My Grandma used to tat...that was the one needle craft she didn't have a chance to share with me. I have a few pillowcases with her tatting on the edges - they're so lovely and priceless! This video was so fun! Thanks for sharing your talents!
I too am a hoarder of (every useful items) haha. I'm going to try my hand at this idea. I Could see this on vests, purses, this would make a beautiful decorative pillow. THANK YOU for sharing!!!
I admire your stitch regulation ability. I’m just getting started using free motion and I’m seeing it’s not as easy as it looks! Love your artistry as always ❤
What I do with my pieces of colorful yarn and snippets: Every spring, I take a bunch of them, make piles and tie them together with a ribbon. I then take them out and hang/tie them in my trees in my backyard. Birds come, and you can see where they have taken them out and taken them to their nests. You can see nests with my snippets in them. The little birds just love them, and it is so fun to look up and see your yarn flying in the tree. This suggestion was used one year on The Fons & Porter sewing tv show.💕
You are a true artist! You're SO good at mixing and matching colors and textures and your projects always come out beautiful! I love to watch and get so inspired. The other day I bought som textile belts from a charity shop to cover with fabric scraps after seeing your video! Thankyou so much for sharing Julia 💞
I'm so excited that you are trying the patchwork belts! I just picked a couple more last week and can't wait to get started. Each turns out so unique. Thanks for all your kind words. Julia
Wow...fantastic way to use up scraps ...I'd been keeping the scraps for stuffing but I love these ribbons...they can be added to bags etc...Thank you for sharing this Julia. Gilly wife of Mark in Norfolk UK
Hi Gilly, I am so glad you found my channel! Thank you so much for your kind words and taking the time to comment. It really means a lot to me. Happy creating! Julia
I have tatted both with the shuttle and the needle. I don't do too much shuttle work anymore because my thumbs don't work properly now. But it is beautiful and I do enjoy it.
My mother did tatting. She made some beautiful pieces. I have all of her tools and thread but I know I don’t have the patience to learn. I love looking through the box she kept it all in. Great memories of her. I will save all of her pieces. Can’t bring myself to use any of it in a project. Or maybe I just haven’t found the right project to use it in yet!
Speaking of tatting - my aunt used to tat with a shuttle and tried to teach me how to do it. I couldn't get the sequence of movements right, but years later as an adult I tried learning needle tatting. Found it much easier to do. However it is done, creating those lacy loops takes alot of time - you are right to hoard yours! Enjoyed your tutorial and what beautiful results!
Hi Dianne, I recently tried the needle tatting and I found it easier. I still find it a bit tedious. I think I'll stick to finding it at thrift stores and flea markets :)
This is really a cool video! You touched on the fabric for trimming, how you decorated it, sewed it down FMQ & I really like how you added the stamping both on your creation as well as the tag wrap! So much informative info along with the mesmerizing process! I am really psyched to make trim, (instead of purchasing ready-made)! Thanks!!!
Thank you!! Really enjoyed this!! I never knew to drop the mechanism below when you the foot you were using! Thank you!! You have a great channel!! Thank you for teaching us!!
wow, i am so going to try this. i'm a quilter and crafter (cards, mixed media etc) maybe there's a reason why I have a lifetime supply of scraps !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what a wonderful idea. I am always forcing myself NOT to horde all those little ends and pieces. Now I have a reason to HORDE ON!!! fun, can't wait to try this.
I learned how to needle Tat . The shuttle looked so hard but then never tried it. I have bins of laces, ribbons scraps and have even thrown in some of my tatting in it. Love your ideas thanks for sharing .
I love your treasure box!! I keep all of my scraps too and I love them all! My collection is getting too extensive though so I'm glad to find a dedicated project for them, thank you!
I am so happy that I found your channel! I was looking for a tutorial for the scrappy ribbon, but I’m enthralled with your other videos, too. Thank you for sharing!
I have soooo many yards of my Grandmother’s handmade tatting. Several colors, some variegated. She passed in 2005, but my mother, before her own death in 2001 got a lot of her stuff for me! I also have 5 bags of handmade yo-yos. I dint know how to tat but I have three or four shuttles
Hi Rhonda, Wow, I love that you still have some of your Grandmother's tatting. It is so beautiful and one of those lost arts. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Julia
I haven't tatted with a shuttle but I did learn how to do needle tatting through you-tube videos.... It is super easy and nice to take with you... There are only really two stitches you use.... Anyone can do needle tatting!!! You should try it!
Great video sweetie. I have made some but only with long fibers. No snippets & I have been wanting to make some. I really love the stamping. It just gives the trim that little extra interest. TFS Toodles
Hi, Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. The stamping really does add a lot. I use a permanent waterproof ink pad so it can get wet. I have been doing some "themed" ribbon and have added it to my shop. It is such a great way to use up scraps etc. Happy creating- Julia
I love this idea. You are such a great saver of ...everything LOL . The finished product presents so nicely. I would buy them...now I think I will try to make them since I am far from your shop.
I love this idea! I have an old clear glass candy jar full of bits and pieces of ribbon (and some tatting too!). My first thought was that these would be cute as ribbons on gifts instead of paper ribbon, especially with brown craft paper instead of wild colored gift wrap. Or even hair ribbons for little girls. It might inspire the receiver save it and reuse it too.
oh my gosh... I'm thinking of all the teeny tiny bits & pieces of fabric & trim that I have tossed out.... aaaaggghhhh... Thank you for your inspiration!! Now I'll be saving, & using those eensy bits to make something beautiful!!
I do both shuttle and needle tatting I love using it in mixed-media projects. Thanks for the inspiration in making fabric trim. I also recently began stamping fabric when I want a very specific theme, I use Stazon ink.
I just ran across my aunt’s tatting shuttles while doing my sewing room declutter- it’s on my bucket list! Do you use crochet thread or is there a specific tatting thread? I love my Stazon ink too!
Thanks for sharing this darling idea! I have yet to try free motion stitching with my machine, but I think it can do it. I'm way more inspired after watching you:-)
I needed some snowflakes for a wall quilt I was making, I tried crocheting them, but was not happy with the look. I looked up tatting on Y.T. I found a fabulous tutorial on needle tatting. SO much easier than using a shuttle. The snow flakes I made came out really well and were great fun to make. Interesting ribbon tutorial, I would never of thought of it. Oh boy, do I have the supplies to use. Wendy
Hi, someone else mentioned needle tatting and I am so intrigued! I have been watching videos on it too and will be giving it a try. I love the look of tatting and sometimes find it on hankies etc at the flea market. I have tried with a shuttle but can't seem to get it-might be that I'm left-handed :) Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Julia
I tried shuttle tatting and was all fingers and thumbs, I had a hard time finding tatting needles so I bought doll needles and ground the points off with emery paper. It does a great job. Now the needles are readily available. Good luck! Wendy.
Wish I had seen this before I threw some scraps in the garbage. And you know when you hear that little voice say no save it save it and you don't. Hahahah. I just disassembled a bunch of levis and threw them in a vac bag and put in my garage until I can get to them. I use to have my car in there but at this rate I may have to move my car. Hahah so I may start making theses and add to my levi jackets. Thanks Julia for you're great ideas.
I do know how to tat yet it’s been so long since I’ve practiced!! The beauty of it is you can tat with yarn as well as the thinnest of thread!! Can’t believe I
Wow! Was not expecting this type of video. Very beautiful !! I was actually looking for labels to insert in my items I make. I -love it ! -Love it ! -Love it ! You have unexpectedly surprised me and now have inspired me to... well..now I know what to do with my scraps then to check them out. Thanks again!!
Love this I’ve just made a journal doing similar but not using free motion as my feed dogs won’t go down so as new to sewing I think I need another plate or something? X
Hi, On some sewing machines, instead of having a button to lower the feed dogs, it comes with a plate to cover the feed dogs. You may want to check your manual. If you no longer have the manual, we may be able to find the info by searching the internet or calling a sewing machine dealer. Hope this helps. Your journals sound cool- I checked out your channel and subscribed! Julia
I am so glad I found you on RUclips. Your creations are “right up my alley”. Love them all. You are so creative and talented. Lots of great ideas to use the scraps I’ve been saving & combine my stamps as well as colored pencils. The sky is the limit! LOL Thank you so much for sharing with the world. I plan to make some fabric bookmarks with the way you made your sachets. Just use 2 pieces of fabric with stiff interfacing. Also could use these ribbon scraps as well. Have a happy week! Hugs! 💝
Hi Julia as always you always produce fabulous tutorials. The ribbons are gorgeous, I would be over the moon if I was given a pack of ribbons like yours which has sparked off ideas for Christmas gifts for my sewing pals. You are amazing Julia thank you so much. Have a fabulous week, sending big hugs and loves as always. Dorothy xxxxx🙋🏻😘❤️
Thank you Julia, I have a big jar of scraps. I will be making these ribbons for sure. Great idea. I would love to do free motion but my machine is just basic and the feeder foot doesn't drop. 😞😞 hey ho, never mind I'll just do it with what stitches I have on my machine. Take care. Love Lita from the UK.
Julia I have purchased your items before. LOVE ❤️ Love the great ideas and products. You have such a artistic brain lol. I don’t miss any of your post and just found this one. It’s great! Who would have thought of that.?? Looking forward to your future post. Merry Christmas it’s 2021 …
This is an interesting idea. I keep my itty scraps(small stuff) in a large gallon sized pickle jar , I add to it every time I sew. Good way to use them. Thanks
Love your suggestions.. so far it is the keeping of a little 'box' of personal interests keeps beside the sewing machine, excellent and helpful idea. Thanks!! The other thing, is I wanted to share with you that there are many many tutorials on how to tat, with or without a shuttle, on You Tube.. I was really into watching them a year or less ago.. and thought you may be interested to look there, even for beginners I found many!! II am now at 4:47 into your tutorial here, and will now get back to it..... !!!
I have just stumbled on to your videos and WOW, how much fun it is to watch you create this Making Fabric Trim from Scraps. What a wonderful way to use our scraps. And I watched your video on Making Journals from Sewing Patterns...as I was looking for new ways to use my pattern tissue paper.....and searching for how to "ruch" fabric/lace/trims. I even went to your etsy shop and ordered a journal. So glad I found your channel and can't wait to watch more videos for inspiration !! May I ask which sewing machine you use....I love the feature of free styling stitching. Thanks for sharing !!
Thank you so much for your order! I am so glad you are enjoying the videos. I have a Janome Memory Craft sewing machine, but almost any sewing machine is capable of free motion stitching. You do have to disengage the feed dogs and use a free-motion foot. Most machines have a button to lower the feed dogs, some may have a plate to cover the feed dogs. If your machine does not have a free-motion (or darning foot), you can purchase them from a dealer or Amazon sells them. I hope this helps. Free-motion stitching is so fun and it opens a whole new world of sewing possibilities! Julia
HI, In this video, I use a free motion quilting foot that sets above the fabric. The feed dogs are dropped and I move the fabric. I love free motion stitching because you can sew forward, backwards or side to side without raising the presser foot. It's a lot of fun! Hope this helps, Julia
My mother-in-law-can tat, because she was raised in a church where the ladies wore small tatted headpieces when they prayed. I should ask her to show me how!
Hi, you had mentioned that you would like to Tat. if you can't get the hang of shuttle tatting try needle tatting. It's easier. I have loved needle tatting for years and now think maayyybe, I can move up to the shuttle. Worth a try
So many people have recommended needle tatting. I looked up some videos on it and I think I can do it! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Julia
Hi Julia. I taught myself to tat using a library book. It's quite easy once you get the tension right. Interweave have a video on tatting - I saw it in their sale the other day!. Love your work
Bravo!!!!!!!! this is brilliant..oooh I am not going to sleep tonight ....yeah it's all your fault...lol thank you for sharing with us..Hugs, from North Carolina
I am an experienced needleworker in many areas. I took tatting lessons from a wonderful tatter. If you can buy it, don't even think of doing it yourself. It is VERY difficult.
I tried tatting years ago. I took a class. I made the world's largest ball of knots - none of which looked like tatting. These days, tourists stop by to have a picture taken in front of this roadside attraction.
@@stitchesbyjulia You gave me a much needed laugh today! I might have been exaggerating a bit by claiming to have made the largest ball of randomly and peculiarly knotted string as a result of my disastrous failure at tatting. Still it was pretty impressive. But your question did prompt me to Google an answer for you. The world's largest ball of string is in Valley View, Texas. It measures 13ft. 2.5in. diameter and 41ft. 6in. at the circumference. Now THAT'S an impressive tatting failure!

What a wonderful idea. This would be such a great project to do with kiddos!
Love to tat both with needle and shuttle. It's the only lace making that hasn't had a machine to duplicate the art, so you know it's ALWAYS handmade.
You are a true artist! You're SO good at mixing and matching colors and textures and your projects always come out beautiful! I love to watch and get so inspired. After all these years, I finally know what to do with all my great fabric scraps, trims, threads and more! Great ideas!
Thank you for sharing your fabric trim from scraps. I do know how to tat. It's been a while. Beautiful trim from scraps. Like the inking stamp idea.
My mother did tatting. She made some beautiful pieces. I have all of her tools and thread but I know I don’t have the patience to learn. I love looking through the box she kept it all in. I feel like I probably have multipler lifetimes worth of scraps but its soo hard to not buy more stuff.
UNBELIEVABLE! They're absolutely beautiful! I can't wait to try it out! Thank you for yet another great tutorial!
So glad you liked the video! Thanks for watching, Julia

Hi Cindy, Thanks for watching! Julia
Oh my! you have got my creative mojo flowing....so many scraps n I love this, have to try it, thank you, its fabulous.

I learned how to needle Tat . The shuttle looked so hard but then never tried it.

Hi, A couple others have commented on needle tatting. I had never heard of it before. A good thing to put on my 2018 bucket list!
I have done needle tatting. It wasn't too hard, but it is time consuming. I taught myself a few years ago when I was laid up after an operation.
Love this and you have convinced me to try free motion making these! You are the best!
I love this idea. You are such a great saver of ...everything LOL . The finished product presents so nicely. I would buy them...now I think I will try to make them since I am far from your shop.
These ribbons are beautiful. Love them.
So creative. Never would have thought of it but love this.
Hi Cheryl! This is one of those "I can't throw anything away videos" LOL! Thanks for watching! Julia
You inspire me to get out my scrap box and make these wonderful ribbons. You are so creative and your work is lovely.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching. Happy stitching! Julia
I love this idea! I have an old clear glass candy jar full of bits and pieces of ribbon (and some tatting too!).

Yes- great ideas!
I just love your style! Such a wonderful idea your videos I appreciate them very much! You’re a great inspiration and so very creative.

Julia, you are so clever. Admire your creativity.
Thanks for watching! These ribbons have been very popular in my Etsy shop! Wish they weren't so time consuming LOL. Thanks for watching! Julia

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I've thrown away so much also!
You can also use the fabric scraps as filler for pillows/etc.
Thank you, I am so happy to watch and learn from you, I get so much from you knowledge.
Thanks so much for watching Irina! I learn so much from everyone in the comments too. I love this creative community! Julia

Thanks for sharing this darling idea! I have yet to try free motion stitching with my machine, but I think it can do it. I'm way more inspired after watching you:-)
Hi Sue, Free motion is really simple once you get the hang of it. A little practice and you're off! The possibilities are endless.
I needed some snowflakes for a wall quilt I was making, I tried crocheting them, but was not happy with the look. I looked up tatting on Y.T. I found a fabulous tutorial on needle tatting. Hi Rita, Thanks so much for your lovely comment, it brightened my day! Julia
Love this ribbon!
Love all your ideas! So original!
I did tatting a long long time ago, it is a lost art, I didn’t stick with, however I did it long enough to know how tedious it is. It is beautiful!
I love the look of tatting too! So delicate!
I love watching your videos, you are so creative and inspiring, thank you
Hi Anne, Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching! It's been a busy summer but I hope to get a new video up soon! Happy creating, Julia
Thanks Julia, a great idea to get started on. Love it !
Typical fun stuff to play with on a chilly wet day. :-).
Hi Phyllis! Hope you are doing well. My summer shop is done for the year and now it's time to clean my house Ha!
Just beautiful 💗💗 thanks for sharing this 💗
I LOVE this idea for my old scraps. I can use them in my textile art. TFS.
Beautiful, your videos leave me feeling so inspired 🤩
Lovely project. Thanks so much!

I do needle tatting....it is easy to learn and the effects are the same as shuttle tatting...
This is an interesting idea. I keep my itty scraps(small stuff) in a large gallon sized pickle jar , I add to it every time I sew. Good way to use them. Thanks
This video was such a pleasure to watch, inspiring!
I had 2 great aunts that tatted. I wasn't old enough to appreciate how it was done.
I've new to using a sewing machine. Love this idea very much
So whimsical! Thanks for sharing
Love your suggestions.. so far it is the keeping of a little 'box' of personal interests keeps beside the sewing machine, excellent and helpful idea. Thanks!! Would love to see them into things, how it looks and ideas on how to use.
What lovely ribbon! Very cool! I am going to start a snippy bin right away!
Julia
Love this, Julia. No, I don’t tat, though I crochet. I wonder if you found some tatters.
Hi Barbara, Many have suggested needle tatting. It is easier than the traditional shuttle tatting. I have not tried it yet but it looks intriguing!
Wow they are beautiful 👏🏼
I love this.... I am new to using a sewing machine on like my journals & stuff..... do you need something special to get the fabric to move freely?
HI, In this video, I use a free motion quilting foot that sets above the fabric. The feed dogs are dropped and I move the fabric. I love free motion stitching because you can sew forward, backwards or side to side without raising the presser foot. It's a lot of fun! Hope this helps, Julia
I like the idea of keeping the scraps in one place. can I use that idea too? take care and God bless :)
My mother-in-law-can tat, because she was raised in a church where the ladies wore small tatted headpieces when they prayed. I should ask her to show me how!
Thank you! Lesson taught me not to throw away any scraps!
Love your work
Hi Sarah, I'm going to give it a try again. I have 2 old shuttles that have been passed down and would love to learn. Thanks for watching. Julia
So much fun!

Leik commente SVP noublie pas la cloche de notifications👍👍👍👍
I am an experienced needleworker in many areas. I took tatting lessons from a wonderful tatter. If you can buy it, don't even think of doing it yourself. It is VERY difficult.
Thank you. Now I'm a #fabrichoardertothetoplevel 😍
Love this technique. Thanks for sharing. Recently I had tried to tat. It’s easiest on needles. Lots of RUclips’s on it.
Hi Kim, I started watching some videos on needle tatting. It has really peaked my interest. I love the look of it. Thanks for watching. Julia

Great idea Julia, and cute too! :)
I tried tatting years ago. I took a class. I made the world's largest ball of knots - none of which looked like tatting. These days, tourists stop by to have a picture taken in front of this roadside attraction.
HI Ruth, I have heard of that! Which state is it in?
@@stitchesbyjulia You gave me a much needed laugh today! I might have been exaggerating a bit by claiming to have made the largest ball of randomly and peculiarly knotted string as a result of my disastrous failure at tatting. Still it was pretty impressive. But your question did prompt me to Google an answer for you. The world's largest ball of string is in Valley View, Texas. It measures 13ft. 2.5in. diameter and 41ft. 6in. at the circumference. Now THAT'S an impressive tatting failure!
Great , fun , video, I’ll have to try this, thanks
