The First Night in the Grave

Abu Hakeem Bilal Davis Lecture Points:
The night every one of us should be extremely concerned about and ponder over.
The hadīth detailing what occurs at the time of death and the events that take place in the grave.
The journey of the believer vs that of the disbeliever.
The last fitnah the believer will be exposed to.
The meaning of the statement of Allāh, “Allāh will keep firm those who believe, with the word that stands firm in this world, and in the Hereafter.” [Sūrah Ibrāhīm 14:27]

Preparing for this night
The squeezing of the grave.
The warning that comes with grey hair.

*Important side note regarding the Thumbnail:* Islam forbids erecting structures over graves, and commands that any such structures should be knocked down. But it is permitted to put a marker on the grave so that the family and friends of the deceased will know where it is. However, this marker should not be a structure or anything else that is not allowed in sharee’ah.
1 - With regard to the prohibition on erecting structures over graves, the evidence for that is as follows.
It was narrated that Jaabir said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade plastering over graves, sitting on them and erecting structures over them.
Graves should be simple and without any fancy or extravagant decoration. Furthermore, it is not permissible to write verses of the Holy Qur’an on the headstones of graves due to the fear of it being disrespected.

Ash shaykh bin baz said in fatawaa islamiyyah, it’s permitted to erect the grave (Ya’ni add more dirt on top of it) to the width of one handspan in order to distinguish it from the ground and a grave.
