      This is why I’m upgrading from an RP4 pro to an rp5. There’s a lot of reviewers saying it’s not that big of an upgrade and whatnot, but really, that new display is already more than significant enough for me.

As time has gone on, and after getting a Anbernic SP I'm certainly convinced that 4:3 is ideal for retro gaming. I ended up getting the Odin 2 Mini but I'm considering a Pocket Mini and possibly selling the Odin. Its a huge dillema. People say this device is amazing for 4:3 content but I am yet to see a reviewer mention the fact that you can in fact use widescreen cheats on basically all consoles above dreamcast even PS1. So all of the consoles that this has the additional power to run, will have widescreen cheats available. Some games even support 16:9 natively on dreamcast and others. So all of these games will all probably be better on the RP5 anyway.
    Please test 16:9 widescreen cheats on all emulators when your RP5 arrives. And mention it on your next RP5 Mini video because most people forget this detail.
    Love you videos by the way, keep it up!

    • @azenyr
      @azenyr 2 месяца назад

      @adinwalls Dreamcast is one of my most played consoles, so I kinda know Flycast very well. I should remind people that Flycast has two distinct widescreen hacks, and some games work perfectly with one of them, while others work perfectly with the other one. But I can say that 99% of dreamcast games work perfectly at 16:9 with one of those two hacks. Some dreamcast games actually have a widescreen mode toggle inside the game itself, so no hacks needed.
      But newer consoles like the PS2 and Gamecube seem to also work pretty well with 16:9 screens. I've tried many of them on my high end android phone and got very good results. But I have not tested many games.
      I just think that above a certain performance threshold, 16:9 might be a good investment, but I am never sure.
      This dilemma is real, and I just can't decide between both. I have told myself that I can't buy both 😂

    • @MrFloyd-jf6fh
      @MrFloyd-jf6fh 2 месяца назад

      Many widescreen hacks look bad though, cause even if the screen is properly rendering the game in 16:9, the game devs never designed the edges of the screen to be seen in that aspect ratio. I've turned off widescreen hacks in several games because I was tired of seeing environments where the edges aren't fully modeled, and menus where the sides bug out because they were meant to be cut off

    That screen quality is worth it IMO. I have a 4 inch screen device and realistically .3 inches smaller is not a big deal. True blacks, faster pixel refresh, vivid colors, higher resolution. • @adinwalls
      @adinwalls  2 месяца назад +1

      I think that’s the gamble that Retroid took, quality over size. And I’m stuck between wishing they had a larger screen and absolutely loving the quality of it. Gonna play it for a week and see how I feel.

      @@adinwalls speaking for myself, my vision forces me to use reading glasses with all handhelds, whether it’s a 7+ inch screen or 2 inches. So for me .3 inch isn’t very significant. But yeah, bigger would’ve been better aesthetically on that form factor, but apparently a 4 inch AMOLED 4:3 screen doesn’t currently exist. If you look at what the upcoming Aya Neo DMG has for example, which has a similar screen but with ~8:7 aspect, I suspect all these small AMOLEDs are being cut from the same process, so options are a bit limited. I’m a big OLED fan, love it on my Steam Deck OLED, so I’m stoked to see a pocket emulation device with that screen quality. Thanks for the nice preview video, Adin.

    I'm guessing that Retroid wanted the Mini to have as much parity with the RP5 as possible, so they opted to go with a smaller screen so it could have an AMOLED display like the RP5, rather than opt for a 4" IPS panel instead. It's a shame that there isn't a 4" 4:3 AMOLED panel available yet.
    Personally, I would have taken a 4" IPS display over the 3.7" AMOLED display. As much as I love gaming on an OLED screen, I still think that screen size should take precedent over panel technology when it comes to designing a handheld device. But I know there are plenty of people out there who are totally fine with the tradeoff if it means they get that tasty OLED experience, and another company like Anbernic is bound to release their own device that's on par with or perhaps better than the RP Mini when it comes to horsepower, but has a larger 4:3 LCD instead.

    So my only complaint with this device... Well, it's not even a compaint. It's more of a hypothetical thing, if anything.
    The retroid pocket 2S, right. This is obviously kinda like the more premium version of that system. But it's literally twice the price. Which is fine, cause of what you're getting, but the rp2S is a good budget option and I don't want them to stop making the 2S because it's still the best device you can get for under 100 dollars.

I really hope you can make a video where you help someone decide between this and the odin 2 mini also mini is your current favourite i assume so it would be perfect comparison in terms of power (i really want to see battery comparison between two) if bigger device lasts longer then i would go for odin 2 mini and if this lasts longer then rp for the win !

    • @adinwalls
      @adinwalls  2 месяца назад

      I am of the opinion that this isn't even in competition with the Odin 2 mini, because even though it's a premium priced device, the Odin 2 mini is still $139 more! To me the RG Cube and Retroid's existing devices are a more relevant comparison - and possibly the RG406V. And, yes, the Odin 2 mini is my current daily driver mostly because of build quality and it's the most powerful Android device I own. And it will win against the RP Mini everyday in my opnion.
