Personally I love how, for a large part of the movie, the movie sort of leads us down the road of 'Hiccup completely takes after Valka', but then you're reminded of how brave, selfless and loyal Hiccup is and realize how much he takes after Stoick as well. Also, something that is easily missed is that Stoick didn't necessarily want to be chief when he was young either. Remember the conversation he had with Gobber near the beginning of the first movie... "Even as a boy I knew what I was, what *I had to* become. Hiccup is not that boy." Stoick knew that as the son of the chief he would become chief himself one day. As a young boy Stoick accepted the fact that he *had to* shoulder that burden and responsibility despite possibly wanting something different for himself. That's a big part of the reason as to why Stoick is disappointed in Hiccup at the start of the first movie. Hiccup had established a pattern of irresponsible behavior where he'd go out to fight Dragons despite being woefully underqualified to do so, thereby endangering himself and others, and causing damage to the village. We understand that he did this because he wanted to belong and to make Stoick proud, but the reasons he himself gave for doing it was that he thought dragon-fighting was cool and because he wanted to get a girlfriend, both of which came off as selfish and careless. By the end of the first movie he proved to Stoick that he really was looking out for the good of the entire village, and Stoick has come to see the true potential Hiccup has as a leader and protector. The problem is that Hiccup doesn't see those things in himself. He doesn't think he can even begin to measure up to his dad, simply because of how great and legendary a man Stoick is, and he's scared of the responsibility. Only after Stoick's sacrifice does Hiccup truly realize that becoming chief isn't about whether he wants the job or not, it's about love, responsibility and self-sacrifice. As far as the father-son relationship goes the first movie is about Stoick learning to understand Hiccup, and the second movie is about Hiccup learning to understand Stoick.

Jonsi's music never misses. "Where No One Goes" is an absolute banger. The opening scene with Hiccup and Toothless, the animation and music, always makes me mad this film came 3rd in rankings for the Oscars.
Djimon Hounsou (from gladiator among other things), played such an incredible villain in this it was incredible. The dragon movies have the best music in anything animated.

I saw this in the theatre, and the whole audience, children and adults, was just silent for like a solid 30 seconds afterwards trying to process what had happened. You just don't expect it at all. This is just such a good series. I look forward to your reaction to the third film! There is also a HtTYD, animated series, set somewhere between the first and second film. I've only watched the first couple of seasons, but I enjoyed it for the expansion of the world. I don't know if you'd want to react to it, but it's worth checking out just as something light to watch in your spare time :) You learn a lot more about the various dragon species as Hiccup and the gang travel, filling out that map we see at the start of this film. Again, I only saw the first couple of seasons. I know there are more, but I can't speak to whether or not they continue to be entertaining.

Drogos dragons design is based of an elephant. The staff he uses is inspired by the ones that people use to abuse and 'train' elephants irl.Just like elephants the dragon was beated and abused if it didn't listen to Drogon as young and probably didn't dare to fight back when it grew. It's cruel💔
And funny you said that. It's actually based on a book we're the book is for kids. And the book the dragons are nice and peaceful. But you how that goes as far as plot in movies.

Also the writer was influenced by Star and joke how he as not happy with the last movie and wanted to do better with his.

I love this movie I can relate with Hiccup my father also died suddenly in front of me and this movie and Coco helped me to grieve for him.

The movie is sad because hiccup finally got reunited with his mother but lost his father in the process
