  • This is the first video I have uploaded in 4K Ultra High Definition. So I figured I would test drive it showing my new 7300 and make a contact on 10 meters.
More videos on the way, and a LOT more hard drive space needed now.

So much has been written about the 7300, there is nothing I can add, other than to say I have had mine coming up on 2 yrs this December.
I am unable to come up with any negatives on this rig, especially when one considers price. When the 7300 was introduced, the words "game changer" were used. This has become so true.
I currently use mine quite heavily on 6m FT8 Es and meteor scatter; it never skips a beat, puts out full power with no hickups, the SSB contacts receive unsolicited praise in received audio using the hand mic!
There have been some negative reports concerning the 7300's adjacent freq rejection issues. These are unfounded and usually posted by people who do not either know how to use a full DSP direct sampling front end receiver and have not done enough research concerning how to use this rig to it's fullest capability. It is different and takes time to understand it.
Congrats on your new rig and 4K camera; I know you will truly enjoy both!

Ha! I was thinking the same thing. Its an odd habit in this case. Is the goal a clear screen for viewing? Cuz the plastic gets in the way. I've always been an "honest wear" kind of guy. If you scratch it, you earned that scratch. (Same with my guns, all regular shooters - wear is just more personality.)

What a sweet radio! I too was influenced by your videos of the IC-7300 and now have a mint condition, pre-owned IC-7300 on the way to my front door. I could never abandon Yaesu, Icom or Kenwood, one for the other, as I have owned rigs by all three and have favorites of each brand. But I have been running Yaesu FT-897D's for years and decided it was time to move up to a more modern rig, still keeping it small and compact. The IC-7300 looks like a winner and will likely be on my shack desk for years to come. Thanks for all your informative, helpful videos Eric!

I had my license back in the '60. Life got in the way and I let it expire. My call sign was K3MSX. I am now going for my Extra ticket. Looking around, I seem to be drawn to the 7300. It seems to have all that I would like in a rig.
I hope to get my old call sign back. When I send CW it seems that my hand automatically enters it. So it just seems proper that I use it since my brain has it burned in.
I enjoy your videos. Keep it up. 73's, Tom

It was (and still is) my first HF rig, enjoying it as no other! Hope to work you one day on it.
One tip for using this one I can share: almost all buttons have double functions if you press them for about 3 seconds.
I am far from a manual reader, so still discovering new functions after having this rig for over a year.
    Enjoy it, should be fine!

I just ordered an IC-7300 10/12/2019. Have a Yaesu FT-840, it was my first radio bought back in 8/10/2019. Re-capped Local board and 100MPA board and everything was OK, then re-capped the main board and rendered the FT-840 harmless. So.. that was my justification for the new rig. Although I feel horrible effing up my first rig, so it's gonna get fixed. But I heard the most about this radio from you.

Hi Eric Congratulations on the new upgrade to your shack! I got licensed last year and finally upgraded to Extra earlier this year! My first HF rig was the Yaesu Ft-891 and I soon realized that the Icom 7300 was the Radio I really wanted for my QTH. I don’t at this time like doing SDR on the computer but prefer to have all the SDR features in one box 📦 (like the 7300) I really like the icandy of the waterfall display and being able to just turn on the radio and see what the band conditions are like and where the activity is on the HF bands! And yes take the screen protector off, I have been using the touch screen for a year now with my fingers and have never had any issues with scratches and even finger prints you would be hard pressed to see in the screen! I moved the Yaesu 891 to my vehicle as my mobile rig and love it for that purpose! (And for all you die hard Yaesu fans I agree that the DNR in the Yaesu is superior to the Icom and really cuts down on the noise.....it’s Fantastic but the Icom is just more fun and a breeze to operate especially with my Amp) 73’s Eric and enjoy and thank you for all your great vids 😊 K4BBC ......BTW I am looking forward to see what Yaesu has done with their new SDR transceiver coming out the FTDX101D, hopefully they learned allot from the 7300’s ease of use and incorporated that into their new radio.....a Icom 7610 combined with the DNR of a Yaesu would be a bad A** Radio!

Yes Eric your original 7300 Video is one of the main reasons I have one in my shack today and it’s my main HF rig with a Yaesu Ft-891 for mobile and as a back up shack rig......Love my 7300 Great Great Radio 📻. As I am getting more interested in QRP operation I wish Icom still sold a QRP rig like the 703 and it would be great if they could make an all band 703 with the tuner and internal battery pack (a Li-ion would be good far more power to weight ratio and a great number of recharge cycles with Li-ion batteries) 73’s Eric K4BBC

First SDR Radio from the Big 3 Manuf's. Glad you like the SDR sound and receive. ICOM has propelled Flex Radio to come out with the Knobs marketing this radio. I am glad there is competition. I like its size however I jumped from my 15 yr old SDR-1000 to the 6400 just recently. SDR pulls out weak signals with a very quiet background noise once dialed in.

I feel the same way about Icom. I could tell this was the radio I wanted and truth be told, I almost bought it. But I wanted something I could mount in my car, if I wanted, and I also wanted 2m and 70cm. So I opted for the 7100, and I’m not disappointed. I really wanted the 7100 to have the color touchscreen, the direct sampling, and spectrum scope that this radio has, but ultimately, the smaller form factor, the additional 2 bands and 2m SSB capability won me over the bells and whistles in this radio.
I still have some spare cash burning a hole in my wallet but if I were to pull the trigger on this I’d need an antenna project to go with it as well. For now, if I want HF I sit in my car, but if I want to play with 2m and 70cm repeaters (and the one DStar repeater in Tampa Bay) I can bring it inside easily and plug into a mobile antenna sitting on a trash can.

IC-7300 is a fine radio indeed but would have been outstanding if it had 2 things: an external video monitor connection, and outputs of the I & Q SDR signals. I looked at this rig but decided instead on the Yaesu FT-991A for my needs due to a bit smaller size, (IMO) a bit more rugged, and finally the VHF & UHF coverage.
Putting my silly personal preferences aside, I do really like that the 7300 uses SDR technology under the hood :). Very cool indeed. Congrats Eric!

Congratulations with the new toy! Actually this is a big dilemma for me. Being an Icom man in certain instances I realise that Yaesu has a better rival on the market. Then Icom brings something new, I start comparing and end up in total confusion. Now I feel like heading for Icom IC-7610, unless I start reading about the competing Yaesu rig... Be it as it may, Icom looks better to me. 73 de R2ARM!

Eric...Nice rig! I, like you, was amazed when I purchased and put my IC-7300 on the air! It sits side-by-side with a Yaesu FTDX3000. One thing you may want to try for your next vid to show the receiver sensitivity: use the Grid Tracker software along with WSJT-X and let it count the total number of FT8 decodes in a certain timeframe (say 10 mins) on the 7300. Then swap to your other HF transceiver and do the same thing for same time period ...I think this will really surprise you. 73 - KM4VAD

Being new to HAM this year, I was sold on icom from my very first radio....ic-2730a. Im now licensed Extra, and its about time I get an HF rig. Have been spending a lot of time RX-ing on an RSP1A SDR with dedicated HF antenna inverted L config.
Im either going to pick up an ic-718....great prices right now, possibly an ic-7100 because I like the small desktop head unit that would work really well with my shack/desk setup, or step up to the ic-7300.
Not sure which one yet, but one of these will be in the shack in fairly short order

OK Eric, FB on the new rig. I've had mine a couple of months now and still have a lot to learn about it. PLEASE make some more of your usual fine quality videos about the 7300. Many I have seen zoom right through but don't show the detail of HOW to get to/use the feature. New users have a steep learning curve and too much detail is not possible. BTW: the only additional accessory I've found to be useful so far is an MFJ 993B automatic tuner with a 7300 interface cable. Normally I'm not a big fan of MFJ, but this little auto tuner works GREAT with this rig. Best....

Let me ask you a question my friend, I am new to ham radio… I’m stuck however between buying my first radio: either of the Yaesu FTDX3000 or the Icom 7300. I love the lower noise floor of the 3000 but the digital capabilities of the 7300 are truly stunning at that price point. Can you give me your thoughts?

I am testing a IC-7300 for a friend in Aruba that I will be delivering it to him this Dec. I like it but still would like to know how it compares to the FT991A.
I wish the IC-7300 also had 2/440 but setting that a side the received audio is the best I have every heard. I am getting good transmit audio reports too.

Is the audio loud and clear enough from the internal speaker?
Or is it a good idea to buy the additional external speaker?
    Thanks

HUUGE IC-7300 tip. Google "IC-7300 screen protector" Every new and discerning 7300 owner needs to know this. 5 bucks gets you a screen protector or 2 like on a smartphone, and alleviates the need (I have the same need) to keep the packaging on the face. You are wise and prudent, like myself, to not touch this type of screen if you like longevity. I got my screen protector on Amazon, but I'm sure they are all over the place custom fit for the rig. You can't tell it is on there just like a proper one on a phone.

Rip that factory screen protector off! What is the point of having a beautiful screen if you cover it with a crappy, wrinkly sheet of rubbery plastic?! If you want to keep the screen pristine, go get a real screen protector and it will virtually disappear!
Enjoy the new radio...clearly I'm just jealous!

Before reading your answer Tony I was going to say just the same.
Why keep the ugly protector for a longer "pristine" if what matters is the present moment as no one knows how long we're gonna live!!
Apart from that, the rig is awesome and you Eric are doing a great job. Keep at it

I guess for my opinion here is that it’s his radio and whatever he wants to do with it is up to him. I understand the argument though, but I really believe it’s his radio and he should enjoy it as he wants.

Just keep your fingernails short, and dont press in like you're killing cockroaches. You don't even need a screen protector unless you've got Ham anger issues....
