Don't know that Dorothy had a Steve Allen or Fred Allen or Tony Randall (a scholar in a number of fields) or Paul Winchell (a brilliant inventor) or Arlene Francis or Martin Gabel or Bennett Cert beat on IQ or in depth and breadth of education. BUT, and this is a biggie, she was intelligent and shrewd and a fine crime journalist, writer who learned the ropes on her own thus her questioning was that of someone who's very livelihood depended upon her getting to the truth before the cops or the other reporters did. I sincerely hope that brilliance is not what killed her. We'll never know what she knew.

George Montgomery was good sport , his show had been canceled ,but the attention was on Ms. Shore and her show . At the end He and Dally looked forgotten while Kilgallen and Shore talked about the details of the dress worn earlier by Ms. Shore . I have to admire Montgomery for was with Ms. Shore at her death bed although they had long divorced and she had married and divorced another man . This after her involvement with Reynolds .
This is the second week they mentioned Moss Hart's autobiography, "Act One." Hart was a brilliant playwright and director, and later the husband of Kitty Carlisle Hart. His book is wonderful: warm, loving, honest (in admitting many of his own mistakes) and with one of the happiest, most joyful endings. Cerf said they had to pull the first print draft, because the editor in charge was so fascinated by the story that many mistakes were overlooked.
Getting paid $750 to sit on the panel for one night a week for one hour was delicious money in 1959. One could rent a 2 bedroom apartment in Manhattan for $150/month at the time. In fact, in 2019 it's still delicious money, but went much further back then.

Quick! Get me a time machine to my old hometown of NYC in October 1959 with me as an adult and working a blue collar job with the subway, bus, the 3 electric bus lines in Brooklyn all at the cost of 15 cents per ride and 1 dollar bought you a great big pizza pie! I also want to get my late uncle combination record player TV set for my living room. But at that time I was only a 3year old boy.
In 1988 a mugger ripped it from her neck leaving her with a broken collar bone and scratches and bruises. She wore it for 40 years. After she said “Martin is gone and now it is gone too”!!! TERRIBLY SAD

George Montgomery was the most well- equipped, talented, charming, and drop- dead handsome mati- nee idol type to never achieve super star status. (When God was handing out the large, masculine hands, HE certainly didn't overlook George Montgomery!)
I believe you, cuz the way George looks in the clip that shows what choices to watch is exactly what made me choose this one, though I admire Dinah and I love WML shows that I recently discovered as a pleasantly from the past, and am becoming addicted to! But, I had never heard of George Montgomery until today! Wow, just watching this clip of him makes me think that we all missed out! I conclude that it must actually have been Dinah who was the genius to marry a guy like George!!! :)
Was there another hurricane hunter contestant? I thought I had left a comment a few years ago. Anyway, a big "bravo" to the pilots who risked their lives in order to track these storms so that the public on land could be better prepared. Before weather satellites, they had to do it the hard way. And this is not ancient history, at least to me; I was a young boy when this aired originally.
I believe there was. The panel spent quite a long time trying to figure out what kind of plane he flew once they were told he didn't fly jets. These days we're accustomed to satellites, and getting a somewhat accurate forecast a day or two ahead of time. But in those days it required people flying into bad weather to predict when hurricanes or blizzards were about to overwhelm communities. Many people owe those men a huge debt. Too many occupations were repeated over and over, and sometimes the panel figured out the answer simply because they had seen that occupation three or four times.
I never knew about Dorothy until Years after her death so sorry that she was killed she was so beautiful and smart , love the way she greeted the people on the show and the questions she asked
I absolutley adored Dinah as a kid and early teenager. No woman since her has had the class she portrayed on the air. Now, as an adult, I can see why I liked her so much then. I like her now too. I only hope she was as nice in person as she was on the air. Unfortunately, too many stars are not.
From anything I have heard about her, she was a very good person. When I was a teenager, I liked her, too...still do, albeit posthumously. She had a very warm, gregarious personality. A far cry from current Hollywood.
Burt Reynolds told her, while a quest on her later show, that whenever he needed to exhibit some, Class, Manners and Style, he would reach into his "Dinah Bag". A shame that the public turned on that relationship, because they really had feelings for each other.
But a brilliant political and societal satirist and comedian. My older brother and sister and my parents considered him scholarly with a biting wit. I was much younger and hooked on radio adventures, comics and baseball.

Katie Hoffman Dorothy Kilgallen was a woman of extreme intelligence, and intuition as well. Pity she didn't unfold her brightness in more valuable fields. She was great at investigations concerning certain political scandals, and there has been a lot of speculations around her death. She had a lot of enemies because of her writings. An high IQ doesn't guarantee a high level of wisdom. The latter has in the long run been proven as the most important matter in life.
Just for the record Lee Israel was a noted author who was later discovered to be a literary forger, thief and eventually a convicted felon. Whatever she reported about Dorothy Kilgallen was done to sensationalize her book and should NOT be taken as the truth. I agree with SuperWinterborn "a high IQ doesn't guarantee a high level of wisdom." I think we can all agree Kilgallen was a good game player.
Dinah Shore -- a talent worth its weight in platinum. She hosted one of the best variety shows -- ever. As alluded to in this clip, it was one of the first NBC variety shows to broadcast regularly in color. It is a shame WML and CBS did not go to color earlier.

I remember Montgomery belittling her on her show and I didn't like that, but after the commercial he apologized . So I didn't hate him as much. He thought he was at home apparently ?
One time Montgomery was on Dinah's talk show and he was correcting her like she was stupid he was almost angry with her (They had been Divorced ) I thought what the hell's wrong with him ? So after the commercial he redeemed him self by apologizing to the audience. I thought good for him, he learned his lesson.

The August 23, 1959 show has Van Heflin as the other male guest (in addition to Bennett) and I can only find a 4 minute/54 second clip of the first guest, Louis Morisette, host of the Canadian WML. If Mort is on another show (besides Dinah Shore MG/October 4, 1959) it is hiding somewhere other than You Tube.
Mort Sahl is the comedian who asked the question about Richard Nixon; "Would you buy a used car from this man?" It was perfect because NO, no one would buy a used anything from Nixon.
The book Act One that Dinah mentions - if you want to fall in love with writing a Broadway play - or if you are interested in how something gets staged - it's brilliant. I read it every time I produce a new play written by me - 11 so far.
Mort Sahl was married to a Chinese woman who was the first Chinese to be in a Playboy magazine. Yes! I am a baby boomer! She was literally a work of art. There was such a thing as nudity with class in those days. 1946 til 1964 The boomer generation was born at that time.
At 11:18 the 2nd contestant Mrs. Mann takes a sip of water . This is the first time i have seen this on WML . I wonder if they had water just in case and if someone changed glasses off camera in between contestants ?
At the end of the show, Bennett asks how can a team score only one run on twelve hits. He was talking about Game 3 of the World Series and the exercise in futility by the Chicago White Sox in that game. They outhit the Dodgers 12 to 5 that day, but lost 3-1. (Earlier, it was mentioned that the Dodgers might need money belts the way things were going. They took the lead in the Series with the win this day.) The White Sox were not known for their offense. But they also were not known for squandering opportunities. They played small ball before the term was introduced. They were known as the "Go Go Sox". Led by Luis Aparicio who stole over 50 bases for the first time in his career (it was his fourth season, and he led the American League in steals in each of his first 9 seasons), they had dethroned the Yankees that year and had the best record in baseball during the regular season. But led by Ted Kluszewski in Game 1, the White Sox had flexed their muscles with an 11-0 victory and had been leading in Game 2 until Dodger bats woke up and eked out a 5-4 win. Now they were seeing the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum's lopsided baseball configuration for the first time, with left field's forty foot high screen only a hair over 250 feet away down the line. It was the first World Series game played on the West Coast and the first of only three (all in 1959) played before over 90,000 fans. Perhaps the Sox were affected adversely by all this. They were facing a tall, sidearming right-hander and future Hall of Fame member, Don Drysdale. He was only 23 years old but was already the ace of the staff, leading the team with 17 wins. He didn't start until Game 3 because of the tight NL pennant race and the two game playoff the Dodgers needed to win against the Braves. But it worked out well because he was especially tough on the right-hand batters who would be aiming at the left field fence. In addition to 12 hits (all singles), four Chicago batters walked and one was hit by a pitch. But Al Smith would hit into two double plays and three Sox base runners were gunned down on steal attempts. In the first inning, they loaded the bases with one out, but Sherm Lollar fouled out to third and Billy Goodman grounded out to first. In the second inning, Jim Rivera walked but was caught stealing. Then after the opposing pitcher, Dick Donovan, singled and Aparicio walked, Nellie Fox grounded out to end the inning. In the third, the Sox had back to back singles with two out, but Smith struck out. In the fourth inning, Aparicio was thrown out stealing and in the fifth Johnny Roseboro made Fox pay for his attempted larceny. In the sixth, Smith snuffed out a base runner with the first of his two double plays. In the seventh, the Sox again had two singles after two were out, but Jim Landis struck out and stranded them. Meanwhile Donovan was cruising along, having allowed only one base runner and faced the minimum 18 batters through 6 innings. (Gil Hodges had singled in the second, but was erased when Don Demeter grounded into a DP.) A journeyman until finding a home in the Sox starting rotation in 1955, Donovan struggled with injuries in the early going in 1959 and was only 9-10 during the regular season, his worst for Chicago. But he had the Dodgers eating out of his hand until one out in the seventh when Charlie Neal singled. After Wally Moon moved him to second with a ground ball to the right side of the infield, Donovan inexplicably lost his control, walking Norm Larker and Hodges. Al Lopez brought in Gerry Staley in relief and Walt Alston countered by sending up veteran Carl Furillo to bat for Demeter. It was a familiar match up as Staley had pitched in the National League from 1947-55, seven of those years as a starter, and Furillo was a mainstay of the Dodger lineup all those years. Staley was a sinker ball pitcher and he induced a ground ball from Furillo, but it found its way into center field and the Dodgers led 2-0. (Ironically Donovan relieved in Game 5 in the identical situation and got Furillo to pop out to preserve a 1-0 Sox win. But the Dodgers would win the Series in Game 6.) The Sox loaded the bases again in the eighth. Kluszewski and Lollar started the inning with singles and drove Drysdale for cover. Alston brought in his hot hand, rookie Larry Sherry, but he hit Goodman to fill the sacks. Chicago finally scored when Smith hit into his second DP, but Rivera's pop up to Roseboro stranded the tying run at third. The Dodgers got the run back in their half of the inning when Maury Wills led off with a single, moved to second on Sherry's bunt and scored on Neal's double. Sherry then struck out the side in the top of the ninth around Fox's single for the Sox' 12th and final hit. And that's how you score only one run on 12 hits, 4 walks and an HBP.

@@richatlarge462 I co-authored a book on sports many years ago, brought into the project when the other author found himself running way behind schedule. But I wrote it under a very different name, so it would be almost impossible to prove it was by me. I write all of my comments myself, some totally from memory, some mostly memory but verified to make sure I avoid any Mandela effect, and some additional facts I find along the way because I know what to look for and where to look. It also helps that I am going on 68 years old, devoured sports books (especially baseball) as a child, have a very good memory and can remember facts from the 50's, 60's and 70's (and some from the early 80's and from before I was born), better than I can stuff from the last 30 years. When I had to start working for a living self-employed in the financial services field, I no longer had the time to devote to keeping track of all this information than I had as a child or young adult. (Plus there are many more teams now in all sports, with players coming from many different countries.)
George Montgomery was a very multi-talented fellow. Actor, painter, director, producer, writer, sculptor, furniture craftsman, and stuntman. He & Shore were divorced just 4 years after this show. Mort Sahl couldn't decide if he was there to help the panel discover the contestant's "line" or to provide entertainment. He failed on both counts. Another comedian who was either a bore, an adolescent showoff or totally unfunny without a script.

I know I find the episodes without "celebrities" on the panel far more entertaining and interesting than those where they have imported a film or TV star to 'fill-in' for a missing regular, or perhaps simply to add some 'star-glitter' to the panel. I will make an exception for Tony Randall; he was OK. Groucho Marx, Jerry Lewis, Victor Borge, Ernie Kovacs & most others were complete bores; entirely juvenile without a script written for them.

It did. Broadcast live from NBC's Color City at the Burbank Studios. But for the beginning of the 1959-1960 season, Dinah and crew came to New York City for the first two shows.
Yes. Color videotape was used in Burbank starting late 1958. Even though this show was broadcast from New York, it was in color also. The whole show is up on RUclips taken from a B&W kinescope but there's also a clip with Dinah and her special guest Groucho Marx in color which can be found here ruclips.net/video/ysSY1UJgKqE/видео.html JLTV.tv was broadcasting about 25 of the unseen since their original broadcast color videotape shows including this one, which also featured Gwen Verdon and Ingemar Johanssen, but I can't find the full color show on RUclips.
The 1951-1963 series, first fifteen minutes long and then an hour, was also presented live and broadcast live through the 1960-1961 season, but saved on color videotape starting in late '58. In fact, there's a video clip dated from the November 9, 1958 episode which was broadcast for the first time in 1959. It's on RUclips here: ruclips.net/video/DUTKl_z9474/видео.html. Occasionally they would do something tricky on the live broadcasts but at the end, they would announce that portions of the show were taped earlier and inserted into the live broadcast. For the last two seasons which were monthly specials, were taped live, with as few stops as possible, but broadcast later.
After having watched all the episodes and seasons in chronological order multiple times, this is one of the years I got so weary of the bullying behavior to John Daly for a couple of seasons. Took away much of the enjoyment for me.

When Dinah passed, Burt Reynolds (who dated her) said “The world has lost an Angel” And he was right !!!
And the #1 female vocalist of the 40s. Great lady in so many ways.

Always liked George Montgomery, particularly in Westerns, when I was but a mere lad. As you allude, he never quite made the 'A' list.
I believe you, cuz the way George looks in the clip that shows what choices to watch is exactly what made me choose this one, though I admire Dinah and I love WML shows that I recently discovered as a pleasantly from the past, and am becoming addicted to! But, I had never heard of George Montgomery until today! Wow, just watching this clip of him makes me think that we all missed out! I conclude that it must actually have been Dinah who was the genius to marry a guy like George!!! :)
George Montgomery was a good man stood by and cared for his wife Dinah Shore during her serious illness. This l read somewhere.
Was there another hurricane hunter contestant? I thought I had left a comment a few years ago. Anyway, a big "bravo" to the pilots who risked their lives in order to track these storms so that the public on land could be better prepared. Before weather satellites, they had to do it the hard way. And this is not ancient history, at least to me; I was a young boy when this aired originally.
I believe there was. The panel spent quite a long time trying to figure out what kind of plane he flew once they were told he didn't fly jets.
These days we're accustomed to satellites, and getting a somewhat accurate forecast a day or two ahead of time. But in those days it required people flying into bad weather to predict when hurricanes or blizzards were about to overwhelm communities. Many people owe those men a huge debt.
Too many occupations were repeated over and over, and sometimes the panel figured out the answer simply because they had seen that occupation three or four times.
The previous hurricane hunter was Lt. Al Fowler, U.S. Navy, on the August 14, 1955 episode.
I never knew about Dorothy until Years after her death so sorry that she was killed she was so beautiful and smart , love the way she greeted the people on the show and the questions she asked
I absolutley adored Dinah as a kid and early teenager. No woman since her has had the class she portrayed on the air. Now, as an adult, I can see why I liked her so much then. I like her now too. I only hope she was as nice in person as she was on the air. Unfortunately, too many stars are not.

When I was a teenager, I liked her, too...still do, albeit posthumously. She had a very warm, gregarious personality. A far cry from current Hollywood.
Burt Reynolds told her, while a quest on her later show, that whenever he needed to exhibit some, Class, Manners and Style, he would reach into his "Dinah Bag". A shame that the public turned on that relationship, because they really had feelings for each other.

Katie Hoffman Dorothy Kilgallen was a woman of extreme intelligence, and intuition as well. Pity she didn't unfold her brightness in more valuable fields. She was great at investigations concerning certain political scandals, and there has been a lot of speculations around her death. She had a lot of enemies because of her writings. An high IQ doesn't guarantee a high level of wisdom. The latter has in the long run been proven as the most important matter in life.

Just for the record Lee Israel was a noted author who was later discovered to be a literary forger, thief and eventually a convicted felon. Whatever she reported about Dorothy Kilgallen was done to sensationalize her book and should NOT be taken as the truth. I agree with SuperWinterborn "a high IQ doesn't guarantee a high level of wisdom." I think we can all agree Kilgallen was a good game player.
My dad scored on his IQ test at genius level, but I think that socially, it has been more to his detriment, rather than an advantage.

Dinah Shore -- a talent worth its weight in platinum. She hosted one of the best variety shows -- ever. As alluded to in this clip, it was one of the first NBC variety shows to broadcast regularly in color. It is a shame WML and CBS did not go to color earlier.

One time Montgomery was on Dinah's talk show and he was correcting her like she was stupid he was almost angry with her (They had been Divorced ) I thought what the hell's wrong with him ? So after the commercial he redeemed him self by apologizing to the audience. I thought good for him, he learned his lesson.
Even though they were divorced for a long time I read George and their children were with Dinah when she passed.

The August 23, 1959 show has Van Heflin as the other male guest (in addition to Bennett) and I can only find a 4 minute/54 second clip of the first guest, Louis Morisette, host of the Canadian WML. If Mort is on another show (besides Dinah Shore MG/October 4, 1959) it is hiding somewhere other than You Tube.

The book Act One that Dinah mentions - if you want to fall in love with writing a Broadway play - or if you are interested in how something gets staged - it's brilliant. I read it every time I produce a new play written by me - 11 so far.

Hmm, I learned something, hurricanes haven't always been give male and female names.
At the end of the show, Bennett asks how can a team score only one run on twelve hits. He was talking about Game 3 of the World Series and the exercise in futility by the Chicago White Sox in that game. They outhit the Dodgers 12 to 5 that day, but lost 3-1. (Earlier, it was mentioned that the Dodgers might need money belts the way things were going. They took the lead in the Series with the win this day.)
The White Sox were not known for their offense. But they also were not known for squandering opportunities. They played small ball before the term was introduced. They were known as the "Go Go Sox". Led by Luis Aparicio who stole over 50 bases for the first time in his career (it was his fourth season, and he led the American League in steals in each of his first 9 seasons), they had dethroned the Yankees that year and had the best record in baseball during the regular season.
But led by Ted Kluszewski in Game 1, the White Sox had flexed their muscles with an 11-0 victory and had been leading in Game 2 until Dodger bats woke up and eked out a 5-4 win. Now they were seeing the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum's lopsided baseball configuration for the first time, with left field's forty foot high screen only a hair over 250 feet away down the line. It was the first World Series game played on the West Coast and the first of only three (all in 1959) played before over 90,000 fans. Perhaps the Sox were affected adversely by all this.
They were facing a tall, sidearming right-hander and future Hall of Fame member, Don Drysdale. He was only 23 years old but was already the ace of the staff, leading the team with 17 wins. He didn't start until Game 3 because of the tight NL pennant race and the two game playoff the Dodgers needed to win against the Braves. But it worked out well because he was especially tough on the right-hand batters who would be aiming at the left field fence.
In addition to 12 hits (all singles), four Chicago batters walked and one was hit by a pitch. But Al Smith would hit into two double plays and three Sox base runners were gunned down on steal attempts.
In the first inning, they loaded the bases with one out, but Sherm Lollar fouled out to third and Billy Goodman grounded out to first. In the second inning, Jim Rivera walked but was caught stealing. Then after the opposing pitcher, Dick Donovan, singled and Aparicio walked, Nellie Fox grounded out to end the inning. In the third, the Sox had back to back singles with two out, but Smith struck out.
In the fourth inning, Aparicio was thrown out stealing and in the fifth Johnny Roseboro made Fox pay for his attempted larceny. In the sixth, Smith snuffed out a base runner with the first of his two double plays. In the seventh, the Sox again had two singles after two were out, but Jim Landis struck out and stranded them.
Meanwhile Donovan was cruising along, having allowed only one base runner and faced the minimum 18 batters through 6 innings. (Gil Hodges had singled in the second, but was erased when Don Demeter grounded into a DP.) A journeyman until finding a home in the Sox starting rotation in 1955, Donovan struggled with injuries in the early going in 1959 and was only 9-10 during the regular season, his worst for Chicago. But he had the Dodgers eating out of his hand until one out in the seventh when Charlie Neal singled. After Wally Moon moved him to second with a ground ball to the right side of the infield, Donovan inexplicably lost his control, walking Norm Larker and Hodges. Al Lopez brought in Gerry Staley in relief and Walt Alston countered by sending up veteran Carl Furillo to bat for Demeter. It was a familiar match up as Staley had pitched in the National League from 1947-55, seven of those years as a starter, and Furillo was a mainstay of the Dodger lineup all those years. Staley was a sinker ball pitcher and he induced a ground ball from Furillo, but it found its way into center field and the Dodgers led 2-0. (Ironically Donovan relieved in Game 5 in the identical situation and got Furillo to pop out to preserve a 1-0 Sox win. But the Dodgers would win the Series in Game 6.)
The Sox loaded the bases again in the eighth. Kluszewski and Lollar started the inning with singles and drove Drysdale for cover. Alston brought in his hot hand, rookie Larry Sherry, but he hit Goodman to fill the sacks. Chicago finally scored when Smith hit into his second DP, but Rivera's pop up to Roseboro stranded the tying run at third.
The Dodgers got the run back in their half of the inning when Maury Wills led off with a single, moved to second on Sherry's bunt and scored on Neal's double. Sherry then struck out the side in the top of the ninth around Fox's single for the Sox' 12th and final hit.
And that's how you score only one run on 12 hits, 4 walks and an HBP.
I sit here in complete awe of what you have written. Do you write all your sports informational comments yourself, and if so, have you ever considered writing a sports book? Or, in fact, HAVE you written a book?
@@richatlarge462 I co-authored a book on sports many years ago, brought into the project when the other author found himself running way behind schedule. But I wrote it under a very different name, so it would be almost impossible to prove it was by me.
I write all of my comments myself, some totally from memory, some mostly memory but verified to make sure I avoid any Mandela effect, and some additional facts I find along the way because I know what to look for and where to look.
It also helps that I am going on 68 years old, devoured sports books (especially baseball) as a child, have a very good memory and can remember facts from the 50's, 60's and 70's (and some from the early 80's and from before I was born), better than I can stuff from the last 30 years. When I had to start working for a living self-employed in the financial services field, I no longer had the time to devote to keeping track of all this information than I had as a child or young adult. (Plus there are many more teams now in all sports, with players coming from many different countries.)

George Montgomery was a very multi-talented fellow. Actor, painter, director, producer, writer, sculptor, furniture craftsman, and stuntman. He & Shore were divorced just 4 years after this show.
Mort Sahl couldn't decide if he was there to help the panel discover the contestant's "line" or to provide entertainment. He failed on both counts. Another comedian who was either a bore, an adolescent showoff or totally unfunny without a script.

I know I find the episodes without "celebrities" on the panel far more entertaining and interesting than those where they have imported a film or TV star to 'fill-in' for a missing regular, or perhaps simply to add some 'star-glitter' to the panel. I will make an exception for Tony Randall; he was OK. Groucho Marx, Jerry Lewis, Victor Borge, Ernie Kovacs & most others were complete bores; entirely juvenile without a script written for them.

It did. Broadcast live from NBC's Color City at the Burbank Studios. But for the beginning of the 1959-1960 season, Dinah and crew came to New York City for the first two shows.

Yes. Color videotape was used in Burbank starting late 1958. Even though this show was broadcast from New York, it was in color also. The whole show is up on RUclips taken from a B&W kinescope but there's also a clip with Dinah and her special guest Groucho Marx in color which can be found here ruclips.net/video/ysSY1UJgKqE/видео.html JLTV.tv was broadcasting about 25 of the unseen since their original broadcast color videotape shows including this one, which also featured Gwen Verdon and Ingemar Johanssen, but I can't find the full color show on RUclips.
One more question :) Was Dinah's hour long show live at some point and then went to tape?
The 1951-1963 series, first fifteen minutes long and then an hour, was also presented live and broadcast live through the 1960-1961 season, but saved on color videotape starting in late '58. In fact, there's a video clip dated from the November 9, 1958 episode which was broadcast for the first time in 1959. It's on RUclips here: ruclips.net/video/DUTKl_z9474/видео.html. Occasionally they would do something tricky on the live broadcasts but at the end, they would announce that portions of the show were taped earlier and inserted into the live broadcast. For the last two seasons which were monthly specials, were taped live, with as few stops as possible, but broadcast later.
