One of the best . I first watched it as a kid . My dad from Liverpool explained a lot of it to me . I'm 65 now and am still a lover of history .

Spellbinding soliloquy by Laughton to his wife during film's early minutes. Extraordinary performances.

The Kordas made so many great films in the 1930's and 40's. Well made and excellent casts. Charles Laughton was beginning his run of memorable roles, and the casts are full of names we would eventually recognize. With UA distributing in the US, they got wide play over here.

A wonderful movie capturing the humanity of Henry VIII. For all his power, what he wanted was a long term loving relationship and he never got it. Add to this insightful appraisal of people in general, there was the marvelous background of the court. It is really a wonder that without todays sophisticated technology, the handiwork of Vincent Korda could work such wonders.

What a great movie on a king who becomes a tyrant. The lack of music gives it a tense feel too during the execution scene. Maybe everything looks a bit too clean all the costumes and the sets but still a very interesting movie.

He is forever the reigning and sovereign king of character actors. I have dreamed in vain of seeing such as he in a romance, in which he triumphs in love.

8:35 Where’s his “Cod Piece”? A problem with the censors of the time? Henry VIII’s would be big enough to make him fall on his face!
Charles Laughton was a strange man but a brilliant actor.

Great movie, however it is definitely NOT a documentary. It plays very loosely with the historical facts.
HRM Henry VIII of happy memory, certainly did not toss food on the floor. Unfortunately many people think that's exactly how he acted.
I love the line "...with half the English executioners out of work."
