    First, let me state that I am old. A life time ago, my Master’s thesis was about the role of the larynx in respiration. The research volunteer sat in a pressure controlled box, had Moffett’s solution administered to the nasal passage and a laryngoscope put in. That’s why I didn’t flinch when you said cocaine - it was very common in the olden days. I guess my experience was a bit unusual. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks for that information on treating a pinhole perf, I never suspected that fat would be used, but that makes sense,

      Yes, I haven't got a medical background, but I seem to remember cocaine being mentioned as part of a local anaesthetic, possibly for teeth in my youth. It doesn't really shock me. So many useful legal drugs are used illegally. Can't think why. The immediate side effects of some I've had, medically are horrid.

    My brother is a surgical nurse here in Pennsylvania, USA. I remember him telling me years ago when he was still a surgical tech that they sometimes had occasion to use cocaine in surgeries, and that whatever form of it they used was green, which surprised him when he first found out. I suppose they give it a distinct color in order to easily identify it.

    The two "caines" commonly used in dental are probably Novocaine and Lidocaine. I remember that one time I was over Lido'd and was biting all over the inside of my mouth cause almost the whole mouth was numb.
    The reason why it would be used at this point (if I were to get drilled in "that one tooth" again) is because the caries would be at the nerve. (Oh noOoOo, root canal time)

    I've had a perforation in my eardrum for some time now. The drum is retracted and stuck to the bone and I believe an infection is hiding where the two are connected. I fasted for about a week which initially triggered an immune response which was smelly discharge and was given drops after multiple rounds of antibiotics failed but the opening never closed, I imagine due to venting of the underlying infection in my middle ear; sometimes I feel it drip when I overdo it on the carbs.
    (had multiple T -tube surgeries as a child due to eustachian tube dysfunction.)
    All this to say, I think sometimes the body deliberately keeps a hole open in the drum due to a middle ear issue.

    • @EmilySmirleGURPS
      @EmilySmirleGURPS 9 месяцев назад

      It's a local drug, in this solution. It does not get used in large quantities, and it's not injected into the blood stream to travel to the brain - that wouldn't numb the tissues. Its injected right near the nerve that needs to be blocked typically.
      I'm not even sure that you'd have to inject it inside the ear, if you were willing to numb half the patients face... facial nerves are nuts and go everywhere.

    Fantasic video as usual Conor! I knew about the cocaine use in nasal surgeries but hadn't heard about it for ears. I have always wondered though...when they administer it nasally or do a sinus pack of cocaine how does the patient not get high or even die? I mean, that's how people take it, through the mucus membrane of the nose, so maybe it's a form that can't be absorbed or something? Such interesting stuff to learn!!❤❤

    • @heatherexcell3078
      @heatherexcell3078 9 месяцев назад +1

      It has to be absorbed by the body, otherwise it wouldn't do anything at all. Like all drugs, the difference is in the dosage. Because you're only trying to numb a very small part of the body, it only takes a very small dose - as long as it's concentrated in that area, at least to start with. When it's absorbed into the whole body gets diluted so much it doesn't have much effect. If the doctor messed up and gave you way too much it would cause problems, but that's true of every medication.

    • @heathercashero6806
      @heathercashero6806 9 месяцев назад

      @heatherexcell3078 Thanks for the reply. Great name 😁😁 That was my other thought, that it was just too small a dose. Surprised that a dose so small can numb so well but not have any other effects. The field of medicine is so fascinating!

    • @heatherexcell3078
      @heatherexcell3078 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@heathercashero6806 It's like adding a tiny bit of dye to a tub of still water - the spot you added it to will be pretty dark to start with, but after a while I you won't even notice the difference. If you want to colour the whole tub you need a lot of dye, but sometimes you just need one particular area to be dark (i.e. numb) for a moment.

    what if you don’t do any of those things but your perforation still hasn’t closed it’s been there I’m sure since 2012 I had surgery to have tubes put in my ear to help me not get ear infections as much and I think it’s from the surgery I remember being in so much pain waking up and even after with the meds bc my my mom said he had to scrap my ear bc I had a lot of dog hair in it and ik you guys are so careful not to touch the ear canal and bc the tubes didn’t fall out properly but I think it was sitting in my ear bc a doctor was able to pull it out with no pain. I know the perforation is still there bc a year ago I got a bad ear infection by getting a little water moving around in the shower ( I usually use cotton balls) and it was also a ruptured ear drum I do believe and I told the doctor my history and how I can’t use certain ear drops bc it sets my ear on fire and ab the perforation wasn’t sure if it was still there and when he looked in my ear he saw it. I just was wondering if it was possible for it to still heal or anything I can do bc my hearing isn’t as good in my left ear and I think it’s bc of it. ( I continued the video and you basically answered everything I asked above ) but if you could still reply and give me any advice that would help so much and I am to afraid to have surgery to fix it I don’t trust any of the ear doctors in my area ( in the us) and you, neel and rhys and Taylor all live in UK sadly.

  • @MSjackiesaunders
    @MSjackiesaunders 4 месяца назад

    When I had a deviated septum repaired back in the early 70s, they used a cocaine spray to numb the area, with the added benefit of shrinking the mucous tissue. At least here in the US, cocaine can be used by doctors under controlled circumstances. It is a telling fact that humans tend to misuse many things for "pleasure." Frankly, I didn't find it at all pleasurable during my surgery. The doctor told me I was a "weeping drunk mess" while I was being operated on! 😊

      The details depend on where you are. In many places it's not available at all; in some places it's a highly regulated prescription medicine. It's produced by pharmaceutical companies to the same standards as all the other medications they make, its just the the distribution is much more tightly controlled.

    Hi. Thanks for your lovely videos. I have a question. Is it OK to use Q tips and hand sanitizer to clean the ears? Thanks 😊

      Are you mental or a troll? I absolutely wouldn't do that. Q tips aren't meant to go in your ears, and hand sanitizer is for your HANDS.
