The cover depicts an episode from the Ice March, a tragic but heroic withdrawal performed by the Volunteer Army under Kornilov/Denikin in Kuban region in winter 1918. But the vibe indeed resembles that of the WRVA, the Avalofftruppen and Baltic Germans. The latter's fight is too unknown and it is barely possible to find any painting of them

This song is beautifully haunting in so many ways, and I say that as someone with sympathies towards the reds.
Respect to the brave men and heroes from both sides of the bloodshed.
I like This Version, Not Only Because it shows the pain and suffering of the Captured Russian army. But It Seems That That The Soldiers Wife's Are Singing. Its Different from Dr Ludwig's Version Well done :3

The song is written about them. The West Russian Volunteer Army was a part of the White movement. It was composed of Germans, Russians, Estonians, Lithuanians etc. as far as i know. It was supported by the Germans as well.

Can someone explain the background-story of this song? I am German and love this song but don't know the historical background.
The song is about the West Russians Volunteer Army, which fought against the Soviets alongside the Freikorps in the Baltic States in the years immediately following the end of the great war

@@numbers-stations good correction, you are right since it was more of a three way war rather than a communists vs others. The WRVA was supposedly with the white movement but more was just there to serve german interests which also involved fighting the national armies
