  • How did Bridge to Terabithia become a movie?
    Katherine Paterson's heartbreaking novel, Bridge to Terabithia made a huge impact on me when I read it as a kid, and probably many other kids through many generations. A powerful story had the ability to do that.
    I felt it was right for me to pay homage to the first book to ever make me feel like I've truly lost a friend when a character died (sorry, it's not George RR Martin). In this episode of Adaptations, I look into the tragic inspiration of Bridge to Terabithia and how the torch of the story was past on from mother to son.
    This is the story of Katerine Paterson's novel, but it's also a story about David L Paterson's childhood and his adaptation of the Newbery award-winning children's novel.

    I remember hating how the story went, I think I was like 8 or 9 when I watched it, I wish I didn't. Not until I was older at least, I remember the story ripping me to shreads.

    Thank you for sharing your insights about the movie I learned a lot. I've just finished watching the movie again. Trying to see how my understanding changed since I watched it in 2007.
    I did have a different interpretation from what was meant by Katherine Paterson. I'm now interested to read the book. Just to understand what the author's original focus is behind the meaning of the story.
    I still shed tears because I too lost a friend when I was 9. He died of eye cancer.

    This movie broke me as a kid

  • @flubber1557
    @flubber1557 2 года назад +3

    I love your review and I must say this movie didnt seem to great to me as a kid. However as an adult now I can appreciate and see the lessons that I would have learned from it. How bullies may not all be as bad as they seem for no good reason. How not every parent acts the same way but in the end most will love their children even if its through tough love. Also how life is full of greatness and yet still holds many disappointments too. I was a kid who made up imaginary games like they did and I also had a hard time in school and making friends. This movie was very relatable to me as a kid. I can only hope other children may look back the same way as adults. This movie was clearly made to show the authors life lessons more so than entertainment and I think it did so very well. I think having seen this and some other content had helped me with the passing of a family member. Strangely enough that same family member had gifted me a acrillic paint set in a wooden box just like in this movie. That family member I had previously praised for her paintings also left me with a birthday present I asked for 1 year. It was a remake of another picture she did in the past that I could frame. I still have that picture framed and on the wall of my house. So... yeah this movie hits me a bit hard.

    I had not read the book. I was really not satisfied with the excuse of her dying in the movie by falling in the water. Kids that grow up with a rope swing over water like that tend to be self taught swimmers. As she was such a vibrant girl that relished being outside and the freedom and resilience growing up like that can give (which is how I grew up and with a male best friend) it made no sense to me that she would drown. Honestly, there is something more believable about the randomness of a lightening strike. It helps explain that death can be random and sudden. I could have used this book in 1977 when I was in 6th grade and found a good friend I had just meet that year dying of an overdose in the school bathroom during classes. Back then they did not give you any therapy. The adults just refused to talk about it. They looked the other way when she came to school with bruises down her arms. Only the police that talked to me then gave a damn about the abuse her father was giving her after her mother had died. I think this book is something I need to find now. I am 58 now but it might still give comfort.

      Even the author and her son hate the 1985 version with her son going on to describe it “as the crazy cousin in a mental hospital nobody wants to talk about”. That’s right. He compared the 1985 film to a frigging mental hospital patient!
