- The Gritstone Trail is a ridge hike of 35 miles exploring the eastern section of the county of Cheshire, close to the Peak District. We explore a beautiful landscape with historic sites mainly located on hill summits with fantastic panoramic views overlooking the plains of Cheshire and the hills of the Peak District.
The distance involved and the terrain make this a great weekend adventure. The signage is exceptional and therefore, this can be a great trail for your start into hiking navigation or as a refresh to shake off the winter blues.
A significant advantage of this trail is the start and finish being centred on railway stations. Disley station is advertised as the start which is located south of Manchester. The adventure finishes at Kidsgrove station which is actually in Staffordshire and close to Stoke-on-Trent.
Leaving Disley station we head to Lyme Park which is a 16th century Manor House and in fact the largest house in Cheshire. We pass through the Deer Park and onto the moors. We keep to the high ground and on the outskirts of Bollington we ascend the nearby hill to visit the follow of White Nancy. This was built in 1815 as a summerhouse but now serves as a white beacon which the community of Bollington regularly paint white so that it can be seen from miles away.
Next stop is the quarry of Tegg's Noise which has it's own country park with a number of preserved cutting machinery. Continuing our theme of heading for the high ground we aim for the telecom tower on Sutton Common. With this objective achieved we head for a nearby woods so we can wild camp for the night.
The following morning we visit Timbersbook which is usually completed at the end of the second day. Next we visit another abandoned quarry which has a standing rock referred to the Old Man of Mow, apparently you can see a face on this stone, but I struggled with that concept. Further along, on higher ground we discover the castle Mow Cop. From this folly we can see six counties across the vast panoramic view.
Our journey finally end with a walk along Macclesfield Canal before we complete the walk finishing at Kidsgrove railway station.
