The best 7 series ever made 👌
Jay Q I agree this was the perfect size, best looking one. Love the 740i sport with the M Parallels. Never understood those that need the Long wheel base. Unless you have a driver get the short one. Looks and handles better too.
Agree
@@sheldonm3535 i have two E38 ....728i & 740iL....the 728i is for me every day ...plenti of space ...buut !!! For weekend i go with 740 long....becouse....i have 1,88 ! And i need space for family and friends....the short one not so much...i must put my seet near the stering wheel and i dont like.....🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃😋😋
e38, e39, e46... My favorite aesthetic.
I had my paper round from 1997 - 2001 and a house I delivered to had one of these on the drive. Today in 2024, that car is still on their drive and I'm not joking. Its a classy green with big cream leathers. Its absolutely beautiful
Definitively one of the most beautiful cars ever made.
Joe RMG agreed! I miss it
I agree with you whole heartedly
& Mercedes-Benz W126 & W220
Yours is plastic 😒
Are you saying that a Jaguar XJ has a better interior? As much as I love classic Jags, you won't find much more than some wooden panel...this 7 series is a much more refined cabin overall, with better quality indeed.
One of the best cars I have ever seen. I really want one myself!! Nice video mate!
E38 is a timeless design.
Body style is still one of the best all these years later
One of my neighbors had a 740i e38 in Imola Red over Black leather. Car was beautiful. Slightly modded with chrome delete.
was great till you talked about how disappointed you were with the amount of plastic. seriously? look at the S600s of the time. hell, even later Phantoms used that so-called cheap "plastic" climate control module as well as the heated seat dials from the E38.
supra1722 Exactly. Easily the best interior at the time and it still looks great.
you guys can't take criticism? The points you're making is 100 percent whataboutism. Just because VW and Merc did it worse does not mean that the critique is obsolete.
my reference wasn’t to modern cars where aspects like that are now wrapped in leather or made from metal.
Vou made a mistake, calling it a six peed automatic, the steptronic gearbox, has only 5 speed, and you're right about the big amount of plastic, but it's applied where the eyes can't reach, ubderneath the dashboard, the rest of it, is metal, wood, leather (or vinyl, in inferior motorizations), the only plastic bits that you can see, are on centre console and vents
Whoever ordered and spec'd out this car when new is my kind of dude
Roger Wilco agreed!
If I had endless amounts of money to just throw into an E38 to fix it up and maintain it I would. Sadly, they are money pits. But there is such an old school executive, classy-ness to those cars that are not found in any modern cars today.
Agreed!
The W140 was the real money pit, unfortunately.
You are a lucky guy. I love them. I agree the body lines everyone remembers. One of BMW's high water marks in styling imo. Great vid btw that interior looks amazing!!!!!
Plastic in the interior? Disappointed for it?...seriously!?...you should have seen the interiors of all the cars of the era, including the S-class!
I'm not sure what he was expecting, solid gold? Sure it's plastic but it still looks good.
Armando Martin Lopez my reference wasn’t to modern cars where aspects like that are now wrapped in leather or made from metal.
Where is the plastic? Everything is covered with leather.
Formerly owned 1997 e38. If not already sorted, be ready for a lot to fail around the engine and trans. Do not put on wheels larger than OE 18 Parallel. Lots of mechanical wires to break or rust. It u find 1 still running, it will likely keep running.
Solid video bud. I own a pre-facelift 750i Individual and love it.
Tom Caldwell I had a 740 pre facelift after this and I must say I prefer the look of them
It looks so elegant inside with the cream interior
I had 7 e38 in 2004. It was a good car
You do not buy these cars to be worried about the gas! Proud owner 2001 740i!
Well said, another proud 2001 740i owner, it’s a special car and my weekend toy.
Just bought my first 7 series
E38, 735i manual
bobagopaaa why?
bobagopaaa its m62 with 6 Speed, way More than just Fine, Even the m52 has more than enough torque To make this Car one of the nicest cruisers
krezo wow rare!
krezo nice. Rare in manual. Welcome to the club. Say goodbye to your spare cash.
Having sat in the X300 and a S-type, im not convinced the interiors are actually better, though they are nice in their own way.. reminded me of a Ford era Volvo I had, with the switches.. the E38 feels a bit more subtle. Tbf, the E38 plastic is actually pretty decent, considering how many slightly newer car interiors have aged with peeling soft-touch.
Im terms of the smoothness, having the comparitively poverty-spec 728i, that surprised me with smoothness and quietness while not being numb, I can't really imagine how smooth or quiet the V12 would be.
This era of BMW are really solid and heavy feeling. Build quality is really good. Plastic is inevitable in all cars
The best 7 series! That would make an awesome daily driver!
ChevyBM if you can afford the fuel!
@@OLLIEHEELANDTOE It ain't that thirsty if driven normally. In my opinion gas is so expensive that it is not worth putting in anything boring :)
Mine does about 18mpg can get it to 22mpg if you're light on the old right foot
Use public trans. if you look for economic...
Very good review of a very nice car, well done!
Great car it just needs a set of Alpina wheels
Thing about buying one of these era V12s be it Beemer, Merc or other is there is loads of things to consider, positive and negative and for me it all goes straight out the window the second that long starter note fires up..... ooooooooooooooooooo SOLD
I drove 455 mile on a little more tha half tank in my 1996 750il before. I could not believe i got 36mpg on my road trip
S EDC makes enough difference believe me, just the roads you drive are very good and you cant feel It.
Vasil Georgiev good roads? In Yorkshire? No way!
750il high line. Great auto, exquisite interior..TORQUE..will cost more to maintain…well built!
owned a modified 730D 265hp . oyster grau metallic chromeline mpars :D Super rare loved it to bits
I HAVE THIS EXACT CAR , V12 , its a dream.
20" Alpina Wheels would fit great
Brilliant quality videos
Loved this car
I have two E38..... 728i & 740iL 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
6speed? Lol What... i have a 2000 750i it’s a 5speed auto
OliverD642 that’s you not him
My bad. Slip of the tongue.
Nice back ground song...it was sampled by rap artist Freddie gibbs
this sample is also used in this track: ruclips.net/video/zxxuFBpq9YE/видео.html
Did the Europeans get the 6speed in the v12? North America got a 5 speed auto I think.
timeless.....
Unfortunately we were never offered a V12 powered short wheelbase 7 series in the United States
The Jag Clarkson drove was a Celebration model with the 4.0 AJ6 not 5.3
MatthewCoupeOfficial the reference was to him saying ‘powerrr’ 😆. Not the car.
Please make more videos of this thing

The best car for normal drive is the 740i with the m60 or m62 engine without vanos only watch out on the m62 timing chain
Not in a million years, IMO the 730d is the best E38 for everday driving
@@pakoutac M57 is good in a 3 or 5 series if you want a diesel in a 7 m67 740d is the right one
M57 is bit underpowered
yeh those wheels are better than my 32s on my E38 in manchester my car is well known . style 95 i think .this and the E39 the last off the best ever made .
E38 is the only generation that I prefer over it's s class rival at the time
Agree, such a hard choice E38 or S class? Well I ended up buying both and happy I did.
Very nice review
Wish I hadn't sold my SWB 750. It was difficult to find parking spaces it would fit into though.
I have a Mora violet e38 750i beautiful car
Wish I’d never sold this 😩
@@OLLIEHEELANDTOE certainly is a unique drive and feel
Beautiful example
Its all about the shapes old bmw r the best i dream to own one
im chillinnnnn
What countries offered the short wheelbase? Was it offered for all model years of the E38? It's hard to find information on these. I wish they were offered here in the US.
VANOS is nothing like V-TEC. VANOS is variable valve timing, something V-TEC (and just about all cars now) have. V-TEC changes valve lift in addition to timing.
paulanderson79 i-VTEC , but Alfa and BMW were first
@@thetruth7633 It's not the same thing as V-TEC. Variable valve timing arrangements have been in production cars for a long time now. BMW started off with a single VANOS system which was a binary mode arrangement. Later systems operate continuously variable arrangements for intake and exhaust cams.
the geabox is 5 speed auto. E38 only had 6 speed in manual guise.
Claucius Fello Not only!!on e38 had 5 speed manual box too
Next time lower the music volume compared with your speaking volume.. You have a pretty strong British accent if you ask me.
Further a good review 👍🏻 will buy a E38 735i next week with only 200.000 km on it
There ir a rarer 7 series that had the engine on the back... Chris Harris reviewed it on an auction
where is this car now anyone , id buy this .yes the best shape BMW Ever made nothing will beat this ,Iown 2 my summer and my winter one both are mint in manchester , but the peppermint green one is well known .
It’s a shame it doesn’t have it original wheels!
Yes, sad. One of the 1st things people get rid of is the wheels and lights.
Very iconic and grandiose . Newer models are craps.
The 750i, shirt wheelbase car was only available in Europe. Much better handling than the il. Probably 200 kg lighter a well.
Euro LWB E38's were equipped with sunroofs and double glazing as standard. Weight difference with an equally equipped SWB E38 may come down to as little as 50kg's.
Hans van Velzen, Hans, the reason that I would look for an import 750i is the handling of the SWB chassis. When I had my 11990
@@arttafil6792 Handling will never be any E38's strongest point, because of sheer size and mass. I had an E39 530i before the E38L and it made the Seven feel like quite a boat at first. A big one. But when compared to the actual competition it proves a very well handling and capable car. Even in LWB shape. Man, the fun I had with the beast on those tight and twisty backroads in Tuscany! An added benefit of the LWB is even more smoothness in the ride and in my opinion, better looks. And for those licensed to kill; easier access to the rear seats through the backdoor windows....
I pushed the wrong key. Let me continue. When I had my 1990. E34 535i M30 SOHC senior six with 5-speed I rebuilt my suspension using Ee38 750i or even iL components. Basically the E34 chassis is a baby E38 AND ALL the suspension and drivetrain components interchange. The main difference is that the E38 components are heavier. Even the differentials interchange. I put a Euro 750i unit in my 5 series with 3..64:1 limited slip in the 5. I already had had the dogleg 5-speed with direct drive 5th. That turned my E34 into a beast!
Hans van Velzen , Hans,, here’s a thought. Given that the E34’s and E38’s have near complete parts interchangibility so to maximize handling install M5 touring springs and 750i or iL thrust rods and bushings. The touring sway bars are massive. Let me know your thoughts on this...
I have one 😊
Me too 🙂

What the hell was that rattling in the car when you were driving it? Rattles in my car drive me nuts. All German, hell all cars have become rattle traps. Early 80s and before BMWs and Mercs had almost no plastic and even with hundreds of thousands of miles did not rattle.

wow, I did not know 750 came in an

Personally, id always take a shorty over an LWB

No. England
@@OLLIEHEELANDTOE Woah okay
Dude get a microphone attached to your shirt. So many times at critical moments I could not hear what you meant to say.
10 speed smg
Beautiful car and terrible review. It has half as much plastic as modern car in the cockpit and all the leather is real one instead of the fake leather of the new cars, do some research boy. Learn a thing or two about classic BMW prior recording “test drives” about them. Waste of time. Thumb down.
1998 - 2020, very long time. Cars are supposed to last 12 years only.
Gustavo Herrera bullshit
Guys That Drive
according to consumer report, 8 years or 150k is average useful life of a car.
I say 12 because I remember reading some car warranty pamphlets, and seat belts are warranted for life of vehicle, OR 12 years.
20 years for an appliance that is typically stored outside, has thousands of moving parts, typically neglected like any other appliance, is plenty long time.
Gustavo Herrera If a car is looked after it should last easily double if not triple that amount of time. A 750i should be up there lasting decades on decades given the value new. This car should be one of the classics around 50 years after it was new
Guys That Drive
Yeah. I agree with you. I’m not saying a car shouldn’t or won’t. I’m referring to the guy in the video. He’s talking about the car’s oldness and gripping about quality while neglecting how old it actually is.
I love cars man.
But let’s be real and not get hung up on cars having to last forever. Car looks amazing still.
My 01 E38 is near perfect condition for 20 years old, all depends on how you take care of them. In 20 more years I’ll update you.
Looks bouncy
lee nevin that’s probs our crap roads in the north of England
Music's too loud mate.
My E38 had better become worth a lot of money in five to ten years with what I've thrown at it to keep it perfect. -ish.
I hear you, I have a 1995 740il with 98k miles, and I love it. I think they will grow in value in six years my will be a. Classic
@ants staffs No it goes great as an every day driver, but maintenance is never below a grand a year, mostly suspension and steering parts. At 22 years old any circuit, bulb or motor can fail.
@@SocksWithSandals with servicing and repairs what do you reckon it costs you a year?

As unreliable as other BMW products?
wholeNwon Not unreliable at all. The only problem is almost no one does decent maintanaince on it, so if you buy one you have to replace most wearing parts. But if well kept won’t leave on the side of the road.
@@epicon6 The friend I was thinking about in Silicon Valley has almost infinite money and his cars have no-expense-spared maintenance. So tired of random strandings that his wife won't even get into his 12 cylinder 7 series. I have another friend in Fla. who has a very old 3 series and has had a very good experience with it over many years.
wholeNwon Which generation V12 7? E38? E68? F04? G12?
@@epicon6 Sorry. I don't know. Only see them around the xmas holidays and then ask them about their cars. I gave up German cars 20 years ago.

728i is the Best of lot for Real World driving...the rest can't Sustain speed on a long journey😂MPG problem 😥
Unless you want to get out of your own way. It has no power at all
728i has adequate power...and a Decent top speed of 140mph...
@8rick1ane Underpowered when you compare it to it's other siblings...but it's still capable of cruising at 130mph all night..try doing that in a 740 or 750.. and see how quickly your tank drops from Full to Half..😆.rmbr it's not a racing car..it's all about cruising lol
It ain't rare unless it's armored.
