A 30 year sequel has no business being this good. I loved it!
My thought exactly. What looked like an obvious cash grab sequel 30 years later is supposed to be awful. This movie proved it is possible to make something good if you give the material the respect it deserves.
It felt like a 90s movie and I appreciated it for that. No crazy twists or meta story telling. Just a straight forward action movie. Simple fun like the good old days.
You should've watched this on the biggest screen you can find Jimmy. THIS was made to be watched on the big screen. Watching this in the cinema was one of the greatest experiences ever. It's still good on a smaller screen, but it doesn't come close to this experience. It makes the movie a million times better. One of the best sequels ever made.
That opening scene where the roof comes off the building, that's the real deal. They did that with an F18, the Darkstar was CGI'ed over it. Ed Harris stood there and didn't flinch when it flew right over him.
Yes although the gatehouse was part of the movie's set. Hence the roof coming off.
Yes. But he was in "The Right Stuff" (1983) so he had to BRING IT. That is a great movie - if you have not seen it - I surley do recommend it.
Cuz Ed Harris is him
The roof coming off was not actually scripted but when it happened they decided to keep it in the movie and I'm glad they did.
"Exactly. Rooster's a time traveler."
That got me good.
Whole heartedly agree with you. This one is much better than the first one...
Favorite scenes
1. "It's a nice moment... Don't ruin it..."
2. "You told me not to think..."
3. "Earth..."
This movie was the perfect example of a sequel done right. I enjoyed every minute of it
The actor who plays Hangman also plays a pilot in a excellent movie called Devotion. It is the story of the first black Naval aviator.
Very good true story
He also played the astronaut in Hidden Figures.
@@scorp77snake Yup, he played astronaut John Glenn.
So much better then the first - literally had no business being this good.
I have tidbits...
The actor who plays Bob, is the son of Bill Pullman who played the President in Independence Day.
This movie was filmed before the pandemic and was supposed to release in 2020. Tom Cruise fought against the studios releasing this directly to streaming during the pandemic. When it was released in theaters in 2022 it made BIG amounts of money. For those who saw it in theaters, Tom Cruise tacked on a welcoming message to thank audiences for being patient about the release and that it truly was a movie designed to be seen on a big screen
Val Kilmer is actually doing a bit better health wise now. I believe his cancer is in remission, but his voice will never be what it was. He has a documentary about his career and health struggles, I think on Amazon. His son actually does narration and speaking for him in some voice projects he has been involved with.
Sidenote, I really enjoy your reactions a lot, Jimmy and you will always have a fan in me, because you love Gangsta A$$ so much. She is truly one of the best characters in TWD.
Little background, but Val Kilmer had a very difficult battle with throat cancer that left him virtually unable to speak. His dialogue in the film is actually digitally recreated, as he can't speak loud enough to be captured on camera. The studio execs originally only wanted "Iceman" to be an off-screen ONLY character, but Tom Cruise refused to be in the film without Val Kilmer. Hence why we got that fantastic scene between the two. This film is truly a masterpiece and is one of, if not THE greatest sequels of all time.
Edit: Also, that plane that Maverick and Penny take off in at the end is Tom Cruise's personal P-51 Mustang, arguably the most iconic WW2 American fighter plane.
The faces they are pulling in the planes are real strain. They were in F18s pulling Gs and doing maneuvers while they were filming themselves doing their scenes
Penny was the admiral's daughter referenced in the first movie.
I like it better than the first one too but you need the first one in order to set up this one.
Plus if you grew up with the first one like I did the nostalgia of the second one is part of what makes it so great. I don’t think if I saw the first one recently for the first time the nostalgia factor would be significant or noteworthy. I can’t even describe the energy buzz before top gun maverick started in the theater and then that opening sequence….it was like a collective inhale and connected mind meld. I went to one of those leather seat comfy theaters where they serve you food and beverages (for a date night with hubby). I was 42 and I would say everyone in the theater at that nights showing was couples and groups of couples from like 38-65 years old.
One of the best cinematic experiences of my life. I felt like everyone in the theater got excited or nostalgic about the same thing, like the little gasps or exclamations you can’t help voicing.
That would not of happened if every single person in that theater had not grown up watching top gun. I did because I had two older brothers so it was one of those VHS tapes you watch everyone you stay home sick from school.
So while this reactor said he likes the second one better, me too, I still love the original and the second one lacks so much character and plot depth without the first one.
One of the best sequels ever made. And the best movie of last year. It's just pure entertainment, No agenda and identity politics being shoved down your throat. Just entertainment. Tom Cruise is one of the last movie stars who cares about that. A movie like this is very rare these days.
I'm incredibly happy that this is number 12 of the highest grossing movies of all time and Tom Cruise's most successful movie of his entire career.
Our cinema showed it again recently, and I really regretted not watchin it last year but I went to see it and I was absolutely blown away. I just sat whilst the credits rolled and was left gobsmacked. So much so that it is my favourite movie of all time, which I would never think possible from a movie that was made now. It was just perfecttion. Tom Cruise just knows what to give us and he always delivers. What a man.
Hangman is the guy you definitely don't want coming on the mission, but you absolutely want to be there to save your ass.
Unpopular opinion: kinda wish they let Maverick die saving Rooster.
This movie in IMAX was insane. Closest most people will get to actually flying in one of those birds
I agree the romance was much classier. Playing on Penny being mentioned in the first Top Gun, and having her emerge as the one for Maverick was a nice twist.
I agree minus one issue the young girl playing penny was 6 when the first came out making Mav a pediophile once you work it out. By going that young they needed her to be someone else or an older actress by a decade.
@@charlesmaurer6214or skip a romance
"Ghostrider requesting fly by." "Negative Ghostrider, the pattern is full."
21:07 the sound design is incredible. As a sound guy watching this in the theaters I was blown away. When it was nominated for best sound at the Oscar’s I called this one as the winner immediately.
I agree completely Jimmy
One of the best things about this movie was the homage 4 Iceman/Val kilmer. He has been battling throat cancer for quite a while
Couple of notes. Penny is the Admiral daughter mentioned in first movie. Thw actor playing BOB is Bille Pullman son continues the family tradition. Last the 33 rounds left in last fight is an omage to the 33 years since first movie at time of filming
i like your reactions maybe more than anyone.. thanks.. another great one.. your honest opinions shine through
when talkin bout goin back to jennifer connelly “i cant imagine why tf he wouldnt”.. you funny man 😂
Ok idk why the algorithm recommended your channel, but :30 in u have yourselves a fan. Yes!! There r movies and then there r movies. Those who recommended watching it on a larger screen, thank you.
Enjoyed the content, can’t wait to go through your other reactions and looking forward to seeing more.
This movie got a thumbs up from my nephew a Air Force Top Gun Pilot he said he went with 2 other top gun pilots to see it
There are a lot of Former Naval Aviators on Social Media who will tell you from the viewpoint of an aviator, there are a lot of things wrong with this film. But then they say as a fanboy, they love this movie. You are telling me a B-2 bomber could not hit that target, why not send more cruise missiles to take out the sams. Where was the CAP of F-35 fighters who would have deployed to cover Maverick on his way home. Still a great movie, I have it on a tablet to watch every time I fly.
Yeah, no sorrys necessary. I'm an 80s kid and only liked the OG. This one is better in every way. Filmed better, better stakes, better action. Phenomenal flick.
Jennifer Connelly still 🔥🔥🔥
Yep!!! She's Fire.
So glad I got the bell so I can watch this incase yt or someone got pissy about it again.
Jimmy - I don’t know what your previous “oh, Jesus” record was, but you certainly destroyed it in this one.
I liked the first film, but I LOVE this one. Cheers.
You’re a legend. Love the reaction! 🤘🏽
First movie since covid came that I went to see in a theater. Was really great on the big movie screen.
I will hit the like button for the "Thats what she said!"
top 5 fighter pilot movies. top 3 sequels. top 5 tom cruise movies.
I was on a carrier when the first one came out and we laughed our asses off😊
Wayyyyy better as you said bro!
Not even controversial...this is much better than Top Gun and I love that movie!
One of the best fighter movies ever made loved it
I just did not like love story. I would not have. But a daughter he had with Charlie owned the bar, and the friction of daughter/dad depth vs love interest. And at the end of movie its them hugging and coming together. I think Goose’s son and her meeting during the film would’ve been a spark, with well-written convo regarding Maverick. But a great film!
Also if like Ed Harris - Season 1 of Westworld is amazing, just season 1 as the show falls apart slowly afterwards. But the cast is bonkers, great writing - Ed Harris, Anthony Hopkins, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Rachel Evan Woods, etc
it's on here
To my mind this is the only time has even matched the original never mind surpassed it. I have no doubt that in the future this will be held in higher regard than the original.
24:59 "Let it go, Topper. The King is gone."
Gotta say I hated almost every minute of this movie. Probably from the Oscar hype it got before I saw it. Felt like a Marvel movie. Low stakes, over reliance on nostalgia for the original, and a lot of unnecessary storylines. Maybe it’s unfair to judge it so harshly , but when you see what a legacy “sequel” like Prey can do, or even Scream 5, and compare it to this … just so disappointing.
The biggest difference from the first Top Gun movie is the story. The first one didn't really have a story. Top Gun Maverick had a really good story.
Saw it back in 77, when it was called Star wars....but yes, still a great movie. I do prefer the original though....the F-14 Tomcat was front and center and the real star of the movie
One thing you can count on in a Tom Cruise movie is that Tom Cruise’s character won’t die, no matter how impossible the mission.
I'm open to those hangman being cast as Cyclops rumors
I take that back thee best
Maverick Top Gun didn't have the extra extra cheese put on the first movie.
After watching Top Gun: Maverick I'm convinced there's only one man who could make a good Terminator sequel worthy of the first two and that man is Joseph Kosinski. Unfortunately, all the terrible sequels have killed off the franchise. What could have been...
Easy now. There can't be one without the other 👍🇺🇸
the script for this movie sucks, but it's fancy flying :)
Always thought the original Top Gun was the most overrated action film of the 80s. And I’m not some young buck with no appreciation of that era, I’m an old dude who grew up in that era. Even compared to other action movies from then, it’s not that good, but for some reason it held this high status and I have no idea why. Actually I have an inkling of an idea why, it was the soundtrack. The original Top Gun soundtrack is top tier. The movie itself is mid as hell.
The sequel is just better straight up in every single way. Top Gun is a good soundtrack. Top Gun Maverick is a good movie.
Well... that's, like... just your opinion, man.
I still think the first Top Gun was a better movie, with amazing production value for its time. Maverick was great as well.
Final dogfight is full of nonsense. F-14 against two Su-57? Impossible
It's not the plane, it's the pilot.

31:49 wtf!?! Did you just co-sign for Hangman?? That dude was at warp level 16 on the douchebag scale.
This movie is terrible. If someone tells you it was better than the original, immediately walk away and never speak to that person again because they are cookoo
You can’t really compare. The original was filmed in 1985 and they realism they used back then was amazing for its day
idc about the realism. It's just a drag.
It was one of two movies I waited for after COVID. I do see 3 problems with the film. The guy with glasses is not qualified to be a military pilot. Penny was way to young as she was 6 or younger when Maverick went blalistic with the admiral's daughter in one. Third while dificult for the 2 person joyride the Mustang was not a Navy plane and should have been one. WWII the navy didn't buy many trainer versions but a Corsair would make more sense and a few 2 seaters were built. The mustang was an Army/Air Force plane and would violate his Navy pride.
