I have no idea if this is up to date but in 30 minutes you seriously answered every question that literally every other "EXPLANATION" video on what exactly gathering is FAILED to do, in about 1/3 of the time and about 1000000% more clearly.

Neat visual detail with fishing - once you've cast, you can type /sit and you'll pull out a little stool/chair to sit on, and then you can keep recasting while seated. Doesn't impact the fishing at all, but it's a neat detail anyway.

In depth? All they did was add spells that make the low RNG higher and added in quests where you fucking gather - something you're already doing in the first place. God people are retarded.

Az, I know this video is getting old, but thank you so much for going into the details on gathering. This is one of the best beginner guides I've come across. You were very clearly about how it works, and covered the important details in a clear and concise manner. I just recently started this game, and while I knew some of this information, there were details I had not caught on to yet. Thanks for keeping this up and available!

There's a faster way to switch between your crafting/gathering classes. Under the box where it lists all of the jobs that you have gear sets saved to, if you drag your mouse over one of the jobs you can click and drag the job icon to a key bind so all you have to do is press one button to switch between all of your classes.
I highly recommend creating a shared hotbar off to the side of your screen and key binding all of your jobs. It's way faster.

Ok i'm very late to this video by now, but as a side note or 2, you can use /sit while fishing for the extra kick of immersion and fishing also has a lot more going later on, for e.g.: different fishes have different strength values visulized by how hard your rod is twitching when a fish is on the hook. You have to learn this differences and use proper skills to your advantage then. Also different fishes need special bait, weather conditions and day/night on top of time windows. And if this isn't even enough there is later on also spear fishing and you can fish trophys if you're into housing and have an aquarium set up to place these trophys (or sell them for buttloads of money). I just wanted to illustrate how bloody deep these crafting/gathering systems are.
Watch an guide on Crafting and Cross Skills and you see this is a level of perfection that every MMO should sport these days. And don't think its all fine a shiny but crafting is in MMOs useless on level cap. Wrong, very wrong in case of FF14 not only can you craft the best looking Glamour Gear (if you're into that), each patch brings new recipies for the actual content to match that and i see each day Tanks or DPS in FULL crafted gear to raid the HARDEST! content in FF14 on top of the fact that crafting is the best source for money.
Yes it's time consuming, but its fun and rewarding and thats how it should be and not like WoW's after thought inbetween content drought with little to no effect to your actual content you try to conquer.
For everyone starting out now at FF14, as AZ mentioned in the video stay on top of your MSQ (Main Story Quest) but i recommend to make a break after level 20 (when you open up the Grand Company and got your first mount). The Grand Company "GC" provides daily supply deliveries to be fullfilled by you for a big boost of EXP for each proffesion you turn in the requiered materials.(For e.g. Turn in 20 copper ore and get XXXX EXP for Mining) You also earn Company Seals wich can be turned in for hour long EXP buffs to crafting/gathering to speed up the proccess pretty hefty. After unlocking the GC start leveling your profession, take your time do all of them to match your current level. Then go back to MSQ for the next 10 level and repeat it. But be aware its a long journey this way but you will not regret it in the long run when you finished the MSQ @lvl70. It may take 2-3 weeks more time (trust me you don't miss out on content at all then every raid is still up to date due to other daily/weekly systems and this for you will have 0 trouble to get everything done even old content is still visited regulary by me for daily or weekly milestones). So take your time don't rush it for the sake of raiding or stuff like that. This is not WoW, FF14 rading is only the smallest part to the game (still one of the best part i admit) but the outside world provides so much content that you will feel totally overwhelmed if you just rush your way to cap. Enjoy your stay and take your time is my advice!

FF14 has the best crafting/gathering system I've seen in an RPG. It's actually involved, but not in a bad way. It's engaging in a way that makes you want to keep doing it. I think this is a model that other developers should pay close attention to. No more channel fests, no detached companion fetch quests, no more two job limits. This is a dream for people like me, who enjoy being good at crafting.

You know that awkward moment when playing. Just listening to a tip guide. All because haven't played the game in the last 5 years. Suddenly get reminded that you can level FASTER by doing gathering quests. Instead of going around mining nodes. Which I was doing. All to set up to be done with a Miner Quest before getting it and to level up to get that quest when it comes.
I smacked myself in the head on that.

For people who got stuck lile me skipping everything, it's is "Prospect+" meaning Prospect is on. Never search the map where it says the mineral deposites are located, instead search the bluffs of the edge of the map and around rocky hills for the pickaxe signs.
I ran around for hours trying to look for those pickaxes and got the wrong digspots getting lightning shards north of the area that suggested east, but west of the town on the other hand, south of the actual location and west to the settlement it suggest on the map to find Copper ores.
And to think, all of this just to know where to mine for minerals deposites while using the other one to gather wood, just to build things with smithing, just to be able to equipt materia skills. Too rediculous, I say.

I wish I had came across this video 3 years ago when I tried out FFXIV for the first time. Back then I kept asking my friends how the fuck do I even do professions, and they just said "first you unlock the professions with quests and then you just put on the tool to activate the profession and go gather stuff!". One of my retail wow friends just convinced me to give FFXIV another try, and while the game is updating I decided to try to figure out how to do these damn professions. I checked out written guides and a bunch of videos and just got annoyed, because none of them explained how to actually get started. And then I found this video. You actually explained how to get started, and as soon as my game is updated I'm gonna go test it out. I seriously got my black mage to 52 back in 2021 and all of my professions are just level 1, because I couldn't figure out how to do anything at all. It was one of the reasons why I gave up on the game, because I enjoy doing professions and nobody would tell me how to actually do the things.

Good Stuff. when I played the game a year ago, I was a omnicrafter (all 8 disciplines maxed out and nearly top gear on each).
However, the only gathering class I had even up there was Mining. I got Mining to level 62, but just couldn't grind out to 70. It's the most time wasting, tedious thing ever to max out Gathering, as experienced players will know.
That's why there are not so many gathering masters out there in the game. I was in a Free Company of 400 members, and we only had 1 player to max out even 2 of the 3 gathering disciplines.
In the 400, I was one of only 3 players to have maxed out all 8 crafting jobs, and the only one with every crafting book of recipes.
I recall that the max level Items in the game when I was playing were like 370-375. While those Items were tedious to get through the Deltascape and quests like those, where you have to go beat tons of hard bosses in group and just hope you got the right drop from the boss to trade out.
I was crafting weapons and armor about 5-10 levels under the max provided by those insane quests for my free company members.
I would strongly advise against Trying to max out the gathering jobs. I wasted many hours just getting 1 of 3 there. I don't know how fishing is, but if it and botany are anything like mining, you'll wind up pressing buttons tens of thousands of times over many hours, just to get one job.
I'd get all 3 to 50th level max, do not go for more. After 50, the leveling is so slow, even with the special quests and tribal stuff.

How do you get to the different areas in the game in order to get these "gathering" skills? Yes, I am a noob. I got botany but I can't find fishing and mining at all.

You need to go to the other cities' guilds. Fishing is in Limsa Lominsa and Mining is in Uldah.

I did not pay much attention to your FF 14 videos before but this one demonstrates that the game has great depth to professions. Wish WoW had that too. I too want to try this game if I can just ignore the anime style of the characters and some parts of the UI that looks like from a space themed sci-fi game.

+WoW-Stories It doesn't look like that in game. Where Wow reminds me of a cartoon in every aspect ff landscapes look real an your toon an the dimensions of it somehow look more real than WOW

+sheriwhispers Thanks for the comment. Among all the games I have played or watched gameplay videos, I like WoW's graphics the most. I don't really like "realistic" type of graphics most FPS or RPG games have been using lately. I mean I don't like that art style much. Still, I do want to give FF 14 a try especially after learning how detailed and fun their gathering system looks.

Is it worth leveling all 3 first before moving onto all the crafting jobs?

If you are buying all your materials for Crafting it can become extremely pricey as you level up. Especially when it concerns HQ items. Gathering will decrease yoir costs of crafting anf if you choose to sell what you craft bring near 100% value on the items (materials can easily cost more than the finished product in many cases). As well as if you manage to gather HQ items then craftin into HQ will greatly increase value. It is a very very good place to start when looking into proffesions! I personally prefer Gather as i find it relaxing and fun.
I hope this will help you out!
      Best of luck!
