I like to think of it like this:
Western: I use a shanked bit because they can feel a subtle movement of my hand, but I try to avoid making actual contact whenever possible! I feel connected to my horse when I don't need to use the reins at all!
English: I use the most gentle bit possible on my horse because I feel connected to him when he willingly takes the contact because then he is always aware of what my hands are doing!
I like how you pick on them both equally!

  • @victoriaolender6289

I find western saddles much more practical for something like trails or camping. You can tie or store every gosh darn thing you need on a western saddle to go out for the day either to the saddle itself or in a saddle bag. I think english saddles are great for short rides and doing arena work, but IMO I'd put my money into a western trail saddle if I had to pick.

Ha! You nailed it. I do detect the very slightest, slightest hint of preference for Western and I agree. I've ridden both. When I took a trip to England and splurged on a day session at one of their most prestigious riding stables, the instructor was astonished when I moved my horse with leg. She actually said, "Wow"! I never knew you could do that. However, for my purposes, now at 75-years, gotta say that tacking up with English is SO EASY...even without a groom to assist (although the idea of a groom is very tantalizing.) I just have pad and shim the hell out of it for my Arabs and remember to run the girth strap through the dang loops on the English pad. The easy part is just placing that little light thing on their back.

    • @justgio2711
      @justgio2711 2 года назад +13

Which riding stables was it? Honestly I find it impossible to believe that any riding school in England doesn’t know you can move a horse with your leg (considering it’s usually one of the first things you learn) let alone a “prestigious” one so I’m curious as to which one you went to?

@@lukegaspar1345 You have been exposed to lousy trainers. And they are indeed out there. Sorry you had bad luck. I ride recreationally, and occasionally go to clinics, schooling shows and gymkhanas.
I have a variety of saddles and bridles in my tack room: all purpose, close contact, Dressage, and a side saddle; western pleasure, roping, trail, and a parade saddle; a South American Brazilian saddle and bridle; hunter bridles, Dressage bridles, a double bridle, a baroque bridle and a Bavarian embroidered bridle for SCA events; split ear, futurity knot, bosal... they're all fun and have their purposes! Hmm. Maybe I have a tack addiction... lol!

For those that ride both: maybe try an Australian stock saddle: it's a halfway compromise between Western and English - designed for jackaroos and jillaroos to ride all day, every day. Also, I think we need helmets that are a compromise between cowboy hats and helmets: head protection and a wide stiff fabric brim to keep the sun and rain off.

I used to ride English when I was taking lessons and I did try Western one time. I think I’d like to stick to English riding and even have a go at dressage, simply because it’s better exercise. The posing helps with core stability and using the legs in various exercises also helps to develop muscles in those areas. I wasn’t getting that with the Western riding. The canter seems so much more graceful in English riding.

I also wear a helmet, and let my horses mane and tail grow as long as they can!

As an English rider, I am in total agreement about the use of crops D: But western riders also ride bucking broncos and bulls, and rope livestock, and while I understand the practicality of learning the latter, I hate seeing that in competitions more; the animals all seem so unnecessarily distressed.

My daughter and her 6 year old painted do excellent at English shows. If you’re a great rider you can overcome the bigotry of English judges.

I haven’t been able to ride in 40 years for various reasons but back in the day I rode a pony with an English bridle and a Western saddle. Then, later I had a Tennessee Walker/Morgan mare for many years. This mare was the BEST; she was gaited and did “the walk.” She did best with an old Cavalry saddle and a Western bridle. Any other tack I couldn’t get her to gait as often. I was a kid in the 1960s when my mom got her for me (and Dad) and the whole family trail rode. As for riding style I kinda did a combo of English and Western..mom was hardcore English and Dad more Western. To be fair, Dad & I weren’t the best riders on the planet 😂All of us wore jeans

As a western rider, I can tell she rides English 😂
Long manes, barrel racing, whipping the horse
Loping slow, collected low head, split reins
It describes two completely different horses, yet only a jumper for English. I just found it funny

I ride western but I've nothing against english riding. I do think it is probably much easier to tack up english though. I prefer though because western is more comfortable for me. But jumping would be fun! But this is very true! You nailed it! 🤣

I ride English, and it is easy to tack up with only a saddle and bridle, but when you horse has grass reins, a martingale, Brest plate and bungie it is hard, sooo many clips and buckles and all the sizing has to be perfect and fitting them is a nightmare! And the crazy nose bands are the same! And yes English is very uncomfortable, but jumping is so fun and dressage!
