another world. how beautiful and full of heart and trusting in the good of people. what a great voice. the arts have no champions in these days. every life should know this type of music.
She was simply a very great singer. All the finest conductors knew it as did the critics. It really didn't matter what her technical shortcomings were, she transcended them and mesmerized her audience.
The expression in her face, alone, is worth watching in this video excerpt but, as I just saw this for the first time last night on TCM, I am awestruck by the beauty and power of her voice. Amazing!
C.W,thank you for this true gem.I wrote a review on this gem on page 2- 10 months ago. L.L.was one of my all time favourite singers, as well as a fine person.
@dynamicstuff73 You are absolutely correct. No one today knows how to sing with spontaneity and brilliance anymore because the vocal teachers do not have any comprehension about the Art of Singing
Well said. The operatic stage of today is bereft of this kind of warmth and brilliance. Sad indeed, that most singers of today are only pale imitations of what was.
Couldn't agree with you more. If you want to see a good example of bad set/costumes and sumptuous singing, watch Tucker-Stevens-Merrill-Peters Rigoletto Quartett - it is a treat and everyone seems to really enjoy themselves and each other.
I have read the following negative remarks about Lehmann- Poor breath - short top and not stylistically in Italian aria. Her rcording of Visi d'Arte is tremendous emotionally. Regarding her other flaws- she must have been a magician because they seem dissapear> The quality of her voice with that sensual throb and her magnificent colume and rhythmic varities makes her IMO one ot the all time vocal artist,
A brilliant singer in the best tradition. There were few indeed any better than her on a given day.

Quel ambiance! D'autrefois... J'adore
Even in the Master Classes in the 1960's there was no wobble despite the loss of the high notes.

Even Walter Legge ordered Schwarzkopf to listen and learn from Lehmann's records.

Absolutely- today they try to ttick us with visual gimics. Lehman need only her glorius voice and dramatic singing.
