My son played this song for his 8th grade spring concert. I had no idea it was a solo performance. He worked so hard on it and it was beautiful. One of my proudest and happiest moments of my life.
@@malikjackson8315 That’s fantastic. I hope you enjoy playing the trumpet and continue to practice. My kid plays trumpet for his Highschool marching band.
I hope your performance went well. My brother performed this for judges at a band festival years ago, and although I had heard him practice it at home, I was floored to hear it whole. His tone and execution were flawless, and he treated the piece with such sensitivity. I was very proud of him. He's gone, now, but this song remains in my memory of him as "his song."
Tone, phrasing, intonation, articulation -- magical! One of the world's best demonstrating that even a "simple" piece (performed at varying degrees of musicianship by the rest of us), can be played at a very, very high level.
This beautiful work was one of my father's favorites. I was very young and was always amazed as to how someone could have the strength of breath to perform it. It is still timeless.
I had the privilege of performing this solo my freshman year in High School. Of course never with the perfection of Marsalis but it's a beautiful lullaby, without question.
These are the kind of special people you may visit someday during your stay here on earth. Wynton is one very special person in this category. Listen to him play, listen to him talk, and enjoy.
I played this beautiful piece in middle school. I played the alto sax and my gifted older brother played the solo on the trumpet. This song brings back great memories.
My father was a horn player, good enough for the Ohio State Marching Band in the late '30's, when they devised Script Ohio. He played this song for me when I was a child. I hadn't heard this song for many years, but this morning they played it on CBS Sunday Morning. It immediately connected me with my Dad and brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful!
Beautiful music played by a master of his craft. This was played at my father's funeral as we carried his coffin in. I couldn't think of a more beautiful piece for a beautiful man.
I first heard this song performed on the Jackie Gleason show as a Christmas skit. Since then It's remained one of my favorites. Wynton has done Leroy Anderson proud. His feeling for the piece, both in the execution of fine detail and the languishing on notes that needed to be held for the listener, and his incredibly rich tone. is truly a work of art.
really love this piece-audiences love it-shows off a trumpeter singing a lullaby to the band-and they respnd-if done well-the audience can hear the conversation they're having-Wynton gets the job done well.
Thank you Wynton for recording this-and setting a standaed for not only trumpet spitters [affectionately] but H.S. band directors and their bands-u're the man, man!
A very straight-forward and flawless rendition. Beautiful. I first heard this song played by Rafael Mendez, who is a scary phenomenal trumpeter, and adds a lot of tasteful ruffles and flourishes to this song. It's hard to find a stand-alone recording of him playing this, but it is listed on a full album if you search for it. An old-sounding recording, but still a good listen if you're interested in hearing a nearly forgotten legend.
Having been a trumpet player for a number of years, I believe that he is one of the best to ever pick up a trumpet. He earned Grammys in the same year for both classical and jazz recordings - no small feat for a mere mortal. He does all phases of playing really well and makes it sound easy (which it is not). DJ
Playing this for our concert on December 6th. I'm currently in 8th grade and consider it an honor to play a piece like this, but I do not believe I am quite ready :) Time to get back to practicing
I'd love to say something creative but Yonatan's comment simply cannot be topped. Perfect vowel sound, great musicality, total expressive control. Just tend to wonder why the 16ths are crushed. Tends to be a tradition honored by some of the world's finest players on this piece.
Keep practicing man, its a tough piece, but its an absolute blast... this song captures the trumpet's soul... with its versatility and brightness, its slowness and playfulness and its character as well
Hate to see bland comments about him being "one of the best" of course he is one of the best that goes without question. The only thing we should question is his standing among the greats
The inspired composer and artist are to be congratulated for touching my heart. I've had this song resounding in my head all day. Ahhhhh.......Those pure soft tones from Wynton Marsalis' trumpet send me.
A lot of trumpet players do this make extra room in the piece. Also, I think it's very suiting for the trumpet and makes the piece sound less "muddy" or more "lively". Peace, Rev. EG Wilson
At least you got a little solo. In the Philip J. Lang (original) band arrangement, there's one trumpet part (the solo), the 2nd cornet gets his 2 bars of glory, the 3rd cornet plays 8 bars with the 2nd, and the 1st cornet doesn't play at all - just has cues for the trumpet and 2nd cornet solos.
Majik47, this is one of many 'popular' compositions by the classic middle-America composer, Leroy Anderson (Sleigh Ride, Typewriter Song, Bugler's Holiday, Syncopated Clock and about 100 more - all schmaltz, all very easy listening - he probably invented the term)
@Nabokov50 Mr. Marsalis, whom I've met, by the way...is an artist. He has more than earned the right to interpret any piece he chooses to play in the manner and style he chooses to play it and composers, living and dead are delighted that he does so.
I would say it is time to practice. Our stage band won state every year, until band was canceled. This was easy for an 8th grader stage band student in 1977. At that time we played other styles, our teacher was a trumpet player, and made life hell for us all. I had gone and bought a Schilke 13A4A mouth piece. Keep your 7C for this piece, or learn to relax with the 13A4A. My instructor had a fit when he saw the 13A4A. I guess I was supposed to suffer with a 7C all my life.
My son played this song for his 8th grade spring concert. I had no idea it was a solo performance. He worked so hard on it and it was beautiful. One of my proudest and happiest moments of my life.

I love the way he just lightly touches those triplets! What genius!
I hope your performance went well. My brother performed this for judges at a band festival years ago, and although I had heard him practice it at home, I was floored to hear it whole. 🥺💙
as a former trumpet player, i can tell you this song is very difficult.
@@mmjj69 I was a Trumpet Player as well a long time. Try playing Napoli, that one was a absolutely insane to play
Brings back memories of mom cooking Sunday dinner, and listening to the radio!
Tone, phrasing, intonation, articulation -- magical! One of the world's best demonstrating that even a "simple" piece (performed at varying degrees of musicianship by the rest of us), can be played at a very, very high level.
I love hearing Wynton play this song: my dad played the trumpet and hearing Wynton play this song reminds me of my dad.

Beautiful song. Leroy Anderson is by far one of the best composers ever.
I played this at Clovis, NM high school when our Portales high school played a concert at Clovis in 1954.
Beautiful and soft - the lovliest version of this lovely piece I've ever heard. Captures the dreaminess perfectly.
This and Bugler’s Holiday are two of favorite trumpet song.

Wynton is probably one of the best you can get in both jazz and classical of the 21st century
Incredible sensitivity and control. Wynton, you are a master !!! musician, artist, performer.
I played this for a state solo and ensemble contest. One of my favourite songs ever.
This my fav on utube. I played trumpet for 34 yrs. mostly TAPS for vets funerals. thanks!

Note well Wynton's daring changes of tempo, the way he steps back and forward, lays down, butters the beat, plays the silences with his breath.
This is the best arrangement I've heard; he has great wind control and a beautiful tone. Great job!
It's like someone is making my brain a massage
Super Trumpet Player
Wonderful. Brings a tear to the eye. So beautiful... Brings back so many fantastic memories.
I love hearing such a warm tone on trumpet, with some delicate vibrato. It sounds like a cornet at the start
I love everything about the way he played it. The articulations are so clean and his notes are so precise. It's just perfect
My father's favorite song. Thank you for posting.
Bravo! I love this melody & Wynton Marsalis' rendition.
Wynton's talent is his own, he worked for everything he has, and we can say thank you by listening to this miraculous talent entertain us.
I have an accompaniment of that wonderful piece! I love the interpretation of Marsalis. Such a great musician !
I love this tune and have played it on my trumpet!! Its just so beautiful.
I started practicing this last week and I can already say its one of my favorites🎺
Wonderful, soft, flowing, peaceful, thank you!
Wynton Marsalis you are perfect. Thank you.
really love this piece-audiences love it-shows off a trumpeter singing a lullaby to the band-and they respnd-if done well-the audience can hear the conversation they're having-Wynton gets the job done well.
Beautiful music played on the best horn on the planet!
This is so beautiful; what a skilful play, it is a pure delight listening to this piece of art. Thank you so much for uploading.
The guy's a genius. I've heard dozens of versions of this, none comes close.
Loved every second of this, 5stars baby!
Un artiste à la trompette, Leroy Anderson à la composition. Rien à ajouter tout est dit...
This was my Lion’s Band audition piece and I worked so hard on it. It’s a fun and beautiful piece.
I played this at Hialeah High School....1963....What a treat
Wynton has always said taht "classical training is fundamental" You can really hear it here!!
Awesome, beautiful, and whispy.
Very very nice. Perfect technics. One of my favorit Trumpet-Melodys. Greetings from Germany Andreas
As a trumpet player if there is such a thing wow beautiful and there are some good ones on RUclips
This is definitely one of my favorite Trumpet songs :)
A performance of genius.

Dennis Johnson But he is not a mere mortal
Totally agree. He’s a virtuoso trumpet player.
Do you know any other Songs for trumpets that have that same aura of sleepiness and Relaxation..???Looking for new great pieces to listen to
Oh boy! This is going to be my Solo this year~ I can't wait.
He bring out the subtleties a lot better than me and his sixteenth notes are so clear. Great dynamics. BETTER THAN US ALL
This piece man..so moving
Beautiful Clip. Thanks so much for posting this.
Wynton's performance is gorgeous.
This was so much fun to play
he is with out a doubt the best I have ever heard..
Wynton's GREAT. Check out Doc Severinson's take on this same tune. A fine rendition, too.
it 's just so beautiful.

Thank you Wynton........
So pretty and well done! I agree w/Yonatan and William's comments . . . so soothing. Thank you Malawolf85 for sharing!
Absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you, that's very kind.

This is very sweet piece of music. I just got notes for this, I am really looking forward to play it.
Im learning this song and its such a good song
Damn. That's all I have to say. Damn. That was freakin incredible. I'm decent for my age, but I can only dream of being have as great a player.

and the 10th time to listen to this tonight begins now
My college director just told me I have to solo on this with the band in a few weeks.
Andy Price so I’m taking this as I should be concerned because I’m in 8th grade and I have this solo...
Amazing
We played this for my friends funeral
imurnightmare 20 it was the last thing he played before he passed
That's beautiful.
Ugh :'( This song already makes me sad! R.I.P.
A wonderful gesture. I am sure your friend enjoyed it!
