Those are Torment Shards. Keep playing and you'll unlock the Scriptorium, where you can spend them for small character upgrades. Each shard doesn't give much, but you can keep stacking them and it adds up.
That's true, the game ramps up difficulty. Best things to do are go back and farm items and clear out easy quests for the exp boosts and unlocks. Two of the best builds are crit chance/damage Archer and block strength + defense Shield Maiden. Those two characters have gotten me through some tough runs. If you have the Thornfist Gloves, definitely try those with the Shield Maiden. Don't give up and good luck!
