    I was taught a different method of whipping as a youth, I've never seen this. I like it. It is beautiful and efficient.

    In the commercial fishing realm, we call this a seizing, but it's the same basic knot, just another name

      I assume we call it a seizing because it seizes the end together to keep it from fraying apart.
      But we also us this "style" of binding to size two ropes that cross each other to prevent chafing
