Not planning to start a photography business as it's more of a hobby/passion for me, but I do appreciate the large quantity of quality advice I find from professionals like you!

I understand the need for your sofa time. When I was writing and directing commercials, one of my coworkers brought an aquarium into the office. When I was writing copy and getting nowhere, I'd sit in front of it and watch the fish. After about 20-30 minutes there was usually an idea germinating and I would go and write my commercial. Some of my coworkers did the same thing with similar results.

I often wake up during the night and have to write it down. I love the expression "I dream my paintings and I paint my dreams" not sure who said that and there was the author who described how words would roll over the hills.

I have a full time job now, so my day is spent doing that until I get better and the craft and start getting money for my photography, that being said, my most creative moments as a software solutions designer or photography come while I am doing nothing, medium to long drives from point a to b, hitting the trail on my MTB, the challenge for me, since I am still busy either driving or riding, is to remember the exact idea, as I am not stopping to write it down, I am getting better at it though.
Good organization you have thanks for sharing.

Quality relaxing is vital to a healthy output ..... I often used the term Creative Rest to describe it - as even if an idea didn't materialise .... I worked out all the detail of a shoot - so when it came to the setup - it was already 95% done. Even now (retired) I sometimes get asked "What are you doing ? " and I reply "Nothing" - but that's EXACTLY what I'm doing .... to do the personal recharge and see what happens. It's amazing how much time you save when it's mostly already worked out.

Invaluable insight to real world workings. You are a treasure, Scott. You do know how much this big picture framework helps us - thank you so much for sharing your blueprints for time management and for promoting the idea to trust those you bring into your projects (non micro management). You show us by direct example, too, in how all of your vids are laser focused - to the point without confusing fluff.

I don’t keep a regular schedule, and because I shoot a lot of travel editorial, and I live in a highly touristed area, I go on shooting walkabouts and day trips a few times a month. The rest of the time I am editing, working on my website, putting together RUclips videos, and thinking.

Hearing the caritive voice from within requires quiet time so that the voice is not drowned out by the noise of this modern world. I hear mine loudest when I am active, like cycling, running, or working out. Additionally, hearing the creative design within can also be enhanced through moments of stillness and reflection.

On the topic of why you might get better ideas when training. Freud and Jung believed physical training is just like creative work , since both tap into your innate subconsious being. They believed that when a person's subconsious desires float to the consious, they transform into either sexual energy, creative energy or physical energy. Don't know if I explained it as well as my psychology teachers but it is true. Walking is my favourite way of getting ideas, it is absolutely proven that though processes go better when the body is active rather than inactive. Always love your videos , love from the Balkans

Great little video Scott. Also great that you had time to think creatively, some of us, however, our brains never shut down. Never had time to sit and rest unless it was on a plane flying somewhere different. Good organizational use of your time also. Before the Internet, we were all manic so to speak. Now we are all just over it and leave it to the NEW generations, lol. Keep up the incentives, cheers mate!

Exercise is a great way of letting your creative side come fore - I cycle and there's definitely something about doing something that doesn't allow you to fully think about stuff, I guess the pre-occupation of having to think about riding (even though it's second nature) to a level to not falling off is a good distraction from just trying to creatively think, then bingo ideas just pop in your head.

I'd love to see a video about how to give advice to beginners. I was asked to give someone feedback and I was honest with them and their response was 'that was how I intended it to be'. I felt like anything else that I could say would start to upset them.

Another great video Scott, I have a question why do you have a screen/shield around your monitor, please? I have seen a few people with these. As for how I spent my time, on Saturday I covered 11.6 miles over 6 hours walking around Manchester doing street photography with my Canon 1300D with a mint condition vintage, 50 year old Helios 58mm 44-M lense that arrived the day before. 416 shots later and after getting them off my SD card, I spent a further 4 hours outside my apartment on Sunday practising with that said lens. The pictures looked good on the back of the screen however, it has some funny focusing characteristics the pictures were either fantastic or too soft and slightly out of focus. I not going to let that happen again but some of the street portraits I took look amazing.

This was one of the most useful videos you've done. I really appreciate the chart. Two questions; Some of the colors seem, on video, to be the same. Could you give a breakdown of the colors/percentages? My other question may seem silly, but how many hours are there in your work day? Thanks so much

Quiet time is necessary… the brain literally needs to reset. Thinking harder only overloads the parts of the brain that create… the hippocampus and amygdala. (Read that in a psych text book) … kinda like your best ideas come to you while you’re showering 😉
