he said that because back when the old shoes were the norm it would be cheaper than the new Nike ones probably. What I mean is that when he bought it it was cheap. Anything that is old becomes a collectors item and goes higher in value the older is is.

Back when I was in high school in 2015, I bought a re-release pair of Nike waffle racers from J-crew for I wanna say like 80 bucks? Honestly some of the best shoes I've ran in to this day and I set a bunch of PRs in them. The waffle traction works really well for off road races and they grip a track pretty well too and the upper feels soft and breathable. Totally recommend them to any runners or anyone that just wants a retro look.

Coming from a college xc and track runner, that doesn’t really determine how fast you’ll run a mile. Sure trainers from 50 years ago might make a little difference than ones from today, but it mostly depends on your personal speed and your recent training. Also, you don’t need the most expensive ones, they do not guarantee you’ll run faster

What I'd be more interested in knowing though is what kind of difference I might reasonably expect to see going from something like the Boston 12 to the Adios Pro 3. I'm not convinced I'd see any noticable difference, which has prevented me from spending the money on top end shoes, but maybe it would make a difference?

This experiment is flawed there no exact way to prove this claim as there’s no way to keep your running speed constant across two tests. Plus if you do so no matter the shoe or no shoe if you running at the same speed it doesn’t matter what you wear

The newer shoes are estimated to give a 4% boost of efficiency/running economy in elite runners. Someone not as fast may experience a slightly higher number, but it doesn't take a minute off your mile time. I have 2 different pairs of carbon plated shoes, and yes they help...but you don't just shave off minutes in a short race. They're actually more designed for road racing at slightly longer distances like half marathon and marathon. That's where you'll notice the biggest difference

if the old shoes were really made in 1973 and not just released in that year, than the physical age of the shoe itself definitely also plays a role. I wonder how the new ones will do in 50 years if you use that exact pair
