  • Wood ash lye, also known as potash or potassium hydroxide, can be obtained by leaching water through wood ash. It was historically used in soap making and as a cleaning agent due to its alkaline properties.
To make wood ash lye, follow these general steps:
    1. Collect Wood Ash:
Gather wood ash from hardwoods, as they contain more potassium carbonate.
    2. Avoid using ash from treated or painted wood.
    3.Create a Leaching Container:
Make a container with drainage at the bottom, such as a barrel or a large bucket.
    4. Place a layer of small stones or gravel at the bottom.
    5.Layering Ash:
Add a layer of straw or another porous material on top of the stones, then place a thick layer of wood ash on top of it.
    6. Leaching Process:
Slowly pour water through the ash, allowing it to percolate down.
    7. Collect the liquid that drains out. This liquid is your lye solution.
    8.Testing Concentration:
Test the concentration of lye by placing a raw egg in the solution.
If it floats, the lye is strong enough for soap making.
    9. Boil Down:
Boil down the lye solution to concentrate it further, if desired. Be cautious as concentrated lye is caustic.
    10. Filtering:Filter the solution to remove any remaining particles.
    11. Store Safely:Store the lye solution in a labeled, tightly sealed container away from children and pets.
Remember, working with lye requires caution and protective gear, such as gloves and eye protection, due to its caustic nature. Additionally, ensure proper ventilation when working with lye solutions.

It’s very convenient. Thank you for sharing Ma. But can I just buy the regular akanwu(potash) in the market and soak it before straining the water for soap making?
