I never understand how people just drive the wrong way down the freeway. Not only was this guy driving the wrong way, he was COMPLETELY oblivious to the fact that he was doing so! Freaking unbelievable.
The irresponsibility of this driver is unbelievable. I'm glad there was no accident with innocent victims. The state should suspend his license for this.
I am more concerned with the drivers who nearly hit him head on or were in the next lane as he passed by, only hitting their brakes AFTER they passed him! This tells me they were not paying attention either!
I was driving back from Houston to San Antonio 15 years ago with my mother in the car and I had just switched lanes so I could exit to make a pit stop and suddenly a car came straight at us in the lane I was just in seconds before I made the lane change. The driver was DUI and my father was pulling a trailer about 4 mile behind us. We called and warned him to get off the highway. Minutes later my father called to tell me that he was stuck in traffic due to a horrific crash. That SOB killed six people that night and walked way from the crash. This is some serious shit and this driver should loose his licence forever.
I had a situation about a year ago where I had just exited from the freeway onto a long exit ramp with multiple lanes. All of the sudden, I see headlights coming at me. I start laying on my horn and flashing my brights. I was right in front of this person and they were heading straight for me. I kept honking and flashing my brights trying to get the woman to turn around. It blew my mind when she got right in front of me, about 20 feet away and I SAW HER WAVE ME OVER!! She wanted me to get out of her way. I had to, as I didn't want to get hit by her. I did call 911. She actually got on the freeway. Thankfully, she stopped at the area where the hatch marks are between the freeway and off ramp. I had to go because the light turned green and I was going to an appointment, so I don't know what happened after that point. What blew my mind even more was the fact that no one in the roughly 20 other cars on that off ramp did anything about it. I was the only one honking, flashing my lights and calling 911 trying to stop this woman. Of course, you would think if you see 20 or so cars going one way, and you're going the opposite direction of those cars, that you might want to stop and figure out what's wrong with that picture.
7:39 I'm glad that other officer backed up and stopped there. That 1st officer that stopped and responded was nearly hit several times because of the blind curve. Whew!
@@nathaniel9678 The officers from the first two cars should have vacated the oncoming lane and gone around after they surveyed the situation. The outbound layout provided ample space for several initial emergency vehicles without blocking traffic. Also, it would have been much easier for the boom truck (straight in and stabilizers not required). They needlessly blocked traffic in both directions -- only the outbound should have been closed.
@@nathaniel9678 If it was on the outbound side, the ladder truck could have parked at an angle and eliminated the risk of it and other vehicles getting hit, and then needlessly shutting the inbound lanes.
@@davidmontville4885 Glad I wasn't the only one who wondered why they stopped traffic the way they did. Stopping traffic is always dangerous and great raises the chance of secondary accidents. It looks like there was plenty of space, but maybe since the space in the middle was under construction they didn't know if it was safe enough for vehicles. Or the police would be liable if something went wrong etc...
Mind boggling; safety first and foremost, park in a place where you are protected. The only car that won’t get rear ended is the one dangling off the bridge. The first patrol car that passed the crash may not have seen it but the second car arriving should at least have used the construction lane and not created more of a hazard in the travel lanes. Everyone rubber necking too.
I'm surprised at how many drivers, seeing headlights coming at them, kept to their lane no matter what lane the oncoming headlights were in. I would have pulled over to the right as far I could...
Im not. The majority of drivers barely look past the end of the hood, I mean how can they when they are busy updating their status on Facepage/Insty/Tiktok?
Yea, people actually just ignore them. It happens so often. I passed a wrong way driver a couple weeks ago on my way to work. Pulled over towards the shoulder to give all the room they want, other didn't even blink an eye at him, I don't even think they realized he was going the wrong way. Others just ignore them & hold their lane. That's how nasty head-on wrecks happen.
What is really amazing it how unaware drivers are of what is going on 1/4 mile down the road from them. The majority of brake lights come on when the car traveling in the wrong direction is a few car lengths in front of them or when they are passing. DRIVE AHEAD PEOPLE!
Working for the local telephone company, I often had to block lanes of traffic to create a construction zone to work. Most people seemed to either not see anything further than 30 feet in front of them, or chose to not move over until the last second, so, none of that surprises me. That construction zones was like a bug trap that unwanted pests go into, then can't get out of. :)
@@poormanselectronicsbench2021 Same in this video, watch the people pulling up behind the stopped police vehicles. They look like they're going to rear-end it, they get within a car length then awkwardly try to change lanes at 1mph. Horrible driving.
@@VoxelLoop to be fair that stopped police car is on a curve so it could have been hard to see, it's a little hard to say because we can't see around the curve
My thoughts exactly. I also wondered why they blocked a lane on the otherside as well considering there really wasn't any danger to other road users, 1st responders plus the numb nut that thought he was driving here in Australia 🥴
My exact thought they had a fully closed lane plus the job site, and they chose to block lanes on both sides creating backups and more potential accidents.
The one on the left side is worse because they parked in a blind corner rather than going down to where the construction barriers ended and going up inside to where the crashed vehicle is sitting
Have you ever stood on one of those bridges when heavy traffic is crossing? They should have completely shut it down long before they did. It could have caused the car to fall

Not much they can do at that moment until they can get equipment there to stabilize the vehicle. Any shift in weight could cause the vehicle to fully fall through the gap.
Another job that is not routine is construction. Even if you are performing the same actions, the environment changes, and hence, routine becomes dangerous as, what was safe earlier becomes dangerous later.
@@fredrickcampbell8198 Well if I was in charge I would have got the ladder truck with man to break the side windows and passed a sling through then get a mobile crane to remove the vehicle to safe ground. They needed to block off traffic for the fire trucks. Note the open grid work, the roadway was being demolished and mostly likely not stable enough for the 10 ton fire/rescue trucks.
I don't know why the officers on the southbound side of I-43 blocked up the left lane creating a very hazard condition for drivers coming around that sharp curve. And I am really not understanding why the female officer blocked the left lane on the northbound side when all she had to do was to turn into the construction zone and maneuver her vehicle right at the accident. If she had time to run back to her cruiser, she definitely had time to put her cruiser into the construction zone and get out of the way of traffic and making the road safer while at the same time creating an easier access for her to get to the victims. I am scratching my head on this one. All of these officers have checked out the accident and now all they have to do is move their vehicles into the construction zone and keep this highway open. The Fire and Rescue had to block up the highway for this accident when they also could have gotten into the construction zone very close to the actual accident! WOW! I could have backed at full tractor trailer in that construction zone. It made no sense to had to close the southbound highway down to work that accident when all the first responders could have worked that accident in the construction zone with the Jersey wall as their protection.
So the first priority in an emergency situation is to keep traffic moving? Keep those vehicles rolling around the first responders as they arrive on the scene, assess the situation, stage their equipment and perform their rescue. @@brox906 at the top of the list is to make sure you don't make a bad situation worse. When the rescuer becomes a victim or creates other victims due to thier actions, that's an issue. She literally needed to pull up another 60 and pull off the road. Bad situational awareness.
@@brox906 no, the first priority on scene is to ensure others are not going to become involved in the accident because they then drive into it. As for the other carriageway, with easy access to the construction zone, can you really not see the logic in using the construction zone rather than continuing to sit on the live carriageway. @@scottadkins7917 There's no need to pull up another 60 feet into the construction zone. Re-watch the video beginning at 3:30, there's a long straightaway before she stopped. Oncoming traffic can easily see what is happening.
I am so glad that this ended the way it did. A few years back I worked the graveyard shift on Christmas Day. I was heading home to my family at 8am, tired as hell just trying to get home and get some sleep when suddenly I was staring at a pair of headlights coming at me on the highway. For a split second I thought I had fallen asleep at the wheel before jerking the steering wheel and moving over 2 lanes, the driver was looking straight as if nothing was wrong and continued on. Imagine just minding your own business and dying because of a person like this.
1st cop pulls up and doesn't even bother getting out of his car for a full 2 minutes, and even when the 2nd officer arrives and is sorta running confused in circles, the 1st cop still just stands there - neither make any actual contact with the vehicle or injured driver for a full 3 minutes from the time the 1st patrol car arrives - absolutely rediculous!

They were able to put a ladder right up to the car from below so the structural integrity was not 100%. Who makes the call on safety? That is why you are not in charge. As an experienced demolition and salvage operator I can tell you for sure, that car could drop through if you shifted it or attempted to shore it up. What I can't figure out is why they shut down the express on the left side when they could do the same job on the right side. They had more area to work on the right side, without any security issues. Totally unnecessary to close the express in both directions. And if they understood that it was better to work from the left side, why close the right side and more when they had enough space to park the units without affecting traffic.
Many things get me wondering: - How can you drive on the wrong side of the road for so long? Are you suicidal? - Why are so many people driving so close to him, when they should definetly slow down and change lanes to the right side? - Why does no one turn on their hazard lights and why are only a few warning the driver?
Shit man, I'd say, fuck it...leave him overnight to think about it... I'm sure the construction crew will come in, in the morning and I'm sure they have apparatus to extract him... All I remember is seeing fuzzy little lights coming towards me for just a little bit, n then, all of a sudden the road was just, like gone 🤣🤣🤣
Being in the military really shows me how lucky us Americans are. Going to all the countries I've been to so far and witnessing the lack of resources they have responding to scenes like this mean while this scene alone has 10 different units that we can see atleast. Man we really are lucky and I feel like people should travel the world more to really notice that.
You are so right. I live in Thailand and the "rescue" units typically are an old pickup truck. No equipment on board except maybe a couple of small fire extinguishers and a couple of crowbars. No medical equipment - not even a backboard or neck brace. It's a bit better in Bangkok and a couple of other large cities but elsewhere that's all there is. Then in the big cities there's often massive traffic jams so rescue units may take a very long time and air transportation of victims is non-existent.
It was nice of the highway department to put a Port-O-Jon at the crash scene for all the emergency crew. And if the guy had veered to the right when that center divider opened up he would have been on the correct side of the freeway again and could have just kept cruising!
Yes, but he veered to the left because he decided he wanted to keep on driving on the wrong side of the freeway, which was a good thing. Now he's caught for sure, with nowhere to run.
I would love to see a follow-up on this video. For example, what was the driver charged with, a list of all the substances he had overused prior to starting the drive, and... how long is his license suspended, and why would anyone object to the suspension being for life?

Honestly I will never ever understand what's in the mind of such people - especially truck drivers. NGL, but my buddy (a fresh driver) a week ago shined too. For unknown reason he forgot that he supposed to stick to the right side of the road. Thankfully it was a late evening and almost no traffic. For fun fact, he didn't even realized that after both telling him twice that we're not in the London and him stopping at the traffic lights (still on the left/wrong way). After telling him a third time (more clearly) he blamed me for not telling him that faster, lol. We are from Poland and we live here, so it's completely unexplainable to me how he managed to do that, not understood the "London reference" twice and blame me for his driving. Ahh, nothing is better than a friend from a childhood... xD
As an American living in Japan, it can be confusing at to which side to be on (even after 20 years). If there are other cars, it's easy - just follow their lead. Seems like a bit of response overkill by the FD. They really need all those resources for one car including shutting down the entire freeway? I count 2 ladder trucks, 2 pumpers, 2 supervisor cars, and 2 ambulances, and at least 15 firefighters just standing there and that's just what's in the picture.
My thoughts exactly. The cop should have called tow truck. They have tow trucks that pull semis out of ditches and ravines. I've seen them lift the tractors and trailers and set them right side up using two trucks. Really amazing.
What I think is funny is everyone shows up police ambulances fire engines? It’s like they can’t believe their eyes. “ hey Joe, you gotta come see this idiot!”
The ground crews (all of them) did not have the advantage of our perfect camera view to notice that just one fire truck( ladder) could have easily backed into the construction zone from the right side of the screen. That is what the girl cop who arrived should have done to begin with. From the edge of the constuction zone it appears that the driver window of the vehicle was at most 14 feet from the edge ( that firemen were actually standing in) so not like the edge of death. Hopefully they will all get to see the camera footage we got to see and learn from it. Adrenaline plus different stations and lack of a Chief Commander to have a staging area and give orders, all led to this circus of a rescue. My opinion thats all

There are a lot of comments here that seem to not understand the perspective of the drivers who encountered this person driving the wrong way. When you are a pedestrian, when you’re watching a camera view of the road/highway, even when you’re seeing a dashcam video, these are not the visual perspectives that the driver of a vehicle has. This is already too wordy, so just remember that. No one wants to be slammed head on from someone driving the wrong way. You’re watching a traffic camera view. You don’t have the visuals of the drivers.
Also, while OVI is obviously a likely consideration, often it is elderly people with mental impairment who end up driving the wrong way. So yes, I understand the assumption that the person was under the influence, but it is just a likely assumption. I don’t understand the people saying it’s intentional, though. There is no logic behind that assumption.
How unaware and distracted must you be to create a dangerous situation like this, almost get yourself killed, then have to be rescued by police and fire ? Unreal.
His and anyone who drives a substatial distance the wrong way on a freeway should have their driver's license REVOKED. It looked like that section of bridge already had deck pans underneath the steel framework. These are heavy duty steel panels which can withstand the weight of poured concrete. The SUV likely couldn't have fallen through. You can see some firemen walking below the level of the pavement - they were on those deck pans. The left front wheel of the SUV might already be resting on one of those deck pans. If so, that and the framework holding the right rear of the SUV had it plenty stable. They were climbing all over in it, and I didn't see it wobble even a little.
@@gsdalpha1358 Deck pans would not be UNDER the steel framework. They'd come later and placed ABOVE it. Plus, they raised & swung ladders from beam to beam right thru that area.
Unfortunately revoking his license won’t do anything, people drive anyway.
They should hang the driver at the spot that he killed the six people.

There's alot of fat women down in San Antonio
7:39 I'm glad that other officer backed up and stopped there. That 1st officer that stopped and responded was nearly hit several times because of the blind curve. Whew!
They both should have gone around -- it was unnecessary to block traffic there because there was no access.
I'm surprised at how many drivers, seeing headlights coming at them, kept to their lane no matter what lane the oncoming headlights were in. I would have pulled over to the right as far I could...
It's shock, you don't expect it coming
Im not. The majority of drivers barely look past the end of the hood, I mean how can they when they are busy updating their status on Facepage/Insty/Tiktok?
I would've urinated myself.
WHen you're high on whatever nothing occurs to you. That's the problem.

My exact thought they had a fully closed lane plus the job site, and they chose to block lanes on both sides creating backups and more potential accidents.
The one on the left side is worse because they parked in a blind corner rather than going down to where the construction barriers ended and going up inside to where the crashed vehicle is sitting

Not much they can do at that moment until they can get equipment there to stabilize the vehicle. Any shift in weight could cause the vehicle to fully fall through the gap.
This is not the sort of job where the actions necessary are routine. Thinking before starting to do anything in jobs like these is very important.
Another job that is not routine is construction. Even if you are performing the same actions, the environment changes, and hence, routine becomes dangerous as, what was safe earlier becomes dangerous later.

By the way, you've got some really good-quality traffic cameras there in Milwaukee! Much better than many of the other cities I've seen! Also, why didn't the police cars and firetrucks immediately drive into the construction entrance? They could have gone there first to assist the motorist, rather than stopping traffic on the highway. It took them almost 3 minutes to go in to see if the driver was ok! Meanwhile, all the other clueless drivers are literally still *FLYING* through the Work Zone at 75 MPH... Unbelievable!
I am glad that I don't live there. 25 police, fire and rescue. 29 min. to remember they had a ladder truck? Whew! Bunch of really bright ones here people.
But when there's no one around, one's brain goes into turmoil-mode. Happened in reverse when I visited the US. Ended up on the wrong side because there were no other cars around to give me a point of reference. So it definitely happens momentarily!
@@michaelm.1947 I can understand that explain, but it was in the city, short, straight and nicely lighted road, with multiple points of reference. He drove that road multiple times before.
My explain for that is far more simple - distracted by talking too much (which is nothing new with him - he's that type of overenergetic person that can't sit down for a minute to eat some food or be quiet for a moment to let someone else talk).
I’m laughing at all the drivers that almost hit the police cruiser like three time pay attention y’all
Im laughing at how the cops end up sitting in the driven lanes instead of pulling into the open and empty construction zone where theres access to the moron theyre after.
Oh boy.
I am well aware that rescue personnel are needed, but approx. 30 people and 11 vehicles from the fire service, isn't that over the top?
The recently installed wrong-way driver trap catches its first victim!
Why does this person have their licence?
Is this why my taxes are higher than Snoop Dogg? Look how many responders show up for a two-Cletus job.
What I think is funny is everyone shows up police ambulances fire engines? It’s like they can’t believe their eyes. “ hey Joe, you gotta come see this idiot!”
at some point even a drunk driver would think hey why does everyone keep driving in my lane? oh wait its me in the wrong lane
My opinion thats all
Show you a video from relatively far away....and you'll come up with all the answers from the comfort of your couch. They all did just fine. Take the week off.
LMAO Yes. Great plan. Park a fire engine, which weighs between 38,000 to 60,000 lbs onto an unsurfaced, unfinished, elevated platform, and now you have two rescue events. If your plan was to keep the fire department busy so you can set fire to your neighbor's lawn, congratulations, you nailed it, Captain Armchair.
@@Shit_I_Missed. Brilliant, I was thinking why don't they get closer and then realized It's a worksite and probably not safe for several tones of firetruck. At least I had the advantage of thinking before I opened my mouth:))
This has got to be a scene from the movie Police Academy. The police on the right needs to get their eyes checked and the police on the left just wants to get rear ended. What a bunch of wizards
🤣🤣🤣 perfect example.
Five star video! Best of the year on YT. Thanks for posting.
I cried a lot watching this. It is one of the most beautiful videos ever recorded in the internet. All the people involved and focused on saving one life. Can't this be more poignant? Is this the human spirit we want to have? Of course.
This is the architecture of saving one life.
at 1:05 you can see them flash their highbeams at the oncoming traffic, they seriously thought they were going the right way i guess
tbh crashing into road contstruction is one of the best outcomes of a wrong-way driver.
I don think they had enough fire trucks and ambulances, they probably should have put the call out to neighboring counties.
Lol why when there are like 30 fire houses in Milwaukee and North Shore has some too as well as Tosa
National Guard too.
You only need a certain amount standing around looking.
LOL
Oh snap...they eventually closed the other side of the roadway as well. Good idea though, using the crane ladder.
How unaware and distracted must you be to create a dangerous situation like this, almost get yourself killed, then have to be rescued by police and fire ? Unreal.
amazing to watch the 1st cops rush to get there then just standing around
What do you expect them to do? They called for emergency service!
Someone has to place the police cars in inappropriate positions
His and anyone who drives a substatial distance the wrong way on a freeway should have their driver's license REVOKED. They need to take driver's ed and a substance abuse course before a new license is given. It takes more effort to get a new license than it does to get a suspended license reinstated. Many states can permanently revoke a driver's license for very serious offenses.
And unfortunately there are still people who drive even with a revoked driver's license.
not how it works also could have a medical issue you never judge
@@NickyD Then there must be a LOT of drivers with medical conditions. All of the reported wrong way drivers on the news in my area are under the influence, not a medical condition.
People pretty confused by flashing lights apparently 😕
Drunks are drawn to flashing lights.
He probably wondered why all those other drivers were going the wrong way. German radio covers autobahn traffic, providing real-time announcement of so-called "Geisterfahrer", or ghost drivers.
Well I guess at least it was entering an unexpected construction zone backwards that stopped him instead of a head-on collision with another car.
Must have been distracted by the 18 inch laptop screen in the front seat
Not all screens are laptops dummy.
I would’ve thought the ladder truck would’ve been the choice for extraction but they did it differently. I couldn’t tell if they stabilized the vehicle prior to rescue but it seems like they would have done that for safety. Great rescue!
As far as saying "They were climbing all over in it, and I didn't see it wobble even a little".... there was really only 1 fireman at the right rear who only put weight on the car at the very end when he got in the rear to help the kid out. You often don't get any wobble/movement until a critical holding point breaks free and then you have an instant drop or significant movement.
They used a cable. Didn't you see it when the fireman tried over it. It is on the right side of video near toilet
@@jackieelliott2992 The point is that they didn't pull out the cable till toward the end of their operation and also that they didn't put any tension on it until right before they got the kid out.
How can you be this oblivious and incompetent and have a license ? Not only did they drive the wrong way for what seemed like miles, but then they just drove right into a giant clearly visible hole. This person was trying real hard to win a Darwin Award
i like how the responders shut down both sides of the highway with 5 firetrucks when all the emergency vehicles could have fit in the closed off lanes.
Common sense tells you the safest way to recover the vehicle and person is to shut down the freeway, or else you could get another idiot like them to fly through the scene and cause another crash
