I've watched over 1000 tennis tutorials on RUclips. Tom always gives the best and most helpful and uncompromising instructions hands down! Please enable the "Thanks" button so I can show my gratitude.
I am using an Eastern forehand grip and trying to make contact at the same point out in front; "protect the contact point!". I am pretty consistent with the forehand... I had never thought about closing the racquet face at the bottom of the backswing to guarantee vertical face at contact. Not sure if I am closing it; suspect I am on edge. But my contact is pretty consistent. The grip determines the contact point. I would think that protecting the contact point is the simplest way to guarantee vertical at contact...As for closing the face at the lowest part of the backswing this seems difficult. I do want to implement this tip, but it is difficult to be aware of what the racquet is doing behind me. Whereas protecting the contact point in front of me is much easier.
With the eastern forehand grip which you use... do this... THINK PALM DOWN at the lowest part of the backswing, just push your palm down slightly... how much you push down will be determined by the results of your shots... you'll have to adjust and fine tune as you see the need!

I need to record myself while hitting my forehand.
Can't wait to try it !
Give it a go!!! Just remember, if you're closing the face of the racquet and your shot is now going in the net... don't worry... you are not getting the racquet low enough... before swinging forward... must be a good foot below the contact point before swinging forward.

OMG Thank you !!!
Is a eastern best or Semi western grip better?
They are both good Fed used eastern Novak uses semi-western...
Nice video!! Do you just swing your shoulder at the time of contact or you swing racquet with forearm as well?
Both! The shoulder is the main part of the swing... however, by letting the racquet head lag slightly you can get some forearm and wrist snap into the shot for more power as well... but it takes more talent to do that consistently.

I use a continental grip on a 45 degree angle follow through to finish above the shoulder. It's the method I'm supposed to do on all shots. Always goes long on me. I can't make spin at all...told it's usually a bad thing to use. Can that be fixed?
Your problem lies in the grip... continental... not a good grip for hitting topspin, the racquet face is naturally OPEN at contact unless you put your wrist in a very awkward position... my suggestion is to slightly turn the grip more towards eastern and think, "PALM DOWN WITH THE HITTING HAND" at the low point of the backswing BEFORE you swing forward... this should insure a vertical racquet at contact moving from low to high.
To your tennis success,
Tom
@@Fundamentalsoftennis I'm still a beginner so continental grip is my starter grip until I learn control. Making a right swing path and follow through is all I can do for now. Spin is for when I've supposedly mastered to control flat strokes...if spin is deemed to be a good tactic then.
J Look No excuses. Change to eastern grip asap to get the basics right!
@@jackquinnes Actually its not my call in the lessons. The coach is guiding me in that.
They arent
Great!!! Keep it up... And if your forehands start to go long... come back to this video... LOL!
