I don't think ADHD can be caused by trauma. Rather C-PTSD, particularly from childhood trauma, can cause symptoms similiar to ADHD, much like schizotypal personality disorder has a lot of symptom overlap with ASD, but with a completely different cause.

I've recently received my formal autism diagnosis after being pushed in the right direction by one of your videos about 2-3 years ago. Trying to figure out if I got ADHD on top of it, as some experiences seem very familiar to me but others do not and generally people who are 'just' ADHD have a very different vibe than me, albeit a strangely compatible one. Very interesting talk!

Watching this through a second time and picking up on so much more (I was processing a lot the first time so struggled to keep up) - sooo many helpful things, thankyou for having this discussion, and for answering my question!

I will make plans in advance, but then the night before or the day of I'm often wracked by doubts. "I dunno...maybe it's not such a good idea after all?" Sometimes I can push through it and when I do I rarely, if ever, regret sticking to the plan. It's very frustrating and kind of unsettling because it makes to hard to know when to trust myself and my doubts. When is that nagging uncertainty just analysis paralysis to be ignored and when is it genuine gut instinct to be heeded?

I appreciate what Marc said about intrinsic motivation at around the 15 min mark and the shame of not being able to do it without support.
As I have both, I CAN make myself do something, but unlike Paul, it's not "just" a decision, but a very effortful one and I have to rest up afterwards in many ways. On the other side, my impulsive side has learned that there has to be some give and take, and the part of me that craves order and peace has to be given them whenever possible (note - it's not always possible. Life is complicated). I try to structure my life to get some sort of outside support, but I SO HATE to be prompted that I usually find ways to get it in the most indirect ways, to make the complicated system that is my brain actually get some good out of it!! But back to what Marc said - yes, I am also working on dealing with the shame of my various "inabilities" or difficulties, and finding ways to re-integrate that part of myself (the shaming part) in a healthier way. One step at a time...

Was hoping to get some answers but sadly I don't feel I have much more clarity. I could sometimes relate to the ADHD perspective of things but then my PDA kicks in and I can't anymore. I really relate to struggling with intrinsic motivation, but I couldn't have someone help me via nudging because of shame, but because it feels like a demand. Even listening to how the people in the talk described their methods on how to solve the issues felt like a demand.

    I've been diagnosed with "Asperger's"
Just as I was learning what that meant, someone decided in all their knowledge of my dislike for change...
    Now I'm "On the spectrum"?
Whatever I tend to hyper focus. Like, not ADHD what-so-ever.
    My partner has ADHD.
I'd like to see a different perspective. ❤

Hi Guys. Is hyperfocus also a part of Autism?

I think it’s one of those things we’re still trying to figure out. I have sometimes seen it listed under autism and sometimes seen it listed under ADHD and sometimes listed under both. I think maybe the intensity of it varies and I’ve heard some people call it hyperfocus versus hyper fixation indicating that the hyper fixation in ADHD is more intense.🤷‍♀️
