My favorite part of cooking is seeing how foods become tradition in a place by simply using the ingredients local to their area. Cooking has so much more to do with the culture and geography and using what’s available in the place you are. That to me is a beautiful thing that I think often is overlooked.
That is so true! Mostly what becomes popular is what the common people create, share, and enjoy. It only becomes a delicacy when it’s enjoyed by the rest of the world!
No one is preparing this meal like this. It's literally unhealthy for a dog. If this "soul food" was that good and a percentage of blacks were cooking this daily was isn't there a multitude of "soul food" restaurants in or outside of the black "community" for other cultures want to eat/ You know, like the Asian, Italian, and Mexican cultures have restaurants in and outside of their communities. The way that I look at "soul food" is like having a slice of pizza, a taco, ramen noodles, and salad on your plate with a bottle of Sprite. There's nothing original.
Sweet potatoes are organically grown in US as well. We just have alot of varieties. I prefer the white or the yellow variety. Good job on soul food. There are a.ot of greens that we fry down South. Mustard greens are cooked with pork and the pot liquor is amazing...especially on a cold winter day. Collard greens are cooked differently. But you did an amazing job. 👏🏾 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I LOVE how honest your wife is. The fact she can tell you that she doesn’t like something is beautiful.
lol is pretty normal
But for her, to be willing to try even tho it’s very different from what she’s used to is pretty cool
everything quang makes, she doesnt like.. like wtf..
@@cosworthTV Haven’t seen her genuinely enjoy eating with enthusiasm anything he cooks which was the energy that attracted me to his channel to begin with. Now, my anticipation at the end just falls flat every time she cringes in distaste with each bite. Kinda ruins the entire vibe. I totally get her pallet is not accustomed to Western food but it still kills the vibe. I enjoyed all the vids he did solo before. Kept waiting for it to improve. I’ve unsubscribed. Now I search for his channel every so often just to see if he’s returned to Canada yet.Even then I think he should either be the only one who eats the food or wait until she acclimates enough to crave Western food before he includes her in the taste test which regrettably is a slim chance. I prefer to watch other cooking channels where people are savoring the food so intensely it makes me want to recreate the recipe. Sad.
@@mamabirdie734 totally agree. Its like she wont ever agree that its good
When it comes to greens Collard, Mustard, and Turnips are all considered soul food. I like a mixture of all 3.
Same here
Yes... I do mixed greens as well!
I only like collards the others are tart
@@dre4402 add a little sugar
@$murf107..get the smaller ones and it also depends on the season and what seasonings you are using for mustard and turnips.. also make sure you use good Smokey meat
I remember the video you made lemon pepper wings for the boys at the old condo unit and they just didn’t like it like you expected! Just like your lovely wife’s reaction! It must be a western thing, because like you Quang, I love the lemon pepper taste 👌🏼 love from Aus
are you a cook or something? you are one of the greatest here on youtube and you are a great man, you are ambassador for asian cooks who are all around talented.
I can't express how happy I am for u that u found ur one and only!! I'm so proud of u !! Team aquarius :)
The fact that she likes collard greens is a win lol u made the right choice lol
Yum. Order number 69 gets me every time 😆 I must be order #70 cause I'm always waiting.
I'm with the wife. I hate lemon pepper seasoning! Lol you killed the Mac and cheese with that darn hot sauce. Lol Also, it's good to do a sharp, mild, and creamy cheese. It's not real cheese but adding Velveeta to my mac is a must! But I've had plenty that didn't have it and it was still tasty. Next time try a honey garlic glaze for the seafood!
Omg QT lol making her keep all the food in her mouth was making me anxious lol I’ve never eaten soul food like that so idk what you were doing 😂
@Daryl Dixon TV I suppose! But if its someones first time trying I would imagine they would want to try each item individually first and then mix and mash in the mouth if their choice lol🤷🏽♂️
@@shutupandeatasmr4498 definitely agree
candied yams with lemony shrimp mixed with mac and cheese
@@shutupandeatasmr4498 Yes I agree.....it was probably overwhelming 😅 #BLESSINGS
Forreal. Let her just eat the food and enjoy it. He's acting like there's a specific weird way to eat soul food where every dish has to be in your mouth before you swallow.
I miss his old videos when he was jacked, ate KFC in his car and walked Kitty. RIP
Interesting taste discoveries. I'm Chinese American and sometimes I don't like lemon taste in food but sometimes I do. I like subtle flavor of lemon more than fresh lemon juice. I enjoy lemon candy, lemonade, and lemon iced tea, but not lemon meringue pie, lemon juice, or lime flavored things like Takis. Sometimes I like salmon with lemon but I prefer it without. And I haven't tried lemon chicken yet. The flavor is nice but the sourness isn't, in my opinion.
Your wife is so beautiful Quang! You too are adorable and congratulations on the marriage man! I’ve been watching your videos religiously (when I’m not working lol) for years now man. Keep up the good work!
The way she looks at you when you opened the lid.
She's in love 😍😍
Hahah she's so cute! Love her and the brother in law's honest reviews!
Mustard greens are my favorite. Collards are too big and rough for me.
I how she tells you what she likes and don't like and you reply so kind it shows trust and love that can trust you with honesty and she can trust you will love her still also great cooking looks delicious! I will have to cook it xoxo!
This is like watching Ratatouille😭🤎😍
*Amazing!! ♡ 😃 Nice! This is not just eating. This is art!!*
She is ADORABLE
My favorite videos from quang are his soul food videos.
I love your family so sweet, Food is fire of course!!
I'm from the deep south. Quang will need to hire a personal trainer for his beautiful wife if he plans on spoiling her with all of that soul food cooking.
I agree
quang used to be a fitness youtuber and was quite fit so he could just work out with her
Quang… my grandma would use not only collards, but mustard and a turnip greens , all three combined… collards are the toughest of three and take the longest to cook down, she also used smoked turkey necks for seasoning
*I pray that everyone who is watching this masterpiece becomes really happy and successful in life!*
Love your videos quang !! And your wife is so honest great to see you guys so happy 😊 😃
This was a beautiful video
We eat mustard greens too. ALOT of soul food will mix collards and mustard greens
Quang: Food and life is such a beautiful thing
Wife: Daan you thin??
LoL love them 😂
Love lemon pepper my guy
So we actually make mustard greens with turnip mixed so that was good, the only things u forgot was fried fish and cornbread. Btw my fam loves lemon pepper
Yesss! Fried catfish, cornbread and red beans and rice
U should cook with Vietnam items. That would be interesting
Hey cuz I'm from the DMV but the Maryland side the moco part I've been watching you for a min cuz. You definitely invited to the cookout homie.
You don't have to put vinegar and mustard greens only in collards it will make it very bitter and add a pinch of sugar
She has the best t shirts!
Yes indeed my boy you are invited to the cookout
Quang feeding his brother all the leftovers hahahah, love this guy!
Congrats brother for your wedding 😃👍👍
I never knew you was married Congratulations 😊
When are you going back home miss those cooking vids
You made her soul food! You trying to keep her keep her! Lol respect!
I love lemon pepper chicken and fish.
No right are wrong way to eat soul food also the seafood I wouldn’t consider it a soul food dish
That's 30 minutes away! I'll have to remember to try it sometime.
I’m with her I hate salmon and lemon pepper ugh! I’m not a fan of sweet potatoes but I love any kind of greens yumm I probably would’ve ate just the greens as well
yes you invited to the cook out and the wife
Heyyyy where’s the classic fried chicken and cornbread you usually do?
chill with the zooming
Cajun (the salmon and shrimp) isn't necessarily soul food, though. I knew she wouldn't like the mac & cheese as I never got the hype on it, either (too thick, rich, and cheesy, and I'm a major cheese lover). And yes, the sweet potato casserole is too sweet unless you're used to it. It's like eating dessert until you're used to eating it. I knew she'd like the greens as that's similar to eating canh chua (the one made with pork ribs and pickled mustard greens).
W Quang W Wife W brother in law
She has the funniest shirts
You need to put the background music that you had before.
Can never be too cheesy 😁
She's glowing! But don't be having her hate soul food because you ain't do it right especially with no cornbread 😭 but i understand yall have different ingredients so ima let you slide But don't Messing with her head until she tries the American version! Good video yall👍🏽
Looks good!! But put a can of coke in those greens they will be perfect!
Who wouldn't love it?? Lemme tell u something, anyone who doesn't love soul food, has no soul lol😎👍💙
Gotta take a trip down to the southern US man.....We'll get you right. Signed, Georgia.
Quang Everything is “SOUL FOOD “ What you are making is Southern Cuisine
ORDER 69 😂😂😂
Quang how can you do a soulfoodplate without the fried chicken?
You get the black approval
Lemon is take away the fishy taste of seafood is why they use it. Otherwise, if you don’t mind fishy taste of seafood, use other ingredients
The Vietnamese taste palette isn't similar enough to the Southern African American palette. It probably has nothing to do with Quang's cooking. Any Asian American or Asian countries that like more savory and sweet food like Korea, Japan, Thailand or Malaysia will love Soul Food. I'm Asian American born and raised and I don't know one Asian American person that doesn't like Soul Food. It's objectively one of the best cuisines in the world when done really well.
Sorry, I disagree. I'm Asian American and came here at a young age. To this day, I don't like Mac & Cheese and don't get the raves about it. Candied yams and sweet potatoes and such was way too sweet for me. But I've since gotten used to it, but I'd make mine less sweet than how it's traditionally made. SE Asia does sweet and savory, whereas Korea and Japan don't really do sweet in their foods. If you grew up in Asia and didn't eat Western foods until you were beyond the age of 20, many foods will not appeal to you. I knew right away she wouldn't like the Mac & Cheese and the sweet potato. But I also knew she'd like the greens because if made a certain way, it's very similar to a Vietnamese sour soup made with pickled mustard greens and pork ribs.
I just think the wife doesn’t like sourness xD
My goodness this looks delicious. I knew I shouldn't have watched this before I had eaten. Now I'm starving lol.
Lemon Pepper is fire!!
Congrats bro happy for u to find love and yes u are invited to the cookout but only to cook u gonna get in a fight with all that smackin u do lol 😆 jp but foreal tho 😳
I like lemon pepper or lemon pepper wings
are you planning to stay in Vietnam or will you return to Canada
Love cheesy macaroni and I love sweet sweet sweet candid yams. Don't I won't eat it. It all look delicious to me. You can throw some my way. Wish I could find a man to cook for me. Any kind of food 😋
Quang, you better pull the label off that pot before you cook it on!
Don't you think
yammie!
You guys are so cute. Yes you both can come to my cook out. My dishes are prepared differently though. I like our new wife. 😃😃👏🏽👏🏽🥰🥰
Does folding the cheese matter? I feel like you can just stir it, no?
Did quang move back to Vietnam? I thought he just bought a new place in Canada…
This one really annoyed me for some reason , and I usually love all your videos that come out , this one wasn’t for me my guy
Food looks good! Not trying to hate but I know your wife and her brother aren’t into some of the heavier western food lol. In Asia most of them eat light and fresh food lol.
I like it when u feed each other, it unlocks a secret fetish haha jokes lmao
I agree about the lemon..but not because it’s sour, it just ruins the taste for me😭
I hate lemon pepper. But love everything else.
What I did like was the honesty in this video. It seems no matter who cooks it's banging. But, your family keeping it real with you is refreshing. While you smacking and acting like it's wonderful.
As far as the meal. 🤔 I think the greens looked the best out of everything. The shrimp looked good. Everything else was not it. The wrong pasta for the Mac n cheese and too much hot sauce or none at all would've been good. I didn't expect the yams to change to that consistency... If so, sweet potato fluff would've been the best course. Salmon🤔 I've never had it as a soul food meal. But, I also don't like salmon so it's a miss×2 for me on that. But... Yeah... Lemon pepper seasoning I think only really works well on chicken and just a dash. Obay would've probably been better. Nice job tho. And y'all do make a very cute couple even the bro is cute.
Y do i enjoy u eating?? 😂😂
She a grown damn woman, he act like she a damn kid.
They don't like the best part of it 😄😄😄😄
Really love that she is 100% honest

Yes cut his work in half!
its the bro in law behind the camera!
i love how honest she is
What’s up Quang!! 😊the food looks delicious. You always enjoy your food. Makes me want to step up my cooking 🧑🍳 game 😂😂
The "don't you think" from your wife makes me so happy sometimes 😂 I don't even know why
I feel like this is because Quang is used to these foods so his palette is different to his wife’s who is used to traditional Vietnamese flavours. It would be the same for anyone not used to particular flavours and combinations - from a young age my parents introduced me to lots of different flavours and cuisines so now I appreciate all foods😋
Bro your wife being in this video is so wholesome. It’s makes me feel so North American in my tastes lmao.
Side note: of course y’all invited to the cookout, everyone has different tastes and everything ain’t for everybody. Especially how bold black cooking is. Everything is in your face, you just have to find what fits you. For me it’s the Mac n cheese and seafood... they’re tripping, I know that was bussing.
What is this "black cooking"? Mac and Cheese wasn't created by blacks. Frying or baking chicken and fish isn't "black cooking"? Eating Collards that was brought over from the Middle East and Asia isn't "black cooking". None of this is eaten in Africa and no blacks are eating African foods as part of the culture. All of these meaningless terms being used like "soul food, cookout, for the culture" just makes this "particular" group desperate for an identity.
@@spankbuda7466 Just say you’re a bigot and move on. It doesn’t have to be created there to be apart of a culture lmao. Also, we have an identity, we aren’t desperate for one. Moreover, we aren’t African by any means. We’re black Americans. Things that black people commonly cook is black cuisine. Please save us the racist tangent next time, none of your points are meaningful in the slightest. Culture is conducive to the customs of a group of people, it doesn’t have to originate from there lol. In that case American cuisine, and many other world cuisines, don’t exist as their foods don’t originate from the countries in question. I appreciate your comment tho, albeit bigoted and shortsighted to say the least.
@@spankbuda7466 You’ve also stated many hateful comments elsewhere on this video. You’re putting in a lot of footwork instead of being a good racist and keeping your negative comments to yourself. Be a good racist and scurry away. Thank you for your time.
@@dc6953 What are you not understanding? This "particular" group have went a step further to put a label on something that they eat a lot of like fried chicken and call it "soul food" just because a black person cooked it. But work at a non black KFC, Popeye's, etc. restaurant in their own "community".
Now there's some individual that created this dumb cliché about invites to a "cookout" i.e. BBQ at the forest preserve that they do not get a permit for or at somebody backyard. So no one have cookouts?
Why isn't this considered American culture? Because, this is what it is!
There's no other group who are saying or doing this foolishness.
@@dc6953 Why are you responding to a person that you want to "scurry away" in a PUBLIC comment section? You could simply ignored me.
You don't tell me what to say, when to say it, or how to say it. That's oppressive behavior. This response is the reason why this "particular" group are ALLOWED to get away with this foolishness because other cultures believes that it's a waste of time to argue with the uneducated when trying to educate. When you disagree it's automatically "racist" even though you don't know what race I am. This is sad.
I’ve never seen sweet potatoes that weren’t orange it’s kind of off putting but I’ve made your recipes so I know it’s delicious.
They r probably Japanese sweet potatoes they r actually way better than the orange!
I would think maybe bcus they grow them organically? Not sure.
Edit: oh ! He mentioned it in the vid lol he said organic
ruclips.net/video/CGzX8GyHNZY/видео.html
There's also purple sweet potatoes
There are many varieties of sweet potato.
The US mainly has the orange yams (turnipy) while Japan and Korea has the purple (very sweet, not savory).
I find the latter to be fine by itself, and not well paired with any other ingredients.
Does your wife prefer lighter/cleaner food? This food might be too heavy/strong seasoned for her. It would be cool to see you cook a lighter healthier meal for her!
vietnamese cuisine will 99% of the time contain vegetables and greens or be paired with vegetables and greens so its very much lighter. American food is very heavy on the fats. It took me a few years to get used to american food but now i cant live without it. might die sooner though hehe
@@thienpham1939 :(
i sorta notice the food he makes involves lots of too many spices, cream, cheese too much fat n maybe salt I can see y shes not fan of these flavor.
@@thienpham1939 Viet food is definitely fresher and lighter. There's a balance of sweet, salt, sour, etc., and most things come with a platter of fresh herbs or veggies. No other cuisine uses fresh platters of herbs like Viets do. However, I have to disagree with you on the heavy on fats. We eat fatty foods, we just eat it differently. For example, we'll eat pork belly all day because we love the fat in it. But really rich and fatty foods won't go over well with those whom grew up eating Vietnamese food and Mac & Cheese is the epitome of really rich, fatty, and heavy. The greens he made for her, I knew she'd like them because if made right, they are similar to Vietnamese canh chua made with pickled mustard greens and pork ribs (not the fish canh chua, which uses different veggies).
The wife has become my favorite!!!
Now Quang u know damn well that ain't no real soul food lol, compared to ur actual soul food meals u made. 🤦🏽♀️
