The reason why it says 2001 on the box is because that is when Hornby started producing the Gullane branded boxes for its Thomas range. Oliver was first issued in 2004 which was the final year Hornby would use the Gullane style boxes before they were replaced by the HiT branded boxes in 2005. At 3:25, you can see the date the servicing sheet was printed in the top-right corner, next to the catalogue number, 4/1/04. This would be 4th of January as these were printed in Margate, Kent for the UK market.
