Well the difference is that, the short weren't payed off yet and the short squeeze is still happening right now. The shorts aren't forced to close till the hedge funds get a margin call. GME still has potential to reach a high $ amount maybe even higher than VW but what to I know
The definition of shorting is a bit off, you can lose an infinite amount of money if the stock keeps going up, not just your initial buy in. AKA if you borrow the stock at $100 and it goes to $1000 you have to purchase it at $1000 in order to return it. As in you spend $900 MORE than initially intended. Shorting is the only way you can lose infinite money, if you just buy in normal you can only lose your initial investment.(unless you're leveraged but that's a whole different thing)
