One clarifying note: While Paul Whiteman called himself and was known by some as the "King of Jazz" - that's an insane title considering his status in the genre, the history of jazz, and how far jazz would go beyond him. I should have made it clearer that this title, while he did claim it, is far from accurate.
As a cartoonist nerd I gotta say that Steamboat Willie is the second or third appearance of Mickey. The first was from a short called Plane Crazy where he jacks Amelia Earhart’s plane 😅
Where can I find that “A Smile Will Go A Long Way” sample?? My searches have been unfruitful
Question for Mr Crates ... What would you say the best way to go about sampling 78s ... I happen to have a decent sized collection of them but no way to play them at this time....
Giggling at the nerve of a dude named Whiteman in claiming kingship of something poor new orleans blacks and Creoles invented
Imagine how cool it would be to be known as the king in your field of music...I'd love to be called the king of hip-hop One day but it seems dilla has that title...there can only be one king
Man this will be crazy in like 15 years when like very well recorded Jazz records start to come into play.
If they dont renew the recordings rights or lyrics lol ssshhh
@@SziontificMysticif Disney can’t anymore then we should be safe
@@ryleypalmer is not that Disney can’t,its that they don’t care about Mickey Mouse now. Mickey Mouse used to make up a lot of the pie for Disney’s revenue, but with the amount of acquisitions they’ve made that mouse doesn’t make nearly enough as everything they own.
@iLoveMalikToo that's not how Disney works. They still use the mouse as their mascot. They just don't care about the steam boat willy version of the mouse which is way different then the modern mouse which is drill copywrite.
It’ll be even better in 16 years when I will write my new novel called “Grapes Of Wrath”!
(jk I’m sure that one has been renewed, if not multiple times)
damn this should be a yearly series, it's cool to see all the stuff most people might overlook
found one yesterday Called Tape scratching.. Wtf idk but Yo wehherchhhwaaaa
Advice to anyone with a turntable that plays 78 speed who decides to pick some 78s up: get a second cartridge with a 78 needle. It’s wider and makes the record sound way better, it causes less wear than old gramophones, and using your normal needle on a 78 will speed wear significantly.
This is it! It took me way too long to realize that...when I just read your helpful comment right now
Big Facts also 78s are way more brittle then wax. Handle that shellac with care
What kind of needle comes standard on record players? And where might I look for a replacement?
@@mobeats8084 standard needles / cartridges are for modern vinyl (thinner grooves / thinner needle) - if you have a record player that lets you change the whole cartridge, I recommend an audio-technica AT-VM95SP - if you can’t change the cartridge, Google “78 RPM stylus for (your record player)” and see what comes up.
I usually use noise canceling software to get rid of the surface noise and liberal amounts of eq to boost the quiet low end and cut the tinny high end when I have used material like this.
This is really one of those channels I knew I was subscribing to within 1 minute of the first video I saw! Keeping doing the great work!
🙏🙏
@@diggingthegreats With your channel name I’m surprised you don’t have a video on DITC, I’m just gonna assume it’s secretly being worked on as I type this ;)
In Europe, we were 50 years ahead for most of the time. When it came to the Public Domain, that is :) Until The Beatles were to become copyright-free, then McCartney lobbied hard and it got extended to 70 years. But not before The Beatles‘ first recordings, including their first hit single from 1962, became Public Domain.
Bum McCartney
Yah like mine Omi always said once upon a time War
Lmao I love Mickey on the thumbnail
Fr
Steamboat Willie!
And Disney can’t do anything about it now 😂
It's free real estate! 😉
2024 let's go! Please keep speaking out on copyright issues, you are articulate and easy to digest, love your work!
Sample anything is the way. If you getting sued money is happening. What else is art for?
@@drumprojekt3394 I dig the sentiment, I never was shy with sampling over a copyright issue. Unfortunately it's usually the small artists that get crushed while the bigger ones can afford to settle a couple lawsuits. It won't matter unless you start to get successful...
@@rocketsauna yeah its time to level the playing field they overstepped in a lot of ways and the judge that ruled against biz died first anyway. Being passed for incleared samples has given me oppurtunistic underestimation i cant really explain but its worked for me as far as personal growth goes. Always learn and stay hungry!
As a guy who has scraped a living from music for a fair few years, I am of course in favour of musicians and composers being paid their due.
But equally, there’s something great about the idea of these century-old records, which might otherwise be completely forgotten, getting a new lease of life thanks to creative reinterpretations from producers & DJs of today.
Speaking personally, I would be STOKED BEYOND DESCRIPTION if I thought that one of my numerous flop records would be smooshed up into a cutting-edge future funk track in the mid-2100s.
As always, loving the channel. Keep on doing what you’re doing.
I mean stories like Snow White should never legally be a copyrightable thing cause its literally a folk tale, something that all the folk created together, and which brothers grimm compiled so they could live on forever.
Thank you for reigniting my love for hip-hop. Lost touch with it because of what is produced these days. Disciples like you should be celebrated!!!
Same I got back into alot of old hiphop I forgot about. I mean the greats like tribe and DOOM never. But I forgot about shit I used to love. Great to add those back into my Playlist.
Agreed! celebrate the greatest celebrators of the greats
@@christianterrill3503 Never forgotten any music I have loved through my whole life, unless you have dementia, or severe trauma in your life, like most genuine music lovers, music is in their blood so never forget what they love.
Every single vid he drops bangs, ugh we need more like him!
Happy New Year DTG! He’s back and he’s going to be dropping heat throughout this year. He’s cooking for sure 🔥🔥🔥
The videos coming in the next few months... I cannot wait 🔥
Buying a gramaphone as a kid says a lot about the man he was going to become lol
I love this is the first video of the year considering your challenges and recent issues on RUclips
Let creativity reign🙌🏾
Thank you for dropping the knowledge on the family. A video on how you break down bass lines would be awesome.
Can’t wait and see what new music will come in 20 years time with more and more beats going into public domain
Love it!! I've got a 1912 Edison Jukebox (giggles) that has been in my family a long time, and I love listening to it.
Dude just created a sample flip challenge
😏
@@diggingthegreats🤓😌
I never heard about that Library and Citizen DJ: some creative goldmines man! Thanks so much for your knowledge and your channel, keep it 🆙
In 2026, we'll have some of the first electrically recorded songs to play with. now THAT will be fun.
I've been combing through the Marine Corp Band's collection of public domain Sousa marches these last couple weeks, though, to play on brass instruments instead of sample. Have been pondering a few classic works to rearrange into other genres.
DO IT! 🔥
This is like that one Beck song... "I've got 2 turntables and a gramophone."
...bottles and cans, just clap you hands. Just clap your hands...
Bro, the gramophone is fire🔥🔥
This was so much fun 🔥
Wow ! This is so Cool ! Thank you !!!
"0 x 0 = 0 0 + 0 = 0 zero to the power of zero, 0 to the 0th power. Nothing is born from zero. From the moment you were born, you were influenced by your parents. Originality is pouring all of your influences into something to make something "NEW".
I believe that musical talent depends on good ears. A person who is a good imitator is musically gifted. It is the talent to reproduce a sound as soon as you hear it." - Hideki Naganuma, composer of Jet Set Radio
Great video!
Your knowledge is simply astounding. You’ve definitely set the standard for quality music-related RUclips uploads.
Nice. Motivating me to go to the studio and samplen something from that. Thanks
From the title alone I was about to come mention citizen DJ and of course that is what it was about. Citizen DJ is amazing.
The problem is the RUclips algorithm that can flag you for a copyright violation even if the source material is legally in the public domain.
It's going to be a problem until creators start taking RUclips to court.
We should go back to the original system where it should be 14 years, then an addition 14 years at the request of the author. 28 years is enough.
Another awesomely enjoyable video, thanks. Moby made a ton of cash by sampling out of copyright samples for his album PLAY and selling the tracks for adverts and films. And why not? It's creative and people loved the album, we all should be allowed to stand on the shoulders of giants.....without worrying that their great-grandkids will sue us....or take you YT fees for such stellar videos.
Learning how to make my own beats this year, so this is awesome. Great video as always!
Very cool video. Thanks!
Very cool! And we know it won't get copyright dinged
Turns out if you dig in the crates deep enough, you can use the records for free 😂
not really, because in America its legal to sell copyrights ! Not in the rest of the world...jus sayin´
now this is what I call providing value. Thanks bro, much love
This is so DOPE!!! First, thanks for not only the information but for featuring some beatmakers sampling this incredible music! I usually grab a lot of my sounds from Splice but I’m curious about what the Public Domain has to offer!! Thank you for opening my mind 🥰🙌🏽🎼
Happy new ears!
I LOST it when you whipped out the gramophone 😂😂😂 Amazing video, thanks Brandon!
That thumbnail is bold
The funny thing about 78s is that not only are 78 rpm collectors a separate community from 33 & 45 collectors; they are also a separate community from gramophone enthusiasts. Gramophones are kind of hard on records, so 78 collectors seek out these big transcription turntables from defunct radio stations. Pretty cool gadgets.
If you're at all interested in prewar music, see if your library has a copy of the book "Do Not Sell at Any Price" by Amanda Petrusich.
incredible channel
Best use of Steamboat Willy I’ve seen yet! Where is the merch at?
" we need more creativity in the world" we all can agree this is important to many. 😢
Happy digging yall! Let’s go to work!
Bro you're the guy.. such great content I wish I could watch this show 7 days a week.
I LOVE citizen DJ I use the interview recordings allllll the time, thank you for this
LOVE THIS!! bout to pull out the MPC and play... when i get off work..lol
YES 🔥
mans rly pulled out the grandmaphone
Digging is awesome fun. I never really bought sample packs. Digging for original sounds was always more fun.
Just a note for "modern" equipment that wasn't mentioned, you need to change the stylus for old 78rpm records to play them properly. In the old days (70s and earlier) there would be a way to flip to the other stylus, from 33/45 (microgroove) to 78 (usually 3.0mil), and back again. With a modern turntables you could have a 78rpm stylus loaded in a second headshell and swap the entire headshell out (of course adjusting the tracking weight for that other stylus).
beyond... thanks!!
1:42 love to see a tactile prop from the appropriate era
Oh this video is EXACTLY what I've been looking for! I've been browsing songs from the public domain collection ever since the new year, always thinking I should try sampling one but having no idea how to start - the tools you showed off briefly look like they'd be PERFECT
"I got one turntable and a gramophone!"
We're about to have a new wave we haven't seen since the chipmunk soul of the early 00s. And I can't wait.
We about to catch some Lil Smth and Young Meh on some ragtime triplets like Idlewild on sizzurp.
Happy New Year, Digs 😊 Still holding hope for that Illadelph Halflife vid, brother 🙏🏾🙂
I'm really looking forward to it because I've been feeling like one is about to happen soon.
Talking about TCQ not making a cent on “Can I Kick It?” Does that mean Beastie Boys didn’t make anything on “Paul's Boutique”
Good question, because they would have owed so many people money for that album!
This was great man :-) and incredibly inspirational! Can you do this every year? 😎
Just off that little snippet, I can hear flips fo The Frivolous Girl in my head already lol
The thumbnail alone made my day haha. Keep killin it in 2024, brother!
Great channel! Astonishing for everyone living in the 80s and 90s. Deep soul here.
Acording to wikipedia, You need a longer spring with more recoil and higher compression. Set to run 2 twice as many records per crank!! oooooo oohhhh
The other issue with that Lou Reed sample clearance is the other cleared Samples used like the slide guitar from “sunshower” by Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band get nothing…
It's a broken system 👎
Guess who's cooking tonight 😊😊 we appreciate you king
YES! Get cookin 🔥
Happy new year bro😊
Loved this! Didnt know about the public domain site. thanks!!
Laughed hard at “public domain Mickey”. Great vid
some of this stuff would sit very naturally in a DOOM album
SHOUTOUT TO DIGGING THE GREATS!!!!
Love the inspiration.
bro your abilities are beyond what i expect, every single time i see one of your videos.
this one is no exception. fuck, man.
I actually don't feel like I wasted my time watching this~
It's a nice feeling for a youtube video... I miss this feeling, lol.
Now this is crate digging. Only a true DJ busts out a gramophone to play 78’s.
Love the shot of ATCQ with the 'cuse jersey... then the shot of lou reed, who spent some time there.
I was NOT prepared for the Gramophone 😂😂😂 // I love your teaching style ❤
Agh! Where was this video when I was writing my paper on sampling?
😂 This was hilarious, 9:24 yeah I can see that Sade feel at first. I am gonna dig through my old jazz and big band cassettes and vinyl for anything pre 1924, thanks my dude! I hope to mix me some tomato and basil and make the best sauce my great grandmother never dreamed of 🤔 great now I am hungry 😊
By the way, finding this channel was one of the highlights of my 2023 🎉 Thanks to all involved and have a great new year!
Mr. Rexsaw One DID THAT!!!
If you can flip them old ass songs you a cold dude 😎
man just gave realest sauce. gratefull
Micky was Jammin hard to that sample flip lol.
Amazing. Great job.
Subbed right away.
This is so dope!
Very cool video.
And, I can't be the only one who feel like those original 78's sound like something DankPods would use in his videos :)
These recordings could also serve as a bargaining chip when you do have a sample you need to clear. If you can find a PD sample similar to the one you want, you can use it to try and negotiate the rights holder to a lower percentage.
0:29 am I the only one who immediately thought of "Mistadobalina"? 😂
greatest shit I've seen this year so far, thank you!!!
I love your videos, after my last video i posted today failed to get views this video brought my mood up. Thanks again for your creativity
Especially now that we have technology that can isolate instruments out of an already mixed track. Imagine isolating Louis Armstrong out of one of his now public domain recordings and being able to play along with him as if he had come into the studio with you.
remember to get a stylus SPECIFICALLY for playing records at 78 rpm. If you don't do this, they'll sound horrible, and even break your stylus if it's not made for them.
7:36 Somebody once toldme the world
This is great to know!!! Very helpful!
I am a 14 year old aspiring producer rapper I thank you so much for your work
Keep it up! 🔥
U produce and rap your songs?
I’m Remember Mac Miller two word Legal issues. First lawsuit Lord Finesse 2 Da Game. He song "Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza.
nice, thanks for these great tips good sir !
That rexsaw one guy gotta drop bam on RUclips or something I’ve been looking for it, it sounds too fire to be in the vault
We need a Sade video
This means Eddie Cantor can do the hook!
I love your videos, thank for talk about this topics. I understand English but is not my language, I’m from Chile 🇨🇱 and it will be awesome subtitles in Spanish. Maybe the Latin community follow you more. Saludos ✌🏻buen año
We need a reformation of copyright law
we need to abolish copyright law actually. its an unfair system easily exploited by corporations n capitalist entities that hurts both the original artists n the people who adapt, change, or use the original product of that artist in any way
You should check out Electro Swing, if you haven't already. It's sampling lots of old jazz and swing records and adding a dance beat. Love it!!!
Yep I think it’s gonna be getting bigger just like the 1920s but with a dance beat and everyone will go back to dancing Charleston style and dressing like that. I’ve done it for years and already get called a Victorian chimney sweep or peaky blinders
