I haven’t used Interqual, but MCG seems pretty detailed! I was wondering if you have any tips on charting them? I feel like I am over charting and having to do so many reviews everyday, I wanna be able to use my time wisely! Hopefully the question makes sense! Thank you ❤

I'm starting a UM job with Optum who will train me for approximately 2months! I'm happy they are willing to train an unexperienced UM nurse such as myself. That said, I've over 20 years of experience in a variety of specialties. Best to you!
If UM uses MCG but say Medicaid uses Interqual and based on MCG doc admits to INPT and Medicaid denies claim as not meeting INPT status due to them using Interqual, how do you appeal such a decision?
Hi there you would have to convey the physicians judgement on medical necessity. That can be supported by the notes, asking the physician to explain in writing the medical necessity, or if your system has a physician advisor process getting that advisor to explain the medical necessity so you can put it in writing for appeal. I have used both in behavioral health UM. InterQual is very rigid so I’ll end up sending more cases for peer reviews than when I have used MCG.

Thanks for the video. As a UM nurse I prefer using MCG over InterQual. MCG is more detailed.

You’re so welcome! Unfortunately You have to wait to get hired they typically only train with hospitals who have purchased their guidelines…

There used to be a specific UR certification but that has gone away as far as I know. Most UR nurses now take the CCM.
