I will always remember when someone at art college burnt his drawing stating that this action would remain in your memory. It takes a few moments for destruction and only ashes and memory remain.
I had to look up the Yiddish word shmondak which it seems is similar to schmuck and although obscene in Yiddish in English is usually translated as "jerk", that is "stupid, foolish, obnoxious, contemptible or detestable".
You describe Gormley"s Testing a World View as consisting of five figures but I only see four. Did one of the figures leave the room? I think that it is ironic in the extreme that painters almost never win (if they even bother entering) a prize named in honour of a great and innovative English painter. If I look at the Sobey Art Award here in Canada, it seems that the juries of these awards only consider political statements to be "art". This has alienated much of the general public with regards to contemporary art. The tabloids have a field day for good reason. Easy target: like shooting the proverbial fish in a barrel (which may well be a piece by Damien Hirst). When did craftsmanship, and aesthetics and (frankly) talent stop being meritorious? In my opinion, if you have to explain (and explain and explain) a piece of visual art, it is not very successful. A circus indeed.
There are five figures in Gormley's work but only four shown in the photograph. I like your idea that one has left the room. I am in love with two-dimensional art so I agree there should be more awards for painting, drawing, engraving etc. I do like works with layers of hidden meaning and my job is to explain.
Thanks Dr Shafe, for keeping me informed about modern art. 👍
Amazing as usual. Thank you!

Great!
A 25 k Pounds worth prize should be called The Shmondak prize not the Turner - dear Brits...

@@LaurenceShafe You explain extremely well Dr. Shafe. It just seems to me that many of these artists have taken off without a flight plan.
