I had a mini 10 gallon saltwater aquarium and didnt know I had a 2 foot long bobbit worm until I was walking past it in the middle of the night and saw it 90 percent extended out of its burrow out of the corner of my eye. It literally made my heart skip a beat. Somehow it hadnt gotten ahold of my fire goby yet. Next morning I pulled the rock out and put it in a bucket and dumped club soda on it. Caused the worm to immediately leave the hole. Returned rock. Put worm in a bag and put it in freezer.

@GeneralAeon it's probably being saved for use as fishing bait - i hear that a relative, the australian beach worms(which are mostly harmless detritivores about the same size that live inside essentially every australian beach in the thousands. yes, they're mostly harmless - not necessarily ENTIRELY harmless, though, they might nip you; but eurgh! gives me the willies. they're longer than me! and i'm taller than most australians) are frequently pulled up out of their burrows for use as fishing bait. sure, bobbit worms are venomous and terrifying predators, but venoms can't survive stomach acid. probably mostly the same to a fish when dead and on the end of a line

There are OTHER kinds of worms on land, too. Also very terrifying ones. Including many parasites that will eat the victim from the inside out, and also the Megascolides australis, which is a type of earth worm that can grow up to 9 feet long.

    • @colloyi6597

there are also leeches which are basically just worms too. Kinabalu giant red leech and giant horse leeches that swallow frogs whole. and obviosuly the flatworms (hammerhead worms). they are smaller but they can swallow giant earth worms 10 times their size and have toxic slime around them + regeneration.

12:30 how did we even figured that out?😭😭

  • @felinamegan6352

Ok I do feel the need to point out that yes, while all worms discussed are part of the Annelida (a phylum), they are still in different orders, not even in the same classes.. Bobbit worms for example are class Polychaeta, order Eunicida, while a terrestrial worm like Lumbricus terrestris for example is class Clitellata, order Oligochaeta. So saying they're all just worms and the only difference is their habitat is kinda undermining the fact that they evolved completely differently. For context, this would be similar to saying humans (order Primates, class Mammalia) would be the same as lancelets or sea squirts, just because we are in the same pyhlum (Chordata). I'm not saying you're wrong, just putting it into perspective a little.
Anyway, great video! I remember dissecting worms in my bachelor's like it was yesterday🙃

how are annelids super different from each other though? a tunicate and a human being have compeltely different morphology, feeding habits, teeth shape etc. annelids are usually just annelids. worm body shape. eat using pharynx. if there was a small monkey like annelid then you would have a point.

8:38 specifically the longest bootlace worm = 55 meters (uncommon), long dino = 35 meters long (still longer than most/common bootlace worm), meaning some bootlace worm is longer than dino, but not all bootlace worm are longer than dino.

Because the diversity of life is among the most beautiful things in existence, even if it can also be gross at the same time
