20 years ago today... Every man and woman on that flight who chose not to simply accept their fate, who chose to stand and fight against impossible odds, who chose to sacrifice themselves to deny these insane zealots their dreams of fire and paradise... Every one of them died a hero. Every firefighter, every cop, every medic and first responder, the jarheads and grunts at the Pentagon, who gave their lives in the valiant attempts to rescue the imperiled. They earned their place in memory eternal.
    9-11-01 - 9-11-21
    "Let's Roll"
Stand Up and Bring the Ship Down...

The passengers aboard 93 didn't know how many planes would hit their marks that day. But they knew one that wouldn't. These weren't Navy SEALs, they weren't cops or federal agents. They were American citizens like you or me. If my time comes under such circumstances, I pray I can face the end with half the courage they displayed that day.
Godspeed, you magnificent bastards. Wherever you are now, know that you aren't forgotten, and your sacrifice wasn't in vain.

I don't know whether the pilot was killed or he chose to crash the plane , but Leslie's version of the facts is the more romantic one: "sometimes suicide isn't a sin!"

    • @krisaaron5771
      @krisaaron5771 9 месяцев назад +1

It wasn't "suicide" -- it was a fight to the death for America.
The terrorists made the terrible mistake of thinking Americans are weak because we live in a rich country. But we're rich because we chose democracy, not tyranny.
We, the people, took Flight 93 down! And those who choose fear and terror still -- and always will -- live in the sewers of civilization.

I remember Toby Keith tried (as much as his skills allowed) and got a lot of airtime in 2002-3. Maybe Leslie was too late to hit the zeitgeist or something, but this is just so so so much better. This song is what those Americans deserve. We should still never forget that a literal random sample of us chose heroic death when the choice was presented. And, not only did they choose it, but they were clearly better at effecting it than a hand-picked and trained group of terrorists who were attempting to do the same (from their own perspective).

Wow, a lot has been added since last time I was here. I have visited the memorial site several times
( as I live in PA ) and the evidence that has been uncovered since that day does add some detail.
However, as written, with what was known at the time, I can find no fault in the song. Some
specific details may have turned out to be a bit different, but the causes and effects, and the
bravery of both the pilots and the passengers in dealing with the hand they had been dealt
    is presented perfectly.

She took off from Newark on a warm autumn day,
    With forty-five travellers and crew.
    They all were unarmed at the will of the law;
    Security passed them all through.
An hour into flight-time, four Arabs jumped up --
Two Ahmeds, Ziad and Sa'eed --
Announced a hijacking and waved knives around
    (Razorblades, box-knives and steak-knives they'd found),
    And a box that they swore was a bomb up and down;
They thought that was all they would need.
Flight 93 no more will fly.
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky:
You might not survive, but at least you can try.
Stand up and bring the ship down.
CeeCee the stewardess had a cell-phone,
And called up her husband to say:
    "The plane has been hijacked. We'll do as we're trained;
    Be quiet and humbly obey.
They'll d***er for money or some social cause.
    The government surely will pay.
They'll put us out somewhere and leave with their score,
Or maybe police will come catch them and more.
That's always the way this has been done before.
With luck, I'll be home in a day."
Flight 93 no more will fly.
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky:
You might not survive, but at least you can try.
Stand up and bring the ship down.
Next was Mark Bingham, who had a phone too,
And used it to call up his Mom.
He said they'd been hijacked by "three foreign men"
Who had knives and said they had a bomb.
But some of the passengers plotted, he said,
To take back the plane as it flew.
"But first tell me, Mom, is it true what they say?
That three other airplanes were hijacked today,
Flown straight into buildings and blew them away?"
His mother cried, and said: "It's true."
Flight 93 no more will fly.
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky:
You might not survive, but at least you can try.
Stand up and bring the ship down.
Jeremy Glick called his wife on the phone,
And told of the bomb and the knives.
He said: "If these stories we're hearing are true,
We might as well fight for our lives."
His wife told him: "Yes, the World Trade Center's****,
    And maybe the Pentagon too."
He left the phone hanging, then came back and said:
"We've nothing to fight with, and may wind up dead,
But we've voted to stand up and fight them instead,
And we might keep them from getting through."
Flight 93 no more will fly.
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky:
You might not survive, but at least you can try.
Stand up and bring the ship down.
Thomas Burnett phoned his wife several times,
Reporting the course of the fight.
He said: "One man's been stabbed, and we can't reach the c***pit,
But somehow we'll alter the flight.
We've guessed that the target is likely the White House,
And if we fail, we'll surely die.
We've nothing to fight with except our bare hands,
But we'll keep on trying until the plane lands
One way or the other. We've taken our stand.
My darling, I love you. Goodbye."
Flight 93 no more will fly.
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky:
You might not survive, but at least you can try.
Stand up and bring the ship down.
Jason the pilot could hear the whole tale.
He'd signaled as well as he could.
He saw that the terrorists still held the c***pit --
And one way to stop them for good.
He watched while the passengers battled and died,
And knew that no help would be found.
The guard was distracted. Just one chance to win.
There's one case where suicide isn't a sin.
He weighed all his chances. He said: "Auger in!"
And drove the ship into the ground.
Flight 93 no more will fly.
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky:
You might not survive, but at least you can try.
Stand up and bring the ship down.
Flight 93 hit the ground at full speed,
And no one aboard her survives.
But the White House still stands, and a few thousand folks
Can thank those aboard for their lives.
There's no guarantee, when the Bad Guys come in,
That they won't kill you all to a man.
So when some fanatics are out to have fun,
There's nowhere to hide and there's nowhere to run.
Then pray that the law lets you carry a gun,
But fight back however you can.
Flight 93 no more will fly.
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky:
You might not survive, but at least you can try.
Stand up and bring the ship down.

How can anyone not like this song. The pilot is a symbol for all who fought and died to save their capital and their Capitol. They all knew they would die, so they did so saving others. Whether "in truth" it was the pilot, a passenger or a terrorist who took the plane down does not matter. The plane went down in a Pennsylvania field, not in the White House.

the TV-show mythbusters tested this, several times. It turned out to be a myth
The pressure is not high enough and the hole is too small. Explosive decompression only occurred when a hole the size of a window was made with explosives. Even then //, there are proven instances of explosive decompression where the plane was still able to maintain control and land.

    • @hannajung7512

Anne Ni Liam word! In fact guns in everyones hand would not had changed anything in this case. What made the diffrence, where that people had the courage to step out of the usual behavior and informed themself about whats happening, and than did the only thing to do in such a cruel situation. Guns do not help anyone, if the owner believes he could get out alive without using it. And they do alot of harm, when the owners believes he is allways theaten and has to shoot to survive. People that arguing for gun rights should really take a look outside an than ask themselfs, if guns ensure safety, why there is less crime, less violence, less deaths through murder in countries where weapons of any kind are outlawed to allmost everyone. Hell, the most peacefull countries I know of are those in which not even the police use guns.

    • @anneniliam9012
      @anneniliam9012 9 лет назад +3

Hanna Jung HI I agree and being British will always support a mainly unarmed Police force. Ours only carry guns in specific situations that require them. Almost no one commits a crime thinking he will be caught and punished for it. However fanatics be they Muslim, Christian or from any other faith do not represent the majority and if the majority stand up and are counted against them then they will always lose in the end. For evil to triumph all that is needed is for good men to do nothing

    • @hannajung7512
      @hannajung7512 9 лет назад +1

yeah, thats it. And it needs people informed of the backgrounds of terrorism, to hinder those people to work. As treating all people as if they are criminals (or certain people, like "all muslims) only strengthens terrorism. but people able to recognize the strings and ties leading to an attack can inform the police in time and thus stop the attack befor it even is lunged. Thus happend in Germany several times

    • @anneniliam9012
      @anneniliam9012 9 лет назад +1

Hanna Jung Education not only abut the problem and cure but about the causes it's like any diease look at the causes and address causes as well as cutting out the cancer. You can't cure diabetes whilst continuing to guzzle sugar & beer or lung cancer while continuing to smoke and terrorism by leaving people in places such as Gaza with no hope no future and nothing except the desire for revenge to sustain them (Israel take note!) otherwise the majority I spoke opf becomes a support for the terrorist, that's why the IRA was so successful for 25 years.

    • @hannajung7512

true, not to mention the governments of severak western countries, that sectrectly support extremist groups of all kind, so weapons can be sold and countries with ressources they long for destabalized, so, they can raise their influence their. And last but not Least the Media all over the world pouring stories and hate and missinformation into the minds of the people

  • @AyaKatz
    @AyaKatz  14 лет назад +3

EndKing, the issue is not merely guns -- it's weapons of any sort. A well aimed shot from a passenger would have put each terrorist out of comission. But if guns are not allowed because of cabin pressure, what's the reason they take our knives and razor blades away from us? Do we want terrorists to be the only ones who are armed?

    • @TheKhopesh
      @TheKhopesh 2 года назад +1

Hell, even just having half the passengers bearing firearms would have ensured the terrorists wouldn't have hijacked the plane, because they'd have known that even armed with assault rifles they could never kill every passenger before the passengers killed all the terrorists.
Even if the plane went down from the bullets, that's exactly what not having guns forced the passengers to do anyway.
And as things are/were, many of the passengers who fought back were forced to suffer for FAR longer before they died. At least explosive decompression would have been quick (even if you survive the pressure change at that altitude, the impact after a mere few seconds' fall would have killed them virtually instantly).
Whereas many were cut, beaten, and mutilated in their struggle, and many of them would have been in agony for minutes or even an hour or two before they bled to death or before their side drove the plane into the ground.
Ultimately, guns not only force the badguys to say "That's impossible to win, we'd never get what we want", but even if they try anyway, at least the passengers have a better chance of survival.
Or barring that, at least a more dignified, quicker, and less painful end.
Having a bunch of law-abiding passengers well armed and at least decently trained is not only ideal in EVERY hijacking situation, but it's also the exact concept of "a well regulated Militia" from the US Constitution.

    @AyaKatz
Well, an aircraft is not sealed even under normal circumstances. It is constantly refilled with fresh air from intakes, and emptied out through two exit valves, one ta the front and one almost at the end of the cabin. A bullet will simply create a new small leak and the outflow valves will tighten a bit and then the pressure will balance. Naturally tha aircraft will then descend, just in case.

@lemonfemale I agree. Anybody can make a mistake. Cops don't have special powers of omniscience. What they do have is immunity from legal prosecution if they make a mistake in the line of duty. I think this tends to make the man on the street a little more careful to avoid mistakes than the average cop. But nobody is perfect, and that's just part of life.

I love all of the arguments here on the, 'real story' of Flight 93, who cares about that? The truth is not what is most important part of this song it is the argument that disarming the citizens is foolish and counter productive but that Americans at least will fight not only for their lives but to save others. It is the story that matters more than the truth and even more importantly it is the theme and the fact that it argues that fighting back is important and necessary because if you are fighting for what you believe in you are fighting a good fight in your mind. The politics of the fight can be worried about after.

@shdowhunt60 Yes, it tells those stories from a different point of view. They are still the same stories, and it is still the same deity. You have to understand that it's all part of the same imaginary universe. What you are doing is like arguing about whether classical Star Trek or the Next Generation is the real thing. Well, neither is real, but when Mr. Spock makes a guest appearance in the newer version, he's the same character, even if you think his take on Vulcan philosophy has changed.

This reminds me of an interview I read about with an Australian General and his planning on teaching shooting to a bunch of boy scouts.
The Interviewer was horrified and told the general she thought he was equipping them to become violent killers.
I loved his reply to her "Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?"

On the other hand, the New Testament has plenty to say on the subject, with Yahweh saying things like "This is my beloved son, in whom I am well-pleased" (Matthew 3:17), etc. (Would post more, but RUclips has a character limit...)

They took off from Newark on a warm autumn day
With forty five travelers and crew
They all were unarmed at the will of the law
    Security passed them all through
An hour into flight time four Arabs jumped up
    Two Ahmeds, [?], and Saied
Announced a hijacking and waved knives around
Razor-blades box-knives and steak knives they found
And a box that they swore was a bomb up and down
They thought that was all they would need
Flight 93 no more will fly
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky
You might not survive, but at least you can try
Stand up and bring the ship down
Cici the stewardess had a cellphone
And called up her husband to say
The plane has been hijacked we'll do as we're trained
    Be quiet and humbly obey
They'll dicker for money, or some social cause
    The government surely will pay
They'll put us out somewhere and leave with their score
Or maybe police will come catch them and more
That's always the way this has been done before
With luck, I'll be home in a day
Flight 93 no more will fly
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky
You might not survive, but at least you can try
Stand up and bring the ship down
Next was Mark Bingham who had a phone too
And used it to call up his mom
He said they'd been hijacked by three foreign men
Who had knives and said they had a bomb
But some of the passengers plotted, he said
To take back the plane as it flew
But first tell me mom, is it true what they say
That three other airplanes were hijacked today
Flown straight into buildings and blew them away
His mother cried and said it's true
Flight 93 no more will fly
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky
You might not survive, but at least you can try
Stand up and bring the ship down
Jeremy Gleck called his wife on the phone
And told of the bomb and the knives
He said if these stories we're hearing are true
We might as well fight for our lives
His wife told him yes, the world trade center's hit
    And maybe the pentagon too
He left the phone hanging and came back and said
We've nothing to fight with and may wind up dead
But we've voted to stand up and fight them instead
And we might keep them from getting through
Flight 93 no more will fly
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky
You might not survive, but at least you can try
Stand up and bring the ship down
Thomas Burdett phoned his wife several times
Reporting the course of the fight
He said one man's been stabbed and we can't reach the cockpit
But somehow we'll alter the flight
We've guessed that the target is likely the White House
And if we fail we'll surely die
We've nothing to fight with except our bare hands
But we'll keep on fighting until the plane lands
One way or the other, we've taken our stand
My darling, I love you, goodbye
Flight 93 no more will fly
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky
You might not survive, but at least you can try
Stand up and bring the ship down
Jason the pilot could hear the whole tale
He'd signaled as well as he could
He saw that the terrorists still held the cockpit
And one way to stop them for good
He watched as the passengers battled and died
And knew that no help would be found
The guard was distracted, just one chance to win
There's one case where suicide isn't a sin
He weighed all his chances and said hogger in
And drove the ship into the ground
Flight 93 no more will fly
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky
You might not survive, but at least you can try
Stand up and bring the ship down
Down down bring the ship down
Down down bring the ship down
Flight 93 hit the ground at full speed
And no one aboard her survives
But the White House still stands and a few thousand folks
Can thank those aboard for their lives
There's no guarantee when the bad guys come in
That they won't kill us all to a man
So when some fanatics are out to have fun
There's nowhere to hide and there's nowhere to run
Then pray that the law lets you carry a gun
But fight back however you can
Flight 93 no more will fly
Dead on the ground or dead in the sky
You might not survive, but at least you can try
Stand up and bring the ship down

@lemonfemale You're right that this was no ordinary hijacking. However, I've never been a big fan of non-resistance. Holding your fire till the right moment when it will do the most good makes sense. Resisting because "money" or "time" or "honor" is less important than lives makes much less sense -- and sets a very bad precedent. Good for you on packing a box cutter, but why not also a gun?

I am not against all guns, but I do think the laws that we have about guns need to be enforced as well as laws closing down loopholes. The private sellers at gun shows and internet sales are what I'm talking about.
I was a soldier and I've also had a gun held to my head at a different time, at work. I don't think we all need to run around acting like Rambo, with guns in hand to make our country safer.

Every gun show I've been to makes you go through a FFL holder to purchase a firearm, if that gives you any comfort.
On top of that, all of the concealed carry training I've ever seen talks about how important restraint and attempts to de-escalate are, and that actually drawing is an absolute last resort.

The Gun show loophole is a myth and has been for decades, you need a FFL in order to be a dealer at all, nevermind at a gun show, the only potential loophole is through a single person selling a gun to another single person, which doesn’t require a license because it’s a private transaction.

@shdowhunt60 Read the OT. Jehovah orders plenty of bloodbaths for the uncircumcised. Saul lost his job as king because he wouldn't kill all those he was ordered to kill. But the really telling part is that the deity has the same hangups in both cases: not eating pork, circumcision, not drawing pictures of any living things. These are idiosyncrasies that help to identify him as a specific god. The only difference is the favored in-group. Compared to other gods around the globe: No resemblance.

There are many people who believe in Yahweh who do not accept the New Testament. On the other hand, the New Testament specifically says that it builds on what is in the OT. The Koran tells many of the same stories about Allah as are told about Yahweh in the Old Testament. It's the same character.
