The Gaylords in the Back of the Yards came up after the Rebels gang of the 50s. Most of the Gaylords in that set, in 1966, came from Englewood. That was a rough set. They fought against the Saints, Blackstone Rangers, and the Black Disciples down in Ogden Park.
GLs had Shernan Park on lock, then the Latin Souls, then the LKs and Black P Stones took over in the 80s

When the Gaylords formed in the 50s 'gay' meant "happy" like Rico said, or it stood for "Great American Youth" (and many other phrases) like others have commented. GL's were definitely a ‘factor’, they were mostly all over the North/Northwest side (Uptown, Logan Square, Kilbourn Park, Hermosa), at their peak they had ~6k+ members. They started falling off quick in the late 80s-early 90s bc white flight took almost all the poor and working class white kids out of the city, and the ones that stayed either grew out of the life or didnt want to be in a gang with 'gay' in the name (for obvious reasons 😄)
