If you're new to the channel, I've ranked MOST NES and even a few SNES companies. Binge the playlist! ruclips.net/video/OP2U_GgYdNE/видео.html
I'd say my favorite was the Tom & Jerry game.
I really need to play some Retro games
love ya Riggs, awesome video
Please keep doing these rankings. Maybe NES games you haven’t covered, Gameboy, and SNES games
How about ranking American Video Entertainment games next? It's honestly just about the only NES publisher I can think of that you haven't covered yet. They would be loaded with D's and F's, mostly F's but I'd still like to hear your take on them.
I played the living hell out of Tom & Jerry. It was so hard, but fun
I don't wanna get you _too_ excited, John, but there _was_ a 'Miss Piggy in Space' video game: 1983's _Pigs in Space, Starring Miss Piggy_ for the Atari 2600. It's a collection of three minigames, two of which are essentially Muppet-themed clones of _Space Invaders_ and _Frogger,_ with the third being a rather slow-paced vertical shooter of sorts.
That was a fun cart. I was a big pigs in space fan
True! I never did play that one but I bet it's better.
That was one of my better 2600 games I owned
@@billyd530111 that and snoopy were a couple of the children’s titles that were really excellent
Yep, your right, but I'm sure John knew that, he is a game guru after all😊
Tom & Jerry: "The Ultimate Game of Cat and Mouse" is so good!
*That being said:* SCREW the kitchen level, as well as the one where you have to jump from a platform to a radio, to the (this part is cool lookin) Nes. You'll definitely get sick of hearing the level's music; if you get stuck, and booooooy does frustration take hold. The game definitely (for me) had a pretty high level of difficulty, BUT the fact that it is esthetically pleasing, and the over-all sound design is great. I mean, ya really can't beat hearing music from the show, (above comment aside) to help tie the whole experience together, right? Good schtuff, good schtuff.
Ended up getting a bunch of the Remote Control host's vinyl collection right after he passed away back in the day. He had some cool stuff!
Interesting stuff. My buddy had Orb 3-D and it did have 3-D Glasses with it. We used to chuckle at "Eat here and get gas" every time. Gotta hand it to a lot of these for their nice graphics and big sprites anyway.
There was a time during this time when those '3D Glasses' were kinda popular. Makes colors like red pop out, blues sink in. It was crazy
Hunt for Red October should probably have been a turn-based strategy game.
Submarine games give me claustrophobia.
03:07 - If ever a game that probably would’ve converted me to Genesis back then this might’ve been it. I would’ve much rather played Mickey’s Castle of Illusion cause that game was and still is legit awesome!
I remember playing it on game gear
Oh, snap; my man just gave Barbie the 'D'
🤣
JD Roth was the host of Gamepro too. I still watch that, Starcade and Video Power.
Wow, I have about 100 NES games and have never played a single one of the games here. Doesn't look like I'm missing out on much though.
John seemed a little aggressive and angry in this video game review, which is not typical of his other reviews. But given the subject matter, I don't blame him haha. Still interesting and informative as always.
Tom & Jerry is my favorite in this list, I absolutely love your game ranking videos😊
Win, Lose, or Draw was the only Hi-Tech game I had as a kid and I must admit I did play it fairly often.
I had it on an ancient computer (Hyperion) semi-recently and then later on I moved it to a 286. Oh, now that I have a 286 again (with CGA!) I can load it up! Just gotta find the diskette.
Remote Control and Tom and Jerry look pretty decent.
The Rollerblade game looks like it was made with MS Paint.
Remote control is one of my favorite NES games I still play it quite often
The Barbie game makes me think of the Popeye game.
Never played any of these, but the Remote Control game and the Tom&Jerry game look like they would be fun to play.
Barbie, Remote Control, and Tom and Jerry are all fun games.
There's no need to make these videos for Sega Genesis because every game is A++.
You think they were targeting a female audience with a Barbie game? You don't say! 😄
When I saw "Hi-Tech Expressions" I said "UGH! That hurts me a lot!".
The reason? "The Hunt For Red October" was my 8-bit gaming nightmare when I was a kid!
That music was a bad midway between weird and scary, the game itself was so slow (and BAD, but that's another story) and punishing that it he used to give me huge doses of anxiety!
I have 3 NES consoles: when I've purchased the 2nd one, in most recent times, I've got not one but TWO cartridges of THFRO as a "gift".
That was a gift?! It sounded more like if the monster of your childhood came back to haunt you again as an adult being with twice the power, damn!
Playing it as an adult, I finally understood the reason for that: the game features a really dark atmosphere, but not in a cool way.
Bringin' two examples, "Batman" by Sunsoft and "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (another game with very weird and scary music, but in a good way in this case) by Probe were way darker, but they were also mysterious and fun to play.
THFRO by Hi-Tech Expressions was just a mess: it sounded like if they tried to make something appetible for less younger audiencies, but they failed miserably!
Believe it or not the last level of Hunt for Red October turns into a platform game
I would totally go for remote control.
I can't believe they made a Hunt for Red October game lol. They were literally trying to capitalize on anything back then, huh? Games were so easy to make that if any movie, TV show or toy seemed popular someone, somewhere made a game for it lol.
Would The Hunt for Red October count as the first Tom Clancy game?! 🤣
NES cartridge! Well done!
What really hikes the rating for Tom & Jerry, is the excellent soundtrack by Mr. Follin.
Yes!!! A John Riggs video on Saturday
Hahaha… easy one for me, I’d say my favorite Hi-Tech Expressions’ game is the one they finally never made: Twin Peaks, the Game.
(Man, I dream about that game almost every night!)
I remember like back around the mid 80s (around 1984-1986) when I was 6 or 7 the daycare I went to had some Sesame Street games on these RadioShack TRS-80 Computers with two games that later appeared on the 1st NES game Ernies magic shapes and the one with Space Grover. There were also ones with Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and another one with Grover.
I had Hunt For Red October. I don't remember why or how we got it but we had it. We only had a few games back in the day so as you know you are what you had whether it was any good or not. I remember enjoying it. I don't remember it being super slow but I haven't played it in 30 years... I remember liking the arctic level. We had a bunch of weird games that none of my friends had and none of them wanted to play, hahaha.
The Win, Lose, or Draw title screen almost looks like something you'd see on the Super Game Boy with that default 1A palette. My favorite of these? I think I'm going to have to be the blasphemer and pick the muppet game. Yes, it's bad, but it's one of those games where you just get lost in its unintentionally surreal world, and to me, that's one of the biggest things that made the NES library so special. That's not to say that there weren't games with excellent gameplay and production values - good games in the traditional sense - on the NES, but every system has those; the NES is one of the best systems for those deep, dark worlds that your mind can get lost in.
As someone who owns that Muppet game and has played it hundreds of times over the decades, let me say this in its defense: Gonzo's space level is somewhat fun. Fozzie's level, however, is like a psychological torture experiment testing your sanity. Once you gather all the keys, you move on to a "somewhat" fun platformer, too. You're right, though, that it could have been anything, and making it a Muppets game does make it a missed opportunity.
Finally. Lol. I've been waiting for another ranking video. 😎
Great video man¡¡ like all you do, but John you rank Tom and Jerry with an A, the same rate than Mr. Gimmick, come on¡¡¡ no jokes please.
I can agree my kid loves the Mickey and Sesame Street games. Good memories. Plus Tom and Jerry good game as well.
I remember Hi Tech Expressions. They used to make greeting cards before getting into gaming.
I remember renting the sesame street games multiple times and being entertained, even though I was a little too old to be playing them. Action, Adventure, Edutainment, easy, hard, cryptic...if it's on the NES, it's all the same. If the box art looked cool, then it get's even more rental points. To think, I skipped over games like Jackal, NES Open, Blaster Master, to pickup Ernie's big splash for the third time lol.
Had Ernie’s Big Splash on the Commodore 64 growing up and my little sister loved playing it. Would try and fill the whole screen every time.
I really like the sprite work in the mickey games.and the tom jerry games... Man these guys were.really talented at what they do. (Most of the games as some of them are bad)
Mr Riggs as a kid I had Jim handsons muppet adventure n I played the hell out of it n I had the staples at the time for the nes n idk why I was drawn to this title along side cobras triangle lol, u just made me bring back memories lol thanks sir.
I have fond childhood memories of renting the Sesame Street games as a kid
they all looked like crap to me
Unfortunately an infamous ROM hack called Ernie and the Muppets Take It All Off ruined that Sesame Street ABC game for me
I know that hack -- big yikes.
'Win Lose or Draw' was basically a Mario Paint, without the paint, and you could finally draw stuff on your NES. :)
You do know Itchy and Scratchy are a parody/homage to the much, much older Tom and Jerry, eh?
Erin plays games played remote control on her channel👍😎
as she should!
You drew an NES game👍
I was kind of expecting you to rank the HI Tech Nes games sometime!
Nice with a new nes ranking video! Still looking forward to Technos. Have you done the simpsons games yet? I actually think bartman vs radioactive man is an A, but I guess I'm not a majority. Keep the nice work up Riggs!
Tom and Jerry nes I never owed but my cousin did I always played it when I was over there
I never played any of these because they were aimed at little kids, except for Tom and Jerry. That's a fun game. I like the cartoon games like Bugs Bunny. They are as fun and funny like the cartoons. Brings back the Saturday Mornings of the 80s.
You're right, Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry totally weren't aimed at little kids. No kid has ever liked Bugs Bunny.
But chess and The Hunt for Red October... Yeah, definitely made for little kids.
I don't know why I laughed so hard but when John said "nothing says 8-bit NES like Cookie Monster and Bert getting crunk"!
win lose or draw was the best from this company - looks like a nice NES cart :)
Chessmaster didn't get good until 3000, and then only the CD re-release. I cannot imagine playing the first one on NES. Also, Chaos at the Carnival just kind of sucked everywhere.
Remote Control was one of my family's original NES games, so I have a lot of nostalgia playing that one, so my favorite would probably be Remote Control.
Is it just me or do Retro games look really
fun, I need a Sega Master System
I have a soft spot for the sesame street games. Great music!
Great stuff John hope you had a nice new years!
Thank you so much, I was breaking my head on Remote Control. I use to watch it back in the day on MTV, but could not remember the name of it and now i do. :)
My favorite is Tom & Jerry. I am going to try out a few of these games.
Nice .. also I know this edit ….. :) also I LOVE Remote Control
I thought he was done with these! I just started watching the playlist of all the other ones too. Cool! The only ones I did own or play were the Sesame Street ABC/123 (never played them much), and Hunt for Red October (that one either, UGH)!
Thanks John I've been looking for a list like this Save and a thumps up. Our Nes Joystick, Nes mini and your list will keep my kid busy. He is that age where he can just start to learn games. 3 yrs old.
I loved Tom & Jerry. Still have it
I think you’re right, the Tom & Jerry game is surprisingly decent so I’ll go with that as my favorite from this lot. I found that at a goodwill in battleground WA a few years back, along with the NES Arkanoid, pretty decent haul at $3 a piece. Love the videos, thanks for doing them. Cheers!
It’s the mid 90s and I’m a grade school kid. I remember finally getting my mom to try playing a video game with me and it was the Muppets game. That lasted 5 minutes and is the only time my mom ever played with me. Imagine if we played Mario 3 or TMNT 2. What could’ve been
I didn't play many of these, but I had Chessmaster on Game Boy and loved it. I even managed to beat it on the hardest setting once.
It seems that Hi-Tech Expressions’ thing is they manage to output a high bar in presentation both in graphics and even sound, but unfortunately they completely miss the mark in the game design. The edutainment titles seem to be good at least, and the Tom & Jerry game is a decent surprise for me, might fetch a copy to check it out, a loose copy seems to go for fairly cheap.
More of this! Kept us waiting ;)
Greta! I missed this ranking videos a lot!
Finally another ranking video!
The 3D Orb game was impressive for its time on the NES!
I didn't know the Tom & Jerry game was basically the same as the DOS version. Or that Muppet Adventure even came on on the NES. I had that on Tandy 1000. It was severely broken on the Tandy but definitely took me back. The art was soo striking to me back then. Like Double Dragon II, I think that's the only reason I ever tried to like it despite the complete flaw that it was.
not a cartoon , but a good saturday morning watch ,
Thanks John !
Nice video! I loved the Count's game as a kid! It was amazing to hear crystal clear speech, and it was a guilty pleasure (since I was probably closer to middle school than preschool at that point I can recall, I was embarassed to play a "baby's game", but it was fun!)
Corrects the crooked artwork...by leaving it crooked. Hot.
looked straight at my angle.
I enjoyed MTV Remote Control more than I thought I would. Even after the year 2000.
Barbie? Not so much.
Great video also could you rank Konami SNES games
coming soon.
Letter-Go-Round freaked me out when I was a kid, because the atmosphere is so unlike an environment you would want to be. Amusement parks are supposed to be lit up and fun. This is silent and dark, kind of like you're somewhere that shut down for the night, and then all of the sudden these Sesame Street characters pop up out of no where and start dancing around. It's freaky.
0:27 Yeah....Barbie...the fashion doll line...
The Japanese counterpart, The Lost Word of Jenny, is much weirder (and harder and cryptic).
On my opinion of Hi Tech Expression NES Games
Barbie is B
The Hunt for Red October is B
Mickey's Adventures in Numberland is B
Sesame Street Big Bird Hide and Speaks is B
Sesame Sreets Countdown is A
Tom and Jerry is B
Tom and Jerry 👍👍👍
It's pretty cool that there was am education focused publisher like HI Tech Expressions.
Tom & Jerry (and Tuffy) is the most famous game on this list, there was an infamous ROM hack of it that was sold as a bootleg Pokémon game and featured in pretty much every early bootleg compilation on RUclips.
How about Nexoft or Seta for your next ranking video? It's not a huge library on the NES, but they'd have enough.
I love the Muppets... until I actually try to watch them. Then it's just so meh. They're the characters kids grow up with, so there's such reverence for them, but watching them is just so dull. I assume that's why the Muppets have the most canceled TV shows. Everyone loves them in theory.
Loved remote control on mtv
Thanks for these kind of videos Jon!
Gah I remember renting one of the Sesame Street games from a Phar-Mor back in the day but never knowing which one, but after watching this it was the ABC one I remember that ferris wheel!
hunt for red october is decent. worth another look.
Don't worry John I've seen guys with a lot less hair than you like my dad and Steve Harvey
;--)
I would definitely say the roads in the rollerblade game is are based on my town here in Aberdeen 😂. Maybe not literally the roads, but probably the idea of Aberdeen
Loved the video!
I had WLD running on a Hyperion computer ;) It's on my channel somewhere.
Great stuff as always. Hard to pick my favorite from this list.
JD Roth! Not only was he the host of those Nickelodeon game shows, he was the producer too! Man I miss those days.
Finally!! Yes!
Bro I think you should rank Natsume games including the Famicom titles
Hi-Tech is probably just as bad as LJN.
Tom & Jerry is fun though, so is Incredible Crash Dummes from LJN. Both developed by Software Creations.
I have the hunt for red October for the gameboy
The snes version is slightly better
You “obviously thought they were targeting a girls audience” with Barbie John?? REALLY? What was your first clue?? LMAO. Love ya buddy.
Mickey in Number land, Mickeys Safari in letter land, WIN, LOSE, OR DRAW and Sesame St. COUNT DOWN should get an A
