Thank you for posting, great to see our lovely Kilkenny in Black & White in this period of time, such style, i wish the old style shopfronts were still present, Kilkenny has such unique beauty.
Over 50 years later and cars still drive through the main artery of Ireland's best medieval city. The two busiest streets in Ireland are pedestrianised, Grafton and Henry Streets. Kilkenny has always been backward thinking, it has some great festivals and world-class buildings, but its businesses and council have always been stuck so far in the past that they seem like they are from the era when Kilkenny was first built.
The hotel was only built in the late 1990s. At the time this video was made the County Council office building was still KIlkenny College and they owned the land across the back of all the premises on John Street and along the river bank down to Maudlin Street. The empty space did include tennis courts and playing fields for the students. There was a lovely mini-wood of mature chestnuts and it allowed access to the river for fishing for the rest of us (and a way into steal the apples from the trees in the gardens). The view as it was back towards the bridge can be seen in the first few images of this video. ruclips.net/video/hy-L502Y7II/видео.html
it is very messy, too many cars & trucks parked everywhere, alot of teens/anti social behaviour hanging around which is immitating especially with their hoods up & vapeing, spitting etc, if i was a tourist id rather stay out of the town centre as much as i can or try walk through high st when all teens are in school as its quiter around
@@alrockman9817 agreed...and the lack of visible garda on the street is shameful 'considering we have a large force within 5min of the centre...indeed times are changing fast for our medieval city...and not for the better...in saying that I'm far from giving up on kilkenny...
@@captur69 the odd time theres a cop standing outside post office but that it, they could do with one standing at end of ormonde st out the Hibernian Hotel catching the huge number of drivers going the wrong way down the one way street, ive reported it so many times and noting has been done, but deffo the cops should be present at all over town on bikes, foot , we see what goes on everyday but the tourist only sees it for a few hours or so, supermacs is a huge eyesore where it is because of the big teen attraction it brings and thats where the anti social thugs gather, its the same with the multi storey car park they all hang out in there smoking weed , its out of control, high st should be nice to walk through but it isnt

It is interesting to see how Kilkenny looked in 1971

There is no River Court hotel as far as I can see at 4:39, just an empty space with some trees
