp are there issues with the camera?
As I mentioned in the video, focusing to infinity was the problem. It seems like it focuses past infinity and with a lower aperture this leaves everything soft.
@@MacnTeensVisuals Thanks.
awesome video! just watched this after finishing your first two film photography videos. i recently found a Walz Walzflex TLR camera at an antique store in my area and i had it CLA'd. i'm currently shooting my first roll and can't wait to get it shot/developed! (just waiting for this rain to stop... 🥲
Thanks very much Ian 😀 Oh really, haven't came across those myself but what a great name for a camera. Have fun and one little bit of advise, try shot F11 or even F16 for some scenes it got me some great results 👍
@@MacnTeensVisuals oh yeah definitely, I've watched all of your videos about film 😂 problem is, it's been raining for the past four days where I am in Ontario, Canada so I've been limited to shooting shots indoors. I'm shooting at 3.6 for most of these shots so I really hope they're not all underexposed. We finally have sun for the next few days so hopefully I get a couple well exposed shots 😄
