    Pro tip from a painter- try to get that plastic as tight as possible when masking it. The less folds and creases in the plastic the less spots for dirt to hide and blow out onto your panels. Also for the tight spots that are known for bridging , try investing in lift tape.

      What is lift tape?

    • @bowlofsoup12
      @bowlofsoup12 2 года назад +8

      @@dirtyharry5878 flexible tape that has a thin plastic edge that is designed to go under weatherstripping. Slide the plastic end under the rubber, then pull up, that will pull the rubber off the panel ever so slightly to allow material to get under it. Thus preventing bridging and also prevents clear coating peeling down the road.

    Now let's see you do it to a person's car or truck that has been driven . ( paint chips , some clear coat coming off.) Not every one has a care with perfect paint to start with. We need a few videos showing how to prep for that stuff.

    • @andrewjohn6853
      @andrewjohn6853 5 лет назад +8

      Paint chips and the final clear protective layer coming off are not the results of a car that has been driven. I'll give it to you on one of them, paint chips are sometimes unavoidable, depends where you live and what surface you travel on. But final coat coming off is more a sign of poor care, old age of vehicle before 2 stage paint jobs, or errors in preparing the paints resulting in failure. In this case it's not a fair example that someone hasn't washed their vehicle regularly, clay bar with wax/seal. That's not a car that's been driven, it's called neglect. I'm hardly going to expect a 35 year old woman that spent too long on the beach to go in for a skin treatment and come out not looking like the prune she entered as.

      I'd like to know the exact same thing. I am replacing a fender on my Silverado and would love to just paint dip instead of paying to get the part painted. Seems awesome if I can just dip it instead of paying for paint jobs. Or... Doing this to a brand new vehicle and when I go to sell it just remove the dip and let it shine like just rolled off the lot.

    • @brianhaygood183
      @brianhaygood183 4 года назад +6

      @@pointblank2910 It varies a lot depending on how thick you apply it, what kind of weather exposure you have, etc. In Texas, I've got some wide plasti-dip black stripes. After 7 years they were looking pretty bad. I remasked the same area and sprayed another two coats from an aerosol can, and they look as good as new. Plasti-dip does a great job of leveling itself out, and rewetting itself, so old stuff combines well with new stuff as long as it is clean. One thing I don't see mentioned much that helps is removing the masking tape as soon as you finish the last coat. By removing the tape while the dip is still wet, it gives nice clean edges. The alternative is to cut through the dip once it is dry, which just takes a lot more work. If you let it dry and just pull off the tape, you will be pulling up the plasti-dip with it. If that ever happens, put the tape back down, spray a new coat over the tape line, and remove the tape while the dip is wet.

    Thinking of doing this for my van. Your kit looks great but I've only seen it applied on seemingly perfect, smooth car bodies. My van may have a slight dent or chip here and there. I'm planning on cleaning/degreasing, sanding down uneven surfaces, applying putty wherever to smooth out the surface, sanding it down again, apply primer, and then base coat and clear coats to finish. Where does your kit fit in to this process?

    • @josephoberlander
      @josephoberlander 11 месяцев назад

      @@singer6402 The kit assumes that you have at least proper primer on the vehicle. So all of that is "prep work". Ugh. Yes, it's a headache, but days or weeks of prep on weathered/damaged panels and going slow results in very good results.

    Hey Fonzi
    Now that you mentioned the gaps between panels. How does it actually look like in there ( spraythrough / coating wise ) after you spray the car? Where does the paint stop? Would love to see some "behind the gaps" video because you never see that, only shots with closed doors.
    And how do you get the door handles and the area behind it coated with enough layers?
    AND can how is it to spray gloss topcoat on this?

    • @josephoberlander
      @josephoberlander 11 месяцев назад

      Most pros recommend removing all hardware that you can reasonably get to. For mirrors, most are also just a plastic cap on the back side and gently using a trim removal tool will pop it right off. Mud flaps, tail lights - anything that is held in with a bolt or two. This may also include some of the chrome work such as grilles and covers, depending on the vehicle. My Mustang, for instance, has rear panel on the trunk lid that is plastic - with the logo on it. It's about 8 small bolts to remove, but comes off easily. With it removed, it's dead-simple to handle the trunk lid. Same with the marker lights - a couple of clips and they pop right out.

      Same bro cause I wanna dip my truck but it needs some working and I was wondering if we could just spray it over regular automotive primer cause every car in these videos have clear coat and I wanna see if it makes the difference if the vehicle is clear coated or just regular primer

    • @andrewbanuelos5314
      @andrewbanuelos5314 5 лет назад

      Should be fine, just wet sand with 1500/2000 grit paper on primer so the surface is smooth

    • @ed.4492
      @ed.4492 5 лет назад

      1500/2000grit is too fine and you'll be sanding for ever. Start sanding with a 600 and go to a 1000 if you really want to. It's primer, and the plastidip is thick, so you won't notice any small blemished if you leave them.

      Gizawar in between coats we just refill it. When we change colors we usually run Naphtha paint thinner through it and wipe it down. When we are finished, we again run Naphtha through it and leave all the parts separated to air dry.

    So I have just recently started watching these videos and Im really interested and excited to start dipping on my own. One question I have right now is I see in a lot of the videos that you spray right over the emblems of cars and they don't look taped/masked off and then in the final shots the emblems are not dipped but instead are in the standard chrome. Ive watched your video on spraying emblems and and I see you can just peel it away? do you ever run into the bridging problem on the emblems. To me (who has never done this before) it just seems like it would be all to easy to be peeling the dip off of the emblem but then it start taking the dip on the surface of the car with as you do it. Obviously I would use extremely care and go slow while peeling it off but do you ever run into that problem I described or is does it always just peel away with simply ease?

    You should always wash a car from the top down, lots of gritty sand, dirt, salt etc. can be on the sides of your car. And that grit will embed itself in whatever mit or whatever you are washing your car with and will put little scratches in your clear coat. Washing from the top down can help minimize where those scratches occur.
