Not really a fair test. For accurate results you would need both pairs brand new. Shoes aren't made for a lifetime that long. Any benefits that older shoe had are far gone. Plus you may have been unintentionally holding back as to not further damage the older shoe.

I’m thinking about getting my brother shoes for track for his birthday. He has shoes now but they’re nothing special and probably don’t even help him. He’s a decent runner and can run a 6:25 miles with bad shoes so i want to get him some better ones for his birthday, I can’t wait to see what he’ll be able to do with them.
Back when I was in high school in 2015, I bought a re-release pair of Nike waffle racers from J-crew for I wanna say like 80 bucks? Honestly some of the best shoes I've ran in to this day and I set a bunch of PRs in them. The waffle traction works really well for off road races and they grip a track pretty well too and the upper feels soft and breathable. Totally recommend them to any runners or anyone that just wants a retro look.

They literally do. It's like a mustang racing another mustang in a quarter mile race. One has brand new racing specific tires and the other is running stock all weathers. The one with the racing tires is going to vastly outperform the one running the all seasons.

Coming from a college xc and track runner, that doesn’t really determine how fast you’ll run a mile. Sure trainers from 50 years ago might make a little difference than ones from today, but it mostly depends on your personal speed and your recent training. Also, you don’t need the most expensive ones, they do not guarantee you’ll run faster

What I'd be more interested in knowing though is what kind of difference I might reasonably expect to see going from something like the Boston 12 to the Adios Pro 3. I'm not convinced I'd see any noticable difference, which has prevented me from spending the money on top end shoes, but maybe it would make a difference?
I’ve just started using running shoes with more technology built in them since I’m running for longer distances now. Before I only using older bare minimum style running sneakers (like the Onitsuka Tiger) as I was only running a max of 3-5 miles.
What difference does it make? A mile is a mile no matter where you run. If you can't figure out why one might run in outer lanes, then you probably don't understand physics and biomechanics.

This experiment is flawed there no exact way to prove this claim as there’s no way to keep your running speed constant across two tests. Plus if you do so no matter the shoe or no shoe if you running at the same speed it doesn’t matter what you wear
The newer shoes are estimated to give a 4% boost of efficiency/running economy in elite runners. Someone not as fast may experience a slightly higher number, but it doesn't take a minute off your mile time. I have 2 different pairs of carbon plated shoes, and yes they help...but you don't just shave off minutes in a short race. They're actually more designed for road racing at slightly longer distances like half marathon and marathon. That's where you'll notice the biggest difference
if the old shoes were really made in 1973 and not just released in that year, than the physical age of the shoe itself definitely also plays a role. I wonder how the new ones will do in 50 years if you use that exact pair

Try new balance supercomp for 185$. Carbon plate is in the mid foot not at front like Nike. In mid is safer. I damaged my ankles in Nikes
