    Hi just watched another awesome video ! Wondered if you still like the soft sand rubber and using the Alexseal paint? Do we have to worry about temperatures when applying this outside on our decks ie dew? Could we tarp it at night to avoid standing moisture or do it when it’s warmer weather? When you were describing using the flattening agent and missed spots and uneven non skid particles I thought you were on our boat!! We have to sand it down as it gets dirty and so hard to clean and doesn’t look as good as when we first did it! We like the even look of the soft sand. Also going to redo our windows and do you still like the vhb tape with 795 Dow sealant for your window installations?? Thanks for all you do for making the boats beautiful again!

    question...getting ready to use the soft sand non skid on a hatch on my boat before I do the whole boat..... If I use enough hardneing catalyst per gel coat...do i have to use pva when i am rolling out a large amount to non skid? Plus if it a two coat process , how can the thin line tape cut through the gel coat after it hardens?////or do I pull the finish tape prior to complete hardening?
    Thanks

    Hi Andy, great vid. I need to redo the non-skid on the decks of my Aloha 32 as the current surface, while in good shape, is rather slippery (i.e., not a very aggressive non-skid). If my fiberglass deck gelcote is already textured for nonskid by the manufacturer (i.e., molded in), do I have to completely grind away all the non-skid to achieve a perfectly smooth surface, or can I apply it directly over the thoroughly cleaned surface?

  • @ThatOldMan2112
    @ThatOldMan2112 6 лет назад

    This looks like a great way to get non-skid. Can you scrub this? I'm rebuilding a small center console and want some kind of non-slip. But I get fish blood, chum, stepped on bait and general dirt all over the deck. So, I have to scrub it down every time I come in. Will this hold up?

    Hi Bud, I wanted your advise, I have gelcoat on my moody 336 sailboat, it hasn't been taken care of and it is full of small cracks from ageing in the sun, 25 years old and I don't think it has EVER been waxed. Just for the deck would you recommend trying to fill in all of these cracks (hairline, millions of them) or just paint over the gelcoat? if so what process should I follow for painting over the gelcoat?

    Hey Andy. I love the videos! How has the soft sand/awlgrip lasted over the years? Thinking about redoing the nonskid on my sailboat. In the past, sand or griptex was used by a previous owner and has failed. It is a real safety issue. Would the soft sand be your first choice over griptex?

    I just painted my Tayana -37 deck with Awlgrip and feel that it is to slick . I would like to add some non-skid to it like softsand . The question is the Tayana has a diamond pattern nonskid deck . Would the softsand fill up the diamond pattern . If I am worried about that should I use the fine size ?

  • @marshallbrodie110
    @marshallbrodie110 8 лет назад

    The Soft Sand is intriguing, however, I am concerned about long term durability. It seems that the "give" in the rubber particles could cause the Awlgrip topcoat to crack or delaminate? Just wondering what your thoughts are and if you have any feedback on durability yet?I am leaning towards the conventional system of Awlgrip and Griptex because I want something that will last 10-15 years on my 28' Intrepid center console. Your work and your videos are superb, keep up the good work!

    Very nice alternative!I have been torn over the years with my restoration. Always hated the idea of a silica in the event it had to be torn off. Plays havok on sandpaper stripping methods. (using sandpaper to remove sandpaper) I've also heard of salt and sugar, both of which are applied to topcoat that has kicked, then washed off to reveal a texture. Wasn't too convinced of those methods either. So, with the soft sand, what does it feel like? Sharp and cutting like a silica? Or more like rubber mat embedded in the deck?

    • @boatworkstoday
      @boatworkstoday 9 лет назад +1

      erynthegrey The more i'm working with it, the more I'm really liking this stuff. Even though it's rubber and has a forgiving feel, but it's not spongy. I'd consider it a medium / hard density rubber; by the time it's topcoated with a couple applications of paint it becomes solid without the hard sharp edges typically associated with a silica based grit. I guess best way to describe it would be to say that it has an aggressive appearance without an overly aggressive feel ;-) Give it a try on some sample pieces, I think you'll really like it! Make sure to check out the writeup on my website for more details!

    Geat video! What is the exact brand of AWL GRIP that you are using in your videos to do the non skid? Is it a topside paint or is it a gel coat? +Tclaw49 Awlgrip only makes paints (no gelcoats). They have 2 lines of paint; traditional Awlgrip and Awlcraft 2000. In this video I used Awlgrip, but for your project another product that may work better for it's application would be Kiwi Grip. Hope this helps!

    Two questions: We own / race our sailboat. Moving in and out of the cockpit underway has led to a few slips so I remembered your video and we are getting ready to use this product on our boat. +duane krohn Hi Duane! As far as traction the soft sand is very good. I think you'll really notice a difference ! As far as using it on the seats; I guess there are two things that come to mind... 1) What's more important, comfort or safety? 2) on a race boat, I didn't think anyone was sitting ;-) Crew are either grinders or rail meat, right :-O? Have you ever tried pumice? It’s cheap and works well. Hard to sand off if you had to, but I use One Shot sign paint oil paint and when the non-skid needs repainting, the shine has left the paint, so I just sand it with 120 to take off some paint and put two more coats of paint on. No additional non-skid is needed. I’ve repainted the deck three times in 25 years? I’m most concerned with how difficult it is to repaint because a beautiful paint job, no matter what paint used, won’t last as long as you’d like. I think that maybe the two part paint is easier to apply because it doesn’t dry quickly and you can paint more slowly, while oil has to be done quickly and to get a good job, you need some practice. Do you have any thoughts on that? My only two part experience was with Imron, about 45 years ago. Drop something on the deck and the paint popped off. It was extremely difficult to sand. How is the two part paint we have today to sand? There are two drawbacks to my oil paint-the shine doesn’t last long (though the color retention of One Shot is excellent) and in FL, where I live, the heat and humidity causes mildew with the oil paint because of the linseed oil in the paint and of the Penetrol added to it to aid in brushing.

    I'm not understanding whats going on . Is Awlgrip nonskid and soft sand rubber too different things ? Are you applying awlgrip like whats in the title ? Can you give me a link video that explains what Awlgrip is ? I have a old 1978 ranger boat and it has faded metal flake paint on the inside side walls . How would you apply the rubber sand on vertical walls ? Watch this video ruclips.net/video/H7CKqKnOAXQ/видео.html I don't know what paint he mixed with the soft sand but it seems like water gets around the rubber and causes mold and you have to bleach it to get it clean . Is this something that happens to all soft sand applications or do different paints you mix with it make a difference . What do you think he did wrong that would cause it to mold ? I don't know anything that bonds to rubber chemically so how does any type of paint keep water from getting around the rubber and keep it from mold ?
