Bless you Edwin, countless hours of web readings and complex videos yet here you are, drawing a smile on my face. I found again the pleasure to play guitar. Thank you again
When I bought a Martin in 2018, I was surprised to see how high the action was set by the factory. After playing it for a couple months and getting really sore fingers and hand cramping (and friends and family saying how hard my new EXPENSIVE Martin was to play) I took it in to a technician and had it professionally set up. He lowered the saddle and cut the nut slots deeper, completely changing the feel. Now it’s my go-to guitar because it feels so natural to play. My 1973 Ovation was like this OUT OF THE BOX. I think Martin should throw in professional custom set up with purchase. They cost enough.
Edwin, you're a lifesaver! I bought a new Martin ten months ago and the neck is already bowed. I was wondering why my alan wrench wasn't working. Thank you!!!
I’ve been playing my Martin for almost 16 years and it never occurred to me that I could adjust the strings. Apparently Martin loves their bluegrass players with such high action. Anyways, now playing doesn’t hurt after an hour or two and it’s much much easier to fingerpick.
Edwin, thank you so much This is the case with my Cort as well and I was worried I may have a manufacturing defect. This video made me heave a sigh of relief Thank you and great content! Dan
Thanks so much.. I bought a new Martin about 4 months ago... I haven’t played in 30 years, I was never really that good.. I am 64 now, I have small hands, I noticed a few weeks ago that the strings needed to be lowered and I adjusted the truss rod.. I couldn’t get it right...this method did the trick..thanks again!!
Awesome Video Edwin! thankyou for making this video, you saved my recording lol my guitar was buzzing all over the place, I had lowered the action months ago and forgot about it but readjusted it to a factory standard today, it sounds normal again lol. I recommend you guys or gals just leave the action factory standard, if you do make any adjustments, make sure they're minimal, 1/4 of a turn in either direction makes a huge difference in sound. I didn't realize this until I started recording I could drastically hear the difference. just subscribed bro, good info

I'm changing my strings as I'm watching this video because I'm switching from Martin 11s bronze strings to Martin Retro light 12s, I've had the retros on my Martin before and they were phenomenal in comparison to bronze and they lasted way longer. First this I did was go and put tape on my Allen wrench, I ate the bronze middle strings from the wrench so covering it with tape is exactly what i did , these retros are nickel and they are amazing. Same price as the other ones
@@Edwin-E I do have a question about AZ desert environment, I've been in lake Havasu AZ for the last 3 months and I'm getting buzzing from the gbe strings between the 9 th and 15 th frets, I literally took my neck truss to the middle where it's no tension, it's a martin so I have the long Allen and can adjust while in tune. I go right still buzz until all the strings buzz in open, I go middle still buzz,, and backwards still buzz from truss rod adjustment. Is my guitar just super dry? @@Edwin-E the action is low, I have moved the truss rod both ways and I'm still getting buzzing, it's super weird, for now I have it sorta in the middle if that makes sense
I think there are two possible causes, the action is too low or the frets not level. Truss rod is only used to straighten the neck to counter the string tension. If the neck is already straight then there is different issue.

Thank you, edwin. I thought my used martin drs1 was missing adjustment rod. It was deeply impeded in the guitar neck. I was very sad till I watch your video. God bless...👍
Thank you sir, this is very helpful. I have a martin dx series both it from previous owner. I don't think the guitar neck is warped or curved but the action is pretty high. Is that possible? Is adjusting the truss rod the proper solution? thank you
welcome. Truss rod adjustment is for neck relief or curved. Although, sometimes it lowers the action if the cause of high action is the curved neck. But, if the neck is already straight, then there is other issue with guitar.
You probably already figured it out, but you can do the string trick in the video (I usually just sight down the neck) to see how if your neck is straight. IF it is, leave the truss rod alone. Most likely the bridge has lifted a bit from the body, therefore raising string action. See if there's a 'hump' over the body in the saddle area. Could have been caused by overtightening strings, on how it was stored, where it was stored, humidity, temp, etc. but the bottom line if the saddle has raised is that you can't fix it (a pro luthier can) BUT you may be able to remove the saddle and file it down carefully on the bottom...just takes some light sandpaper and a smooth surface. Scribe a parallel line close to the bottom and sand evenly to that line. Replace the saddle and check. Repeat if necessary. Unlikely the nut is too high, but possible....you can check out many videos on YT for ideas.
Sorry I am new to guitars. Do I need to turn the wrench until the gap on is gone? Because I did it on my guitar. The gap is all gone like the string on the 6th frets was attached to the frets.
Hi Edwin. Very helpful, thanks. The ebay link takes me to a pager where 4mm, 5mm and 6mm gauge allen keys are shown. Do Martin guitars have a standard for the gauge of truss rod, or is it trial-and-error? Thanks!
Just want to say i successfully loosened my truss road this way. I normally don't like to use the ball end of the allen key to start off a bolt but it worked fine. Obviously the square end is way too short to reach the truss road.

Truss rod adjustment is not for adjusting the action! If the action is high and you've set the correct amount of bow in the neck you need to file the bridge and possible the nut to lower the action.
